Paul Auster

American writer

Born in Newark, New York in 1947Notable works: Moon Palace (1989), novelLeviathan (1992), novelThe Brooklyn Follies (2005), novel

Born in Newark on the 3rd of February 1947, Paul Auster has long been considered as France’s favourite American writer. After finishing his arts degree at Columbia University, he began his literary career in New York as a translator, producing English versions of French-language texts by authors such as Stéphane Mallarmé (French poet, 1842-1989), Georges Simenon (Belgian writer, 1903-1989) and Jean-Paul Sartre (French philosopher and writer, 1905-1980). Auster is very familiar with France, having spent long periods of time there, first in 1967 and then from 1971 to 1974.

He first began writing at the age of 13. From 1967-1979 he wrote silent films, poetry and plays, but his place on the American literary landscape was only truly cemented in 1987 when his New York Trilogy was published, after having been turned down by multiple publishing houses. From then onwards, he went from strength to strength, publishing new and successful texts such as Moon Palace (1989), Leviathan (1992), Mr. Vertigo (1994) and The Book of Illusions (2002). These novels explore Auster’s classic themes of identity, solitude, death and New York City.

The Brooklyn Follies

A mosaic of New-York existence

Genre: NovelReference edition: Auster, P. (2006) The Brooklyn Follies. New York: Picador.First edition: 2005Themes: Love, family, New York, death, friendship, politics, divorce

Among the apparently banal characters and collection of ordinary stories presented in The Brooklyn Follies is a truly political message, masked by its apparent everyday quality. The novel does in fact make several references to the election of George W. Bush (American politician born in 1946), and is set in a pre-9/11 New York.
