Very few things are known about Homer. Due to the lack of information, many experts have questioned his existence. Therefore, two perspectives can be found on the subject of Homer:
The first perspective concludes that Homer did exist. In that case, he is seen as an aoidos, i.e., a poet who told stories, who would have lived between the 8th and 7th centuries B.C. and would have been the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey; The second perspective believes that he did not exist and that behind the name ‘Homer’ hides a group of aoidos that would have composed the two works that are attributed to him.To this day, this argument has still not been resolved, as both sides present valid arguments.
The Iliad (whose name refers to Ilion, which is another name for the city of Troy) is a Greek epos divided into 24 songs narrating the war fought between the Greeks and the Trojans for ten years, in which Menelaus’ wife, Helen, was being held at stake, who had been captured by Paris, son of the Trojan king Priam.
This fight was an opportunity for the aoidos to describe the feats of the heroes on both sides in a battle where courage, valor and the divine supernatural were mixed. This resulted in a fresco, in which the scenes of evocative power offered to the reader ensured a posterity for performances, which is still visible today.
