Very little is known about Homer. Due to this lack of information, many specialists have doubted his existence. There are therefore two different viewpoints regarding Homer’s life:

Those that believe Homer existed. The see him as a bard; a poet who told stories, having lived between the 8th and 7th century B.C. They also believe him to be the author of The Iliad and The Odyssey. Those who don’t believe he existed and that the name Homer was just the name given to a group of bards who together wrote the two works for which he is credited.

At this time, the debate has still not been resolved and each side has valuable arguments.

The Odyssey is a Greek epic poem with more than 12000 verses. The story is divided into 24 books and focuses on the character of Odysseus and his return from the Trojan War. It is split into three main sections; firstly, the assembly of the gods when it is decided that Odysseus will return to Ithaca; then the adventures Odysseus experiences in the ten years between leaving Troy and arriving in Ithaca; and finally Odysseus’ return and his revenge on his contenders, which wins him back his family, his honour and his assets.

The work’s originality, which has inspired many authors throughout the ages, has given it an international reputation and its effects are still visible today.
