Stendhal, whose real name was Henri Beyle, was born in Grenoble in 1783 to a bourgeois family. In Paris, under the Directory, he was impassioned by the debates which sharpened his critical spirit. He discovered Italy and Germany during military campaigns as part of Bonaparte’s army. After 1815, he became an art critic in Milan and wrote touristic works which he signed under his pseudonym. From 1830, Louis-Philippe named him French Consul in Trieste and then Civitavecchia. It was here that he completed his most famous novels (The Red and the Black (1830), The Charterhouse of Parma (1839)) and an autobiography (The Life of Henry Brulard (1835-1836)). A stroke brought him back to Paris in 1841. He died the following year, leaving several manuscripts incomplete.
The Red and the Black was published in November 1830, but did not gain the same level of success at the time that it has today.
The story takes place between 1826 and 1830 and mainly tells the story of the romantic relationship between Julien Sorel, a young seminarian and Madame de Rênal, an older lady whose husband doesn’t understand her.
The title of the book has been subject to many different interpretations. For some people it symbolises military uniform (which Julien dreamt of wearing) and a priest’s cassock (Julien eventually dedicates himself to an ecclesiastical career). Others see the black as hypocrisy, while Julien prefers the red of sacrifice. Others still link the title to the colours used in games of chance (such as roulette or cards) or political parties.
Part one
Verrières is a small, imaginary village in the Franche-Comté. Julien Sorel is the third-born son of a carpenter. As the child’s thirst for education causes his father’s contempt, Father Chélan takes him under his wing: Julien recites the New Testament with him, all the while being secretly fascinated by Napoléon Bonaparte’s life.
