Summary of Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson

Elon Musk, born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa, is a well-known entrepreneur and business magnate known for founding, co-founding, or leading several high-profile technology companies.
Musk emigrated to the United States from South Africa in the mid-'90s and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned degrees in both economics and physics. In 1995, he began his PhD at Stanford University but decided to pursue a business career in the field of internet, renewable energy, and outer space.
He initially entered the tech world through ventures like Zip2 Corporation, which he co-founded with his brother Kimbal. Zip2 was a city guide software for newspapers, and it was eventually sold to Compaq for nearly $300 million in 1999. Musk continued his entrepreneurial journey by co-founding X.com, an online payment company. X.com later became PayPal after a merger and was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.
However, Musk is perhaps best known for his work with SpaceX and Tesla Motors. In 2002, he founded Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, with the goal of reducing space transportation costs to enable the colonization of Mars. SpaceX has launched numerous satellites, resupplied the International Space Station (ISS), and is working on the Starship spacecraft for missions to Mars.
Musk joined Tesla Motors, Inc. (now Tesla, Inc.) in 2004, a year after its founding, and is the CEO and product architect of the company. Under his leadership, Tesla has become a leader in electric vehicles with the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y, along with the Powerwall and Powerpack batteries for energy storage.

PART I

Elon Musk's proclivity for taking risks can be traced back to his maternal grandfather, Joshua Haldeman. Joshua was an audacious adventurer who spent his formative years on a Canadian farm. He initially pursued studies in chiropractic techniques in Iowa but eventually returned to his hometown near Moose Jaw. There, he bartered chiropractic services for food and shelter. The Great Depression dealt Joshua a harsh blow, leading to the loss of his farm. Subsequently, he tried his hand at various occupations, including being a cowboy, rodeo performer, and construction worker. Joshua held strong populist beliefs and became associated with the Social Credit Party, a conservative movement tinged with anti-Semitic tendencies. He also joined Technocracy, an organization advocating for governance by technocrats.

Joshua's thirst for adventure led him to meet Winnifred Fletcher, whom he later married. Together, they had four children, including twin daughters named Maye and Kaye. In a spontaneous act, Joshua purchased an airplane despite lacking the knowledge of how to fly it. The family earned the moniker "The Flying Haldemans" as they embarked on numerous daring escapades.

In 1950, motivated by his conservative convictions and disillusionment with Canadian governance, Joshua relocated his family to South Africa, settling near Pretoria. He also embarked on a quest to discover a legendary lost city in the Kalahari Desert. Tragically, Joshua's adventurous life came to a premature end when he lost his life while instructing someone in flying. This spirit of risk-taking and adventure was passed down to his daughter Maye, who later became Elon Musk's mother.

Maye displayed exceptional aptitude in science and mathematics while simultaneously pursuing a modeling career. It was during this time that she crossed paths with Errol Musk, a charismatic and adventurous neighbor. Errol's mother, Cora, possessed a strong personality and had relocated from England to South Africa after World War II. Errol, on the other hand, was an engineer with political involvement and a passion for aviation. He even dabbled in a risky emerald business.
