Overview

It Ends with Us was published in 2016 by Colleen Hoover follows Lily Bloom as she navigates a complex love life intertwined with her past experiences of abuse. The story begins with Lily, a recent college graduate in Boston, meeting Ryle Kincaid, a surgeon who only seeks a casual relationship, which clashes with Lily's desire for something more serious. Despite this, they rekindle their connection when Lily hires Ryle’s sister, Allysa, for her flower shop.

Lily is haunted by her past, particularly her father's abusive behavior towards her mother, which she revisits through old journals. These journals recount her past relationship with Atlas Corrigan, a homeless boy who offered her support during her family's turmoil. Lily's unresolved feelings for Atlas resurface when she encounters him again, complicating her relationship with Ryle.

As Lily and Ryle’s relationship deepens, Ryle’s abusive tendencies emerge, mirroring Lily's father's behavior. After a violent outburst, Lily is torn between staying with Ryle and seeking refuge with Atlas, who still has feelings for her. Lily’s situation worsens when Ryle's aggression escalates, leading her to leave him after discovering she's pregnant.

Lily ultimately decides to leave Ryle to protect her child from growing up in an abusive environment. With support from her mother and Allysa, Lily prepares for motherhood and reconsiders a future with Atlas, who is open to rekindling their past relationship when the time is right.

Chapter 1

Lily Bloom, a 23-year-old college graduate, is in Boston after her father’s funeral in her hometown of Plethora, Maine. She stands alone on the rooftop of a tall building, trying to clear her mind. A young man arrives and angrily throws a chair, reminding Lily of her father's outbursts. When he notices her, he introduces himself as Ryle Kincaid, a neurosurgery student. Ryle is there because his sister owns a floor in the building.

Lily tells Ryle that she’s not a resident; she just enjoys the rooftop because it reminds her of her gardening hobby. She plans to open a flower shop soon. Ryle shares that he recently witnessed a tragic accident where a young boy was accidentally shot by his 6-year-old brother. Lily reveals her father was abusive, and she had to say nothing good about him in her eulogy. Ryle responds that “there is no such thing as bad people. We’re all just people who sometimes do bad things.”

Lily also talks about her first romantic experience with a homeless boy. Throughout their chat, it’s clear Lily is attracted to Ryle. He admits he’s interested in a casual fling, but Lily wants more than that. As Ryle tries to flirt, he gets called to work, takes a picture of Lily, and leaves.
