Chapter 1: Introduction

Emily Parker sat alone in her office, the dim light of the chandelier gently casting upon the case file on her desk. Surrounded by the gray walls of her office on the 30th floor of a sparkling building in the heart of New York, she meticulously examined every page.

The media coverage of Sophia Blackwood's murder had been relentless, and every newspaper, every broadcast, had portrayed the accused, Nathan Falco, as a heartless monster. Emily knew that defending Nathan would be an enormous challenge, given the strongly adverse public opinion.

Her pen moved quickly along the edges of the pages as Emily jotted down observations and questions. She had long ago learned that the smallest details could reveal the greatest secrets. As she read through the prosecution's documents, some details began to seem inconsistent.

An hour later, her suspicion of a possible setup against Nathan had intensified. Her passion for justice was well known in the law firm; it was this force that drove her to fight for those who have no voice. However, this case was different: there was something personal that she couldn't quite define.

Deciding to go all the way, Emily agreed to take on Nathan's defense. As soon as she had signed the necessary documents, she took her coat and left the office in the direction of the apartment where the tragic murder had taken place. It was essential that Nathan see for himself what had really happened.

When she arrived at the luxurious apartment, Emily was greeted by a police officer who opened the door for her. The interior was spectacular, with large windows offering a panoramic view of Manhattan, but the atmosphere was tainted by tragedy. As she walked through the room, her trained eyes noticed details that confirmed her first impressions of the crime scene. There was a bloodstain that did not match the description given by the authorities, as well as dubious footprints and steps leading away from the central area.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of her cell phone ringing. She answered quickly: it was her legal assistant informing her that she would soon be meeting the Blackwood family.

Mentally preparing herself for the meeting, Emily left the apartment and went to the Blackwood residence. The next day, at the entrance of the large and imposing villa, she was greeted by Richard Blackwood. The man, tall and imposing in a tailored dark gray suit, gave her a smile that did not reach his cold gray eyes.

"A pleasure, Mrs. Parker. I imagine you're here to ask about my poor daughter," Richard said in a controlled voice, but with a tone that suggested the opposite.

"Yes, Mr. Blackwood. It is essential that I understand all aspects of Sophia's life and the people close to her in order to adequately defend Nathan," Emily replied firmly, trying not to show any emotion.

Richard led her through the house, openly disapproving of his son-in-law. Sophia was a golden girl, and that boy... I don't know what you can find to clear him. Everyone knows the truth, even if not everyone accepts it."

Emily nodded politely, but inwardly she was on high alert. Every word from Richard seemed calculated, every gesture of concern. She knew that behind that facade of sadness, there could be much more. Until she had gathered sufficient evidence and testimony, every person would remain a possible piece of the puzzle in what was proving to be a much more complex intrigue than she had imagined.

Back in the office after her meeting with Richard Blackwood, Emily sat behind her desk, her mind still full of that man's words and the cold rooms of the villa that seemed to hide secrets beneath every superficial luxury. She took out of her bag the photographs of the crime scene, those horrible images that showed Sophia's lifeless body, cruelly disfigured by twenty-three stab wounds.

She looked at the photos, every bloody detail screamed of the violence inflicted on that poor woman. Emily felt a lump in her throat. Those images spoke of an attack as furious as it was personal. But who could want to hurt Sophia so much? And why would Nathan be involved? Despite the external pressure and fear, in her heart, Emily could not believe that he was the culprit.

A hot tear ran down her cheek as she looked at Sophia's face in the photographs: so young, so full of life, and now reduced to a cold murder case. She closed her eyes, breathing deeply to maintain her calm, but the images of the crime returned violently to her mind, bringing back the clear memory of the pain and terror that those photos evoked.

Emily took a handkerchief and dried her eyes. She had to remain strong and focused. For Sophia, for justice, for the truth. She promised herself that she would do everything in her power to close the case, not only for Nathan, but also and above all to give a name and a story to those images, to restore dignity to that young life interrupted too soon.

§§§

The young lawyer stood up, put the photos back in the folder and began to write a list of people to question, of witnesses to examine, of leads to follow. Every move was determined, every decision was the result of the burning desire to shed light on the dark truth. The sadness she had felt a moment before had now turned into a decisive driving force; for Emily, every case brought with it the weight of emotion, but also the impulse to act, to change things, to make a difference.

It was time to hear Nathan.

The next day she would meet Nathan Falco in the death row.

Chapter 2: Meeting the Accused

Emily Parker walked down the prison corridor, her heels echoing monotonously on the linoleum floor. The interrogation room was little more than a cold cube, with bare walls that only highlighted the single piece of furniture: a square table with two chairs. The room was dimly lit by an old hanging lamp that generated more shadows than light.

"Mr. Falco, I am Emily Parker, your lawyer," she said, extending her hand when the man stood up to greet her.

"Thank you for coming, Miss Parker," Nathan replied with a disarming smile.

As she sat down, Emily observed Nathan. He was tall and handsome, with a clean and precise beauty that was immediately noticeable. However, beyond this smooth surface, there was an aura of mystery that surrounded him, complicated by the murky circumstances of his trial.

"Mr. Falco, I understand that the current situation is extremely stressful," Emily began, trying to establish serious eye contact. "I am here to help you, but I need you to be completely honest with me."

Nathan nodded, meeting her eyes. "I understand and appreciate your help. I am innocent, Miss Parker, and I am ready to do everything I can to prove it."

Emily opened her briefcase and took out some photos and documents. "I have started to analyze the elements of the case, and there are some inconsistencies that I cannot ignore. I would like to hear your version of the facts the night your wife was found dead."

Nathan swallowed hard, and his face became more serious. "I can only say that that night I was at a work meeting, a dinner with a potential partner. When I came back, I found Sophia... like that. I have no idea who could have hurt her in that way. I loved my wife."

Emily took notes while he spoke, her face remained impassive, focused. "The preliminary investigation states that there were no signs of forced entry. How do you explain that the killer was able to enter the house?"

"We always left a window slightly open in the kitchen. Sophia liked the fresh air," Nathan explained simply.

"Tell me about your wife, about your relationship. Every detail can be crucial," Emily asked, scrutinizing him carefully to catch any nuance in his expression or tone of voice.

"Sophia was wonderful, brilliant, loving," Nathan began, his voice trembling a little. "We were happy, despite what people now seem to speculate. We had our problems, like everyone, but love was always present."

"Reading the reports, I noticed some frequent calls on your cell phone from an unidentified number in the days preceding the murder. Can you tell me what they were about?"

Nathan hesitated, then replied: "They were work calls, insignificant. I didn't think they were relevant."
