I agreed to everything he asked. I was curious to know what his opinion was on the situation and the more I understood about the illness inside of me, the better. The nurse who took my blood flirted with me. I left feeling a little hopeful. This doctor was going to try and get me some answers and I tried not to be too excited. I was still going to live like I was running out of time and until I was given a different opinion, I wouldn’t live up to false hope.

Introduction

Through books we come into contact with everything important that has happened in the past, analyzing also current events and putting our thoughts together to predict the future. The book is a window to the world, acquiring valuable knowledge and sparking our vivid imagination. It is a means of entertainment and is generally seen as a best friend, or as a slave that carries together all valuable information for us. The book is a friend who stays together without demands, a friend you call upon at every moment and abandon when you want.

It accompanies us in the hours of boredom and loneliness, while at the same time it entertains us. In general, a book does not ask anything from us, while it waits patiently on a dusty shelf to give us its information, to get us out of dead ends and to travel us to magical worlds.

This may be the travel mission of our books. Abstract narration, weird or unconscious thoughts difficult to be understood, but always genuine and full of life experiences, these are stories of life that can’t be overlooked easily.

This may be the start of something amazing.

Chapter One

My apartment was closer, and because Mona was still lightheaded from blood loss, I suggested we go there so she could rest. Micah helped her into the guest room. I could tell he was eager to play doctor with her. Nicola didn’t look so great either. If Mona hadn’t been bleeding so badly, I would have been more concerned for her sister when she’d passed out.

Nicola went to the kitchen and she took a bottle of juice out of the cupboard and poured herself a glass. I could see her hands were shaking as she poured it then she guzzled the juice. I got up from the couch and stood next to her.

“I freaked you out today, didn’t I?” I asked.

She poured some more and chugged it before answering.

“No. I already know about you and your magic hands.” She chuckled nervously. “I . . . I just really hate blood. It’s embarrassing that I passed out, but the sight of it made me sick.”

Nicola started shaking even more and I took the glass from her.

“How are you so calm?” she asked. “You’re the one who just performed this miraculous act and I’m the one having a nervous breakdown.”

“Oh, you’re not having a nervous breakdown. I invented nervous breakdowns. Hello, I went into a coma after finding out I was adopted, remember?”

She fought back a smile then set her glass in the sink. She wasn’t shaking as much, which meant she was calming down. I put the juice back in the fridge then we went into the living room.

“Seriously, Lucas. How did you do that?”

“I’ve always been able to. Ever since I was little. I just didn’t tell anyone but your sister and Mike. They were afraid they’d put me in a lab or something.”

Nicola continued staring at me. “It’s so . . . miraculous. This is crazy, Lucas. People just don’t have those abilities. I mean, I saw it happen and I still don’t believe my eyes.”

I lightly smiled. “I think of it as nature’s balance. I’ve been sick all my life, so naturally I make other people better.”

She looked in my eyes. “I wouldn’t have told anyone. I know what it’s like to keep a secret. But I understand why you never said anything.”

I moved closer to her. “What if I told you . . . I brought Robin back.”

Nicola’s eyes grew wide. “You mean you can raise the dead? No way.” She chuckled. “Lucas, you’re shitting me right now.”

“I’m not. Believe me, I didn’t know I could do it either. It wasn’t on purpose.” I sighed. “But anyway, I don’t plan on doing it again. It’s a dangerous gift and playing around with people’s lives like that is wrong.”

“This is too much.” She rubbed her face. “But I can’t imagine what it’s like for you.”

“I’m taking everything one day at a time. So. You still want to keep going out with me? Cause I had a fun time at the beach before it went to hell.”

Nicola shrugged. “I’ll think about it. I’m still weighing the pros and cons. One pro is I’ll never need to buy Band-Aids again, right?”

I reached over and tickled her side, causing her to shriek. I’d forgotten that she was so ticklish and decided to take advantage of that. She must have seen the mischievous look on my face because she began to scoot away

“No! Don’t even think about it!”

I pinned her to the couch and continued tickling her until she was laughing uncontrollably, tears streaming down her eyes. We hadn’t done this since we were little and it was probably a good thing I was weak or she wouldn’t have a chance to escape.

“Lucas Wright! You better stop or I’m going to slap you!” she threatened.

“Go ahead! I’m used to it by now.”

We laughed as I stopped tickling her then we grew quiet and locked eyes. I felt my heart beat a little faster, and I was overwhelmed with the desire to kiss her. I became very aware that I was lying on top of Nicola and she was only wearing her swimsuit and wrap.

I studied the curve of her mouth and imaged what it would feel like against mine. I was so close to her and it wouldn’t take much to close in the few inches of space between us. But she’d freaked out the last time and I didn’t want to make the same mistake twice.

To my surprise, she moved first. She got closer, and her lips were nearly on mine when we were interrupted by a knock at the door. I quickly moved away then we both got up from the couch. I couldn’t believe that she’d almost kissed me. My mind was reeling the entire time I went to see who’d stopped by.

I opened the door and studied the visitor. He was wearing a UPS jumpsuit. He was about an inch shorter than me at most and had short black hair. What I found most odd was his eye patch.

For a while, he just stared at me like he was waiting for something. I thought about speaking first, but for some reason I didn’t. It got awkward after ten seconds, and I was glad that he spoke first.

“Good afternoon,” the man said. “I’m here to deliver a package.”

Nicola joined me in the entryway and gave him a seductive smile.

“You can deliver your package here anytime,” she said.

“What she meant to ask is who it’s for,” I said, growing more embarrassed by the second.

The man chuckled then handed me a notepad. “It’s for . . .” he quickly glanced at the paper. “Lucas Wright. Would you mind signing for it?”

Nicola walked away and I scribbled my name on the device.

“Where is this package?” I could barely get the word out. Nicola forever ruined it for me.

“The parking lot. I would have brought it to the door, but I didn’t want to block it.”

“Oh, so you have a big package?” Nicola shouted from the kitchen. “Even better!”

“Thank you, sir,” I said, now officially mortified.

The man chuckled before walking away, and he disappeared around the side of the complex. I didn’t move at first because the whole encounter was vaguely familiar. What was weirder was that I didn’t hear a truck start and usually UPS people drove big trucks.

I closed the door then went back into the living room. Nicola was getting a drink of water and Mona had come back from the bedroom. She’d struck up a conversation with Micah on the couch. I walked past them and went to talk to Nicola.

“What was that about?” I asked in a hushed tone.

“What was what about?”

I folded my arms. “You were flirting with the delivery guy. Was that an attempt to make me jealous?”
