Unlock the more straightforward side of Suddenly Last Summer with this concise and insightful summary and analysis!

This engaging summary presents an analysis of Suddenly Last Summer by Tennessee Williams. At the outset of this one-act play, Mrs. Venable is talking to the psychiatrist Dr. Sugar. She laments the death of her beloved son Sebastian and hits out at his cousin Catherine, whom she blames for his death and accuses of spreading vicious rumours about him. Indeed, Catherine’s claims about Sebastian have landed her in an asylum, and Mrs. Venable even attempts to convince the psychiatrist to perform a lobotomy on her. However, when Dr. Sugar talks to Catherine, the sinister truth about the events of the previous summer gradually emerges… Williams’s other works include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie, and he is widely considered to be one of the greatest American playwrights of all time.

Born in Columbus, Mississippi in 1914.Died in New York in 1983.Notable works:Battle of Angels (1940), playThe Glass Menagerie (1944), playA Streetcar Named Desire (1947), play

Thomas Lanier Williams, better known by his penname Tennessee Williams, was an American playwright. He held a BA in English from the University of Iowa (1938). Williams had one sister, Rose, who was mentally ill. He grew up in the South in a deeply Puritan environment. Williams was eager to escape this environment and moved to New Orleans in 1938, prompted by his literary ambitions. He had started publishing poetry at an early age and had his first success with the play Battle of Angels. He became famous overnight for his play The Glass Menagerie in 1944; however, he felt pressured by his fame, which led to a lifelong depression. Williams battled this with drugs, alcohol and daily writing. He lived with his partner Frank Merlo until Merlo’s death in 1963, which deeply affected Williams. His writing was deeply influenced by his homosexuality and the mental condition of his sister. Another influence on his writing was the poetry of Hart Crane (American poet, 1899-1932). Williams won the Gold Medal for Drama from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1969.

Suddenly Last Summer is sometimes described as belonging to a trilogy of plays, the other two being Orpheus Descending and Sweet Bird of Youth (Clum, 1997: 128). According to Clum, these plays all exemplify religious parables in that their male hero is sacrificed. Suddenly Last Summer is described as a “grotesque parody of the Eucharist” (ibid.). The martyrdom in the three plays, Clum explains, is due to the failure of the main characters to follow the prescribed rules in a patriarchal society (ibid.) Suddenly Last Summer
