Jean Cocteau was a French writer who was born in 1889 and died in 1963. Originally from a well-to-do, art-loving family, the suicide of his father and his failure at the baccalaureate spurred him to write, which gave rise to his first poems. Later, his different meetings with the important figures of his time (Picasso (Spanish painter, 1881-1973), Raymond Radiguet (French writer, 1903-1923), Apollinaire (French writer, 1880-1918)) led him to use his talents in other artistic domains, such as the cinema, the theatre and the world of art.
The polyvalence of his body of works and the controversies he provoked (he openly admits to being bisexual in Le Livre Blanc) ensured his fame. Jean Cocteau was also a member of the Académie Française and the Académie Royale de Langue et de Littérature Françaises de Belgique.
The Infernal Machine is a theater play written by Jean Cocteau in 1932. It is representative of the author’s “neoclassical” period, i.e. his desire to adapt Ancient Greek and Roman works to modern tastes.
Thus, the work is a modern adaptation of the Oedipal legend created by the Greek playwright Sophocles (5th century B.C.): in his text, Cocteau inserts references to the great intellectual trends of his time (namely in the field of psychoanalysis) and offers a personal interpretation of the character, while retaining the tragic character of the original work.
Performed from 1934, the play was initially a failure, despite the presence of the famous actor Louis Jouvet (French actor and stage director, 1887-1951).
