Romain Gary (born Roman Kacew, and also known by the pseudonym Émile Ajar) was a French Jewish novelist. He was born in Lithuania in 1914 and moved to France at the age of 14. After graduating from university with a degree in law, he fought as part of the Free French Forces until the end of the Second World War (1939-1945), and was decorated with honours including the Companion of the Liberation and the Legion of Honour. After the war, he focused on writing novels, and also pursued a diplomatic career until 1960.

Gary is the author of numerous novels, and remains the only French writer to have received the Prix Goncourt on two separate occasions: once in 1956 for his novel The Roots of Heaven, published under the name Romain Gary, and once in 1975 for The Life Before Us, published under the pseudonym Émile Ajar. He committed suicide in 1980 at the age of 66, leaving behind a vast body of work which was heavily influenced by 20th-century French history and which explores a variety of themes, including courage, rebellion, love and femininity.

The Kites was published posthumously in 1980, and is considered to be Romain Gary’s last novel. Its narrator, Ludo, tells the story of the love of his life, which is inextricably linked to the history of the Second World War. The novel is set in Cléry, a small town in Normandy, between 1934 and 1945. Its depiction of the war is suffused with humanity and optimism, and its characters are able to overcome the horror that surrounds them by staying true to their passions and their dreams.

SUMMARY

A LOVE STORY

In spite of the differences between them and the circumstances that conspire to keep them apart, Ludovic, a young man from a humble background in Normandy, and Lila, a young Polish aristocrat, fall in love. Their story begins in the 1930s and spans the turbulent period of the Second World War, and their love stands the test of time, enduring repeated separations and the atrocities that accompany the war.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

In the 1930s, while Adolf Hitler (German Chancellor and dictator, 1889-1945) is preparing to seize power in Germany and danger is looming on the horizon in Europe, ten-year-old Ludo is living with his uncle Ambrose Fleury, an idealistic rural postman, in the village of Cléry in Normandy. Ambrose is an eccentric man (the village’s other inhabitants refer to him as “crazy old Fleury”) with a passion for making and flying kites. All the members of the Fleury family, whose ancestors played key roles in the French Revolution (1789-1799) and the Paris Commune (1789-1795), are idealists and possess an extraordinary historical memory.

One day, Ludo is walking in the woods when he comes across a strikingly beautiful young girl with blonde hair. He waits for her the next day in the hope of seeing her again, but she is not there. Indeed, it is not until four years later that the young girl, who is now 16, comes back to see him and tells him that her name is Lila Bronicki.
