Born in Edinburgh (Scotland) in 1859.Died in Crowborough in 1930.Notable works:The Adventure of the Speckled Band (1892), short storyThe Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892), short story collectionThe Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), novel

Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859, and originally pursued a career as a doctor. He did not establish himself as a writer until 1885, when he used his first short story, A Study in Scarlet, to introduce his famous protagonist: the private detective Sherlock Holmes. He was not met with immediate success, and it was only in 1890 that the writer was able to close his medical practice and devote himself exclusively to writing. He then went on to publish four novels, including The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Lost World, and 56 short stories, including the famous Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Wanting to devote himself to science fiction, but held back by his hero’s success, Conan Doyle killed him off in The Final Problem. However, after immense pressure from his readers, he revived him ten years later in The Return of Sherlock Holmes, published in 1905.

Sir Conan Doyle died in England in 1930.
