He graduated in Art and Literature at Amherst College and The Philipps Exeter Academy (New Hampshire). In 1997, he tried his hand at writing and published his first novel, Digital Fortress (1998), which was a testimony to his interest in codes and conspiracies, which would become recurrent themes throughout his works. But it was not until The Da Vinci Code (2003), second volume in his trilogy (with Angels & Demons in 2000 and The Lost Symbol in 2009) dedicated to Robert Langdon, a professor of religious symbolism, that he achieved true success and became recognized as a bestselling author throughout the world.
Published in 2003, The Da Vinci Code is Dan Brown’s fourth novel. In this esoteric thriller, the author leads us in a real chase through France and England, in search of the mysterious Grail and those who have done everything to keep it safe or destroy it. Scattering legends and historical facts throughout his work, Dan Brown weaves a story whose outcome could change the world. A true bestseller, several tens of millions of copies of the book have been sold in the world and the book was quickly adapted for the cinema (2006).
Staying in Paris because of a lecture, Robert Langdon, a professor of religious symbolism at the University of Harvard, is woken up by the police: they need him to investigate the murder of Jacques Saunière, the curator of the Louvre Museum. The latter has been savagely attacked and tormented, before being killed by an albino called Silas in the big gallery of the Louvre. His body has been found in the middle of a Pentagram (a five-pointed star with magical meaning) and symbols. The disposition of the body is reminiscent of The Vitruvian Man, an anatomical drawing by Leonardo da Vinci (Italian artist and scientist, 1542-1519).
After having committed this murder, the monk Silas managed to enter the Saint Sulpice Church in the middle of the night, thanks to his contacts with the Opus Dei (catholic institution founded in 1928). There, he has to find a mysterious cornerstone for the “Master”.
