The American author Cormac McCarthy was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1933, and is considered to be one of the most significant authors of his generation. His novels are mostly about the inherent violence of American society and are characterised by a pronounced sense of pessimism. He has written a number of novels, including All the Pretty Horses (1992), which received both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award that year.
No Country for Old Men (2005), which is about drug trafficking in Texas, was successfully adapted for film by the Coen brothers (Joel, born in 1954, and Ethan, born in 1957) in 2007. The film won four Oscars, including the award for Best Picture.
The Road, which was first published in the USA in 2006, is Cormac McCarthy’s most recent novel. It tells the story of a father and son’s travels through a postapocalyptic wasteland, and has two features in particular which set it apart from the rest of the author’s work. Firstly, the violence featured in The Road is much more extreme, and it transcends the boundaries of American society to give the novel a metaphysical and universal dimension. Secondly, story’s surprisingly optimistic ending seems to suggest that redemption is possible for humankind.
The novel was extremely well received by critics and readers alike. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 2007 and was adapted for the cinema by John Hillcoat (Australian film director, born in 1961) in 2009.
In a world where society has collapsed in the wake of a disaster, the nature of which is left vague, a nameless father and son set off for the southern United States in order to escape the harsh winter. The father draws on all his skill and courage to make the best of the situation for the sake of his son, who was born after the natural disaster. The child’s mother committed suicide after giving birth to him. To begin with, the father told his son stories about the way the world was before the catastrophe and tried to extol the values of solidarity and humanism, but now he has nothing left to talk about.
Furthermore, hordes of cannibals roam the country, and the father and son come across some on their way. They must therefore be constantly on their guard and remain hidden. They do not know the date or their precise location, and navigate using the position of the sun in the sky.
They are alone, carrying various objects with them in a rucksack and a supermarket trolley: jars, some tools, blankets, tarpaulins, children’s toys and a revolver loaded with two bullets. Most of their possessions have been scavenged from the roadside. They are both dirty, gaunt and terrified.
