Last year, before Epiphany day, my grandma asked me and my cousins to write a letter to the Three Wise Men asking for presents, which she then placed at the Nativity scene. I felt I was too old for that, but my youngest cousins were happy to play along with sweet grandma’s innocent tradition. She just wanted to see us smile. On 5th January, grandma Sol asked us for our shoes so that Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar could leave the presents. I laughed at the idea. But nevertheless I put a pair of old football boots in a box. They were worn out and the laces were missing - my mum had lost them one laundry day. With a mischievous grin, I took the box to my grandma’s house.
I was in primary school and ever since I was a little boy, I had wanted to be a football player. I always did my best to improve, but I had never scored a goal. I felt frustrated and sad. The other players of the team wanted me to stay on the bench and the coach overlooked me. He could see in my eyes that I yearned to play, but bringing me on to the pitch would have most likely meant losing. Samuel, my best friend and the top scorer, always said reassuringly: ‘Valentino, don’t worry. You’ll play next Sunday’. I knew he said that to comfort me, but it helped me gain confidence.
