By way of definition, a covenant is a legal contract into which one enters and by which his course of action is bound. This is usually between two parties to become as one person and this relationship is sealed with blood forever. In the Hebrew language, the word for covenant is “Bereeth” which means to “cut”, that is why they always refer to it as “cutting a covenant”. In the real sense of it, the two parties that normally cut this covenant are usually representative people, and in some cases they are recognized by the courts of the land in which they live. In expressing the meaning of the covenants we will be making reference to the covenant between David and Jonathan as stated in the book of First Samuel chapter 17: 57 to the end and chapter 18: 1-4 with the covenant between Abraham and God as stated in the book of Genesis.
In the case of David and Jonathan, both of them were legal representatives of whatever they had, not only themselves, but also all their unborn children and the generations yet unborn. By the implications of this covenant relationship, all the unborn children were standing with them when they were making the covenants.
The Process Of Making Covenants
In making a covenant in its historical set up, it is by first taking off your shirt and giving it to the person with whom you are making that covenant, and this means that, every thing that you have belongs to the other party. The shirt is the symbol of yourself and your material possession. After the shirt removal, you will take off your sword and your bow and give them to him. This means that all your strength and all your weapon belongs to him, if he needs them. Finally, there will be the sealing of the covenant with Blood. Somewhere on the body, an incision is made which will remind that individual of his commitment.
In the Arabic world, if two men want to enter into blood covenant, their relatives and neighbours will be called together in the open place before the village fountain, to witness the covenant. The men will publicly announce their purpose, and their reasons for it. Their declarations will be written down in duplicate, one paper for each friend, and signed by themselves and by several witnesses. One of the friends will take a sharp lancet, and open a vein in the other’s arm. Into the opening thus made, he will insert a quill, through which he will suck the living blood. The lancet-blade will be carefully wiped on one of the duplicate covenant papers, and then it will be done vice versa. The two friends will declare together: “We are brothers in a covenant made before God: he who deceiveth the other, him will God deceive”. Each blood-marked covenant-record will then be folded carefully, to be sewed up in a small leathern case or amulet about an inch square to be worn henceforth by one of the covenant-brothers, suspended about the neck, or bound upon the arm, in token of indissoluble relation. The covenant thus made, is called in Arabic, M’ahadated-Dan, which means ‘Covenant of Blood’. The two persons thus conjoined, are called Akhwat el-M’ahadah in Arabic which means ‘Brothers of the Covenant’.
Like in the past, according to H. Clay Trumbull, in his classical book, “The Blood Covenant” he said that they (the party making the covenant) will cut their hands preferably the wrist, and bring the wrist at the cuts and the blood of each person would flow with the blood from the other person’s body running to the ground together, after which the marks will be rubbed with a black substance. This ceremony implies that all of your life is now poured into the life of the other fellow, and all of his life is now poured into your own. All that you are is his, and all that he is, is yours. By this you have entered into an everlasting covenant.
In some parts of Africa, if two people want to cut a blood covenant, they will come together with their relatives, friends and a priest. After the gathering, the first thing that they do is to exchange gifts, after which they will bring a cup of wine and the priest will make an incision on each others arm and allow both blood to drop into the cup of wine. The wine and blood mixture will be stirred together and both of them will drink it. After this, they will automatically become blood brothers.
Remember that to every covenant there are blessings and curses. If the covenant is broken the curses follows, but if the covenant is kept the blessings follows. Whenever they see the mark, they will always remember the covenant. This ceremony is always ended with a feast of bread and wine, in which they serve each other.
This means all that the other party is, has now become a part of yours. The wine signifies the blood, meaning their lives had been brought together (See Deuteronomy chapters 11 and 27)
Conclusively, everything done on this earth is for a purpose, so also is the Blood Covenant. One of the purposes why people, tribes, cut the Blood covenant is that if a strong man moves with a weak man there is the tendency for the strongman to destroy the weak man, so the only way for the weak man to protect himself is by cutting a blood covenant with the strongman; and this also applies to tribes. Some people also make blood covenant for the purpose of love, especially if they love themselves very much such as David and Jonathan and that will make the love to be a lasting one; some are for the purpose of business partnership as a form of oath. The Blood Covenant is so strong that no man take the advantage of it or breaks it.
The life of David and Jonathan is a clear bible record of cutting a Blood Covenant. In the book of I Samuel 18:1-4, we were made to understand that Jonathan enter into a Blood Covenant relationship with David because they love themselves SO strongly. Although in the King James version Translation of the Bible, it was not written clearly whether it was a blood covenant but in the Living Bible translation it was made clear as follows: -
Jonathan swore to be his blood brother 1Samuel 18:3
The Covenant that David and Jonathan made affected their generations that were yet unborn. This was clearly evident in the life of Mephiboseth the only son of Jonathan who was a lame. After the death of King Saul and Jonathan, his (Jonathan) son, Mephibosheth, was made to believe that David is against their family, that David was the only enemy he has on earth, and that he was the brain behind the death of his father and grandfather (king Saul); in fact he got a very bad impression about King Saul. But Mephibosheth himself did not know that he was in a Blood - Covenant with King David, because he was in the loins of Jonathan his father when he made that covenant with David. Even though Jonathan was dead, that did not nullify the power of the BLOOD COVENANT - 1 Samuel 20: - 22.
On the part of David, whenever looks at his wrist he would remember the covenant between him and Jonathan So he started looking for the remaining members of the family of Jonathan and at last he heard of Mephibosheth and sent for him.
When Mephiboseth came to the palace of King David he was trembling and was afraid, thinking that David wanted to kill him and was feeling unworthy in his presence. When David looked at Mephibosheth and then at the scar in his hand, he said in essence, “Mephibosheth, I am doing this for the sake of Jonathan. Regardless of what you have done or what kind of character you may have, I have seen the scar in my wrist and I do remember the Blood that was shed. I am going to treat you on the basis of the Blood Covenant that was sealed before you were born. From hence forth, I am going to treat you like my own son; everybody in my land abroad will respect you as a Prince and not like a dead dog which you said you are”.
On the part of Mephibosheth he has no sacrifice to pay for the NEW LIFE but to reach out and receive it, because it is a free gift from David. A life from slavery, bondage, suffering to the very throne room (palace) of the King, where there is honour, freedom, enjoyment, peace and what have you. Mephibosheth has to forget his former life to enable him enter into the Blood Covenant life. He doesn’t need to share his Blood again but the Blood of his father Jonathan and David has been shed. All he needs to do is just forget about his past life while in Lodebar.
Though people may accuse him in the palace that he is not supposed to be there, talking less of enjoying the benefits, he did not argue with them because he knows that it did happen because of the Blood Covenant. Anytime such accusation is made against him, he will only have to refer them to King David and asked them to look at the scar on the wrist of David which was a sign of the Blood Covenant. With this blood covenant, Mephibosheth became the BLOOD BROTHER of King David.
From the truths revealed in David and Jonathan covenant relationship, one can rightly say that Mephibosheth has right to David’s INHERITANCE. The Bible as you may know is a covenant book and is a book full of types. A type is a divinely inspired illustration of some truths; it may be a person, an event, a thing, an institution or a ceremony. The New Testament is in the Old Testament contained, while the Old Testament is by the New Testament explained. As we shall see later, God himself also made a blood covenant with Abraham and the New Testament believers are the continuation of this covenant.
The covenant between David and Jonathan was a type of the new covenant between God and man. Even as David entered into a Blood covenant with Jonathan, so God entered into a Covenant with you and me. David is the type of God in this covenant relationship, while the house of Saul is a type of the world. From the study of the life of Saul you will know that Saul fell out of fellowship with God and his whole household wandered away from God. But there was only one person who acknowledged God and he was 100% of Saul’s family, and that was Jonathan. On the other hand, David was completely for God. Just as David had problems with the house of Saul, so God had problems with the entire populace of the world. Let’s look at those verses which show us that man is out of tune with God.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isa. 53:6
11. There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
23. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Rom. 3:11, 23
By this analogy, it will be quite difficult for God to enter into covenant relationship with man because man’s ways and God’s ways are not the same; that is there is no concord. Like the case of David and Jonathan, it was only Jonathan from the household of Saul that had one mind with David, and they loved themselves so much, that was why the covenant cutting became a possibility. But in the case of God there was no man who is worthy to enter into Blood Covenant with God. So God has to send his son Jesus Christ into the world to be born through a virgin. He was 100% man and also 100% God. This means He can stand as the REPRESENTATIVE COVENANT HEAD for man. Mephibosheth did not tell Jonathan his father to enter into Blood Covenant relationship with King David, but he (Jonathan) did while we (man) on our own did not tell Jesus Christ to enter into Blood Covenant with God but He did, and that is what we call “Grace”. Beloved I want you to realize that-as Mephibosheth was in the loins of Jonathan when the covenant was made, so we are in Christ. Remember that the covenant feast which is a part of the Blood Covenant Ceremony was done by Jesus; that is what we call the last supper, as it is shown in the following verses.
26. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and break it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
27. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28. For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matt. 26:26-28
This Blood Covenant was not a strange thing to the Jewish people that was why the disciples did not ask Jesus any question about it. You see, Jesus has to go to the cross to take the cut on his body so as to spill the blood for the covenant to be complete (2 Cor. 5:21).
Church, the price has been paid; all you and I need do is to partake in His INHERITANCE which has been given to us freely because of the covenant. And like as we know, the old covenant was sealed with circumcision, but the New Covenant as stated in the New Testament part of the Bible is sealed with the New Birth.
