PSEUDONYM OF ENGLISH AUTHOR J.K. ROWLING
Born in Gloucestershire in 1965.Notable works:The Silkworm (2014), crime novelCareer of Evil (2015), crime novelLethal White (2018), crime novelRobert Galbraith is the pseudonym of J.K. Rowling, who is most famous for her Harry Potter fantasy book series. She was born in Gloucestershire in 1965 and wrote stories as a child before studying French and Classics at Exeter University. Her earlier career took her to Portugal teaching English as a foreign language. After returning to the UK and struggling to make ends meet for herself and her daughter, she began writing what would become the Harry Potter series in cafés. By the turn of the century she was a hugely successful children’s author.
Rowling decided to publish The Cuckoo’s Calling and the subsequent three books in the Strike series under a pseudonym so that the publication of her crime novels would be without the baggage of her fame. While sales of The Cuckoo’s Calling predictably skyrocketed when her name was attached to it, it had actually performed well both in sales and in reviews under the name Robert Galbraith. Before Rowling’s authorship was revealed, Robert Galbraith was described as an ex-Royal Military Police investigator, much like Cormoran Strike, the protagonist of the novels. Rowling has continued to publish subsequent novels in the Strike series under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, although the inside jackets of the books do acknowledge Rowling’s authorship.
A CRIME NOVEL
Genre: crime novelReference edition: Galbraith, R. (2013) The Cuckoo’s Calling. London: Little, Brown.1stedition: 2013Themes: murder, wealth, fame, class, family breakdownThe Cuckoo’s Calling was released without fanfare to positive reviews for a debut author. The true author was revealed by The Times in July 2013 following an investigation into the novel and a leak from a law firm which had worked with Rowling. The law firm apologised for the leak and made a donation to the Soldiers’ Charity after Rowling brought legal action against them. The novel’s popularity soared when Rowling was revealed as the true author and it received more critical attention, resulting for the most part in positive reviews.
The novel is an example of ‘whodunnit’ crime fiction, in which Cormoran Strike, an ex-army private detective, tries to figure out if Lula Landry committed suicide, as was concluded by the police, or if she was in fact murdered. He is aided in his investigation by the ambitious temp Robin Ellacott, who is thrilled to be working alongside a private investigator. The novel follows Strike and Robin as they interview numerous characters connected with the case and slowly inch closer to the truth.
