Chapter 1

My husband and I had been married 10 years. We were like any other couple we vacationed once a year. Had good jobs he works as a lawyer and I sell real estate. Val came from a large hard working family. She hardly saw her father, he was always working to support eight children. Between 2 jobs he was hardly home at all. It put a real strain on her parents' marriage. She loved her father , and she wished could have spent more time with him. Before his passing from lung cancer. She worried about Rick sometimes. His job, was demanding and stressful, and he smoked almost two pack's a day. She wanted Rick to stop smoking, but, she knew he never would Not as long as he was chained to that Job. Rick, was the best in the field of criminal law. He had worked so hard to get through school, and she worked as a waitress at a local family restaurant. So she could surprise him at Christmas with a set of law books. He couldn't afford that Christmas, was magical. The best ever. Rick bought her an engagement ring, instead of used law books he desperately needed he was so good to her. Rick had gotten where he was taking a lot more trips for his side business ventures. I was afraid he had started seeing someone. I didn't want my marriage to end was he bored with me? Had our romance burned out? Was he cheating? I didn't know what to do. I had my usual Friday night bridge game with a few of my girl friends from school. One night as we were playing cards Brandy my Best friend from high school noticed I seemed distracted. Brandy and Val had been best friends since Highschool. Brandy made starting a new school so much easier. Val was always a bit of a wallflower braces, pigtails, black rimmed glasses.
