André Gide

French writer

Born in Paris in 1869.Died in Paris in 1951.Notable works:The Fruits of the Earth (1897), prose-poemThe Vatican Cellars (1914), satirical playThe Counterfeiters (1925), novel

André Gide (1869-1951) was a French writer from a middle-class, Protestant family. He is considered one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947. His work often addresses homosexuality from an accepting perspective, reflecting the author’s own self-acceptance as a gay man and his stated desire to free himself from the social and religious constraints surrounding the issue.

Gide made his literary debut in 1890 with the publication of The Notebooks of André Walter, although his most significant literary works were those he wrote in the 1920s. His literary career went from strength to strength, and his writing was highly political: he condemned colonialism and Soviet totalitarianism, as well as opposing fascism. Gide is also considered a forerunner of the writers of the Nouveau Roman (a French literary style which was popular in the 1950s) due to the complexity of his narratives, as seen in The Counterfeiters (1925), among other works. The layered nature of his work stems from the balance between its strong moral foundations, as influenced by his upbringing, and its quest for freedom.

The Counterfeiters

A highly intricate novel

Genre: novelReference edition: Gide, A. (1973) The Counterfeiters. Trans. Bussy, D. Vintage: New York.1st edition: 1925Themes: money, friendship, love, family, scorn, suicide

The Counterfeiters was first published in French in 1925, and today it is considered one of the most important literary works of the 20th century. The stirrings of new literary movements such as the Nouveau Roman are already in evidence in this novel, which was also named as one of the best novels written in French during the first half of the 20th century. The defining features of The Counterfeiters are its free writing style and its numerous characters, both of which constitute a deviation from traditional, linear literary styles.

The main narrative thread focuses on the bonds of friendship or love between the three main characters (Bernard, Olivier and Edouard), supplemented by various subplots centred on other characters such as Olivier’s two brothers (one of whom goes mad, while the other gets caught up in crime) and Boris, a sensitive boy who is driven to suicide by his abandonment issues.
