The son of a diplomat and a teacher, he left Afghanistan when he was very young, following his father in his various assignments. The family then lived in Paris, before requesting asylum in the United States, preferring not to return home while the country was under Russian control.
After obtaining his baccalaureate, Khaled Hosseini obtained a degree in biology and a doctorate in medicine. He has practiced as a doctor whilst writing novels ever since. His first book, The Kite Runner (2003), achieved considerable success, as did his second, A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007).
