Getting the Best from This Study
The purpose of this study is to give you a greater understanding of what it means to live a fulfilling spiritual life. It will give you the tools to live life in relationship with the Holy Spirit. Applying what you learn here will give you the ability to manage your emotions and live victoriously regardless of circumstances. Life with the Holy Spirit is life with an advantage. It is a life of righteousness, peace, joy, and purpose.
Imagine having all the tools and materials needed to build your dream house and having no idea how to use them. It would be frustrating. You would be upset and disappointed because of your inability to achieve the thing you desire.
Often many lose their zeal for the faith, settle for a marginal experience, or lose sight of God and become disillusioned at the prospect of living the abundant, joyful life that Jesus promised. Far too common is the thought that a mystical, ethereal moment will one day overtake you, and it will just happen, or you shrug your shoulders believing you will “understand it better by and by.”
The truth is the Word of God is relevant and useful. It must be applied and practiced to best experience its benefits. Taking the steps to apply what God has revealed, is transformative. Which is the point of your new life in Christ. Romans 12:1-2 says, “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice, the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
To get the most out of this study, you must release what you think you know about the Holy Spirit and have an open mind. One of the greatest flaws of Christian practice is misunderstanding the purpose and power of the Holy Spirit. Limited understanding allows believers to conclude that the habitation of the Holy Spirit is manifested in full bodily worship (shouting, running, dancing, etc.) or that the Holy Spirit is just an addendum -- a tagged on, honorably mentioned entity of the Triune God mentioned only in our liturgies.
As you or your group complete this study, you will know the person of the Holy Spirit, His dwelling in you, and how He empowers you to live the transformed life Jesus promised. You will learn to apply strategies that will help you to live a life that is not dominated by your emotions but allow you to access and choose to live with the mind of Christ.
