Epilogue

PREFACE

“Study? Sooooo boring!”

Each one of us has loved to hate studies, and still managed to get through. We have always envied the so called “scholars” of our class, who could score twice the marks with half the study. And who will like something that he is not successful at?

But as is true with every game, there are certain rules to study. Certain methods, ways and techniques to study better. When one plays the game of study with these rules, it becomes beautifully simplified and extremely easy. And that’s what this book is all about.

Most of us would be using some technique outlined in this book. But, it must be something that we learnt by trial and error, by experience. Super Student is an attempt to compile this trial and error experience archive into a comprehensive book. It’s just all about using experiences of others to your benefit. You needn’t burn yourself to know fire is hot.

What is the source of the book? How are these 65 odd chapters written? You have a right to know, and you must. This book is a compilation from a variety of sources – the main is experience of students. It is one thing that none of us can afford to ignore, as it’s the best teacher. Students have realised these insights, some of which are learnings of entire student careers.

There is another aspect to this. All the information that is in this book is knowledge too. It has been cross checked and verified by many others, and has worked with most. With some tweaking it will definitely work for you too. Only it needs to be applied in the right context.

Another important thing is to have a balance – even the best technique applied extremely will fail miserably, and in balance, even poison is beneficial. Apply with a lot of caution, without depending solely on any particular technique or method. It is an integrated approach that will give you the best results.

This is the beginning of a unique relationship between you and me. We are to share some of the best insights of the art of studying. The role of this book is also reminding you of what you already know. Thus, to start, I’ll begin with this prayer.

…May every word in this book find the perfect thought in your mind.

IN PRACTICE

Now, make a reading schedule for this book - it will help you stay on track and make sure you complete the entire book right upto the end.

All you have to do is just to fill up this sheet with dates that you plan to read the chapters. Allocate ample buffer days <free days> in between so that even if your plans go haywire, you have some extra time on hands.

The done column will be a tick or a cross depending on whether you achieved your target or not.

Don’t forget to reward yourself for completing the book!

1. BECOME A SUPER STUDENT

There is always a better way. You can do much better. You need to learn the tricks of the game, and become a super student.

The very fact that you picked up this book, goes on to show your interest in learning ways to study better and score more marks. Your commitment has just started. But ask yourself first – are you just interested in more marks and effective study habits or are you “committed” to it? There is a big difference.

Just like superman is an extraordinary man, you are going to become a super student. But you need to be committed to being one. You need to be ready to experiment. Your commitment is the ultimate bottom line of this entire book. And if you are truly dedicated to make a lasting change, this book will produce miraculous results.

This is the first step to improving – setting newer standards for yourself. Absolutely refuse to accept your old behavior. Tolerate nothing less than excellence. Ask yourself – who is ultimately in control? You!! Take control – this very moment. NOW!!

So from today you are not an ordinary student. Not someone who cribs and hates studies. You are a super student. Someone who is going to learn the secrets of effective studies. Someone who is going to change his entire career graph. Congratulations, super student!

From now on, use the word super student for yourself, as frequently as possible. Repeating this with faith gets amazing results!

IN PRACTICE

Now that you’ve resolved to become a Super Student, first put your resolution on paper

Now let us list the qualities of the Super student

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best and 1 being the least, rate yourself on these qualities. Also see what you consider as ideal i.e what you must really have.

The difference between the two will give you the improvement needed in a certain area. Work more in areas that need more improvement.

We have given you some qualities to get you started. Fill up the rest as you feel.

You can also do this analysis with the negative qualities, to find out further improvements.

2. HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

A lot of thought has gone behind the structure of this book, and you’ll appreciate why the book has been so written. You need to know how to use a tool rather than just have it. The most common mistake that we make with books, especially the self-help ones is to just read them, and never apply. Only 10% of readers read a book beyond it’s first chapter!

Super Student is all about making small changes that get BIG results. These distinctions will make great differences to the final product- which is your result. The best thing about this book is that you don’t need to finish this book. It is made up of many small chapters. Whenever you have a few minutes, you can just open a random page and read a chapter.

Every chapter is also very concise realising that students have less time and resistence to reading, in general. You can apply what you learn in each chapter immidiately, and see the results for yourself. That’s the beauty of the whole book – it can be applied as and when it is read.

You can directly skip to any chapter whenever you want, but try to read the entire book in sequence, since the chapters build upon each other. Each chapter is like a sip of tea, you have to take it sip by sip. Gulping it down will be no fun. So also sitting down at one place and reading out the entire book in an hour will only leave you with information.

Apply the information as and when you get it, instead and see the results for yourself. You will be astonished to see how easy it is to apply the methods.

Also highly recommended is having a journal alongwith your reading. Daily after you read a chapter, scribble notes on the journal. This would mainly include what you understood from a particular chapter and how do you plan to apply it. As you progress, keep a rack of your schedule, thoughts and plans. This will be a great asset when you analyse your growth.

Also don’t forget that knowledge multiplies by sharing. So also, share whatever you have learnt from this book with others. Not only will it help you revise mentally what you’ve read, it will also help the person you are sharing with. And yes, don’t bluff!

With a resolution to become a super student and the knowledge of how to use this book, you’re now ready to become…. A SUPER STUDENT!

IN PRACTICE

Let us first test your general motivation for reading. List here 5 books that you’ve read cover to cover.

How much time did you take to fill in these five names? This will give you an insight into your reading habits, and you can plan your reading accordingly.

If you couldn’t fill up these five, it means that you need to be careful, because chances of leaving this book in the middle are high!.

Another very important thing is to track the changes that will take place as you read and apply this book.

The more you apply it, the greater the changes will be. However, if there are no changes in your marks, there is something seriously wrong with your strategy. Review it.

Fill up the subjects and the marks that you have scored in them. After one month of completing the reading and applying, fill it up again. See the changes and fine tune your strategy accordingly.

Do this once again after 6 months. Congratulate yourself, if you have really improved.

If there have been no changes, talk it out with other SUPER STUDENTS.

3. IT’S NO BIG DEAL

For the Super Student, nothing is a big deal. Studies are important but not the only thing in life. As a Super Student you must be aware that Harvard Business School studies have suggested that academic knowledge accounts only for 15% of your total skills. At the same time, Al Ries and Jack Trout give odds of 1:60 on education as a base of a dream life. Some odds those!!

Then you must remember examples like Bill Gates, who dropped out of school to create a fortune for himself. Doesn’t it go a long way to show that education is not as important as it is made up to be?

In spite of living in a society that’s obsessed with studies, the Super Student does not get bogged down. As a Super Student you must know that overemphasizing studies is the best way of putting undue pressure on yourself.

There are many around you, for whom the only aim of life is academic achievement. They will naturally tend to overreact to anything that’s study related – like not knowing a sum or working on for hours on a project. As a Super Student just remember one thing – it’s no big deal.

The idea is not to discourage you from studying. But remember that even failure on your part to score or live up to expectations is not the end of the world. The Super Student studies for knowledge, marks are by product.

TIP Scribble these words – “It’s no big deal” at the back page of your books. Whenever you are overwhelmed, glance at them for instant relief!

IN PRACTICE

Now that you know there’s a lot you can do apart from studies, it’s again time for some practical work! Remember the mantra: “It’s no BIG Deal!”
