WhyistheUCATused?

Formedicalschools,choosingthebestapplicantsishard.Everyyear,

medicalschoolsarefloodedwithtalentedapplicants,allofwhomhavetop

gradesandgreatpersonalstatements.Theyfelttheyneededextra

informationtohelpthemfindtheverybestfromthepoolofverytalented

applicantstheyalwayshad.That’swhyadmissionstestswerecreated.

TheUCATwasfirstintroducedin2006tohelpmedicalschoolsmaketheir

choices.Thetestexaminesskillsindifferentareas,allofwhicharerelated

tocriticalthinkinganddecisionmaking.Theideawastocreateapure

aptitudetest,somethingwhichcannotbepreparedfor.However,thisis

certainlynotthecasewiththeUCAT,andthisisevenacknowledgedby

UCATitselfbasedontheirresearch.Inourexperience,youcanimprove

yourUCATscorewithonlyasmallamountofwork,andwithproper

organisedpreparationtheresultscanbefantastic.

Statisticsshowthatwithoutconsolidatingandreviewingyourmistakes,

you’relikelytomakethesamemistakesagain.Don’tbeastatistic.Look

backoveryourmistakesandaddressthecausetomakesureyoudon’t

makesimilarmistakeswhenitcomestothetest.Youshouldavoidguessing

inearlypractice.Highlightanyquestionsyoustruggledwithsoyoucango

backandimprove.

PositiveMarking

Whenitcomestothetest,themarkingschemeisonlypositive–youwon’t

losepointsforwronganswers.Yougainamarkforeachcorrectanswer

anddonotgainoneforeachwrongorunansweredone.Therefore,ifyou

aren’tabletoansweraquestionfully,youshouldguess.Sinceeachquestion

providesyouwith3to5possibleanswers,youhavea33%to20%chance

ofguessingcorrectly–somethingwhichislikelytotranslatetoanumber

ofpointsacrossthetestasawhole.

Ifyoudoneedtoguess,trytomakeitaneducatedone.Bygivingthe

questionamoment’sthoughtormakingabasicestimation,youmaybeable

toeliminateacoupleofoptions,greatlyincreasingyourchancesofa
