Marcel Proust was born in 1871 and was one of the major French writers of the 20th century. In 1919 he was awarded the Prix Goncourt, France’s most prestigious literary award, for Within a Budding Grove, the second volume of his monumental seven-part novel In Search of Lost Time. The novel as a whole interweaves a chronicle of the society of the Belle Époque with an exploration of the nature of love and aesthetic, philosophical and moral reflections, resulting in a groundbreaking work that stunned his contemporaries and inspired lively critical debate that shows no signs of abating even today.

Time Regained, the seventh and final volume of In Search of Lost Time, was published in 1927, five years after Proust’s death. It is divided into three parts, each of which is set during a different time period: the first part is set shortly before the First World War in the French town of Tansonville, where the narrator is staying with the Saint-Loups; the second part takes place in Paris during the war; and in the third part, which brings Time Regained and the work as a whole to a close, the narrator is attending a gathering at the Princess of Guermantes’ house in Paris many years later.

SUMMARY

TANSONVILLE

The narrator is staying with the Saint-Loup family in Tansonville. He regularly goes out walking with Gilberte, which reminds him of the walks of his childhood. She tells him that “The Guermantes Way” (the desire for prestige) and “Swann’s Way” (romantic desire) are not incompatible, and that she was attracted to him when she was younger. However, he no longer feels anything for her in return and does not tell her that he once sold a vase so that he could buy her flowers.

The narrator describes the change in his appearance, his love for Morel, the lies he has told Gilberte and the way the Guermantes type predominates in him. He then talks to Gilberte about Albertine.
