To all the diverse individuals who walk through a less than perfect life and survive hard times, you are worthy. I appreciate all the hard work you’ve accomplished to be here and read my book.
You are amazing, and don’t let anyone else tell you different.
I wanted to add a side of humor in my heart wrenching love stories, so I hope you giggle as much as I did while writing this.
This couldn't be more awkward. Zandia, the head enforcer of the Shifter Council, sat across the table, her attention focused on me. My assistant and right hand male sat at the table with us, drinking beer faster than he could handle. When I'd stepped into her local office last month, neither of us could have known how far this would go. I didn't regret standing up for Graham or being the only reason he was happily mated now, but Zandia's antics were pissing me off.
"Planning on sitting here all night? I've never seen you stay in one place this long before." Lifting my beer, I took a swig and set it down like her presence wasn't dredging up painful memories.
"Does my presence bother you?" Her gaze remained focused on me, not drifting a fraction despite the glances and whispers all around us. "We don't want the elusive Mr. Lockhart to dally in a bar when he has more important people to antagonize."
I adjusted my glasses before refocusing my attention on her. "Not at all. I know you're a busy female and wouldn't want to impede on your industrious nature."
Max slouched further into his seat. I didn't blame him. If Zandia hadn't stolen everything that ever mattered to me, maybe I would be afraid of her, but she had. So fuck this bitch. I'd spend every day of the rest of my life impeding her mission to ruin lives.
"Remember the deal. If you break the agreement, I'll know, then I'll go back and arrest all of them." Zandia tucked a stray hair back into her braid. "Oh, and Wyatt, nothing you do will be able to save them this time."
Before I could let my witty response fly, she disappeared.
Max hissed. "She shouldn't be doing shit like that."
"Didn't you know, the rules don't apply to her." I pushed up my glasses and picked up my table of reports I needed to look over. Business was booming, and I was behind on quarterly reviews. I'd spent too much time getting involved with the shifter speed dating defense, so I ignored the pull to look through the bar Luna and Felix bought a few months ago.
"After a quick review of all the projects, I believe these two are the most critical right now." Max flashed his tablet at me. "Everything else appears to be performing within your parameters."
I glanced away from the tablet, my vision locking on a gorgeous human female working behind the bar. She squatted down for a few seconds, then straightened and made a comment to the bartender. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail and she wore leather work overalls. On her right cheek was a streak of something dark. The moment she looked up, our eyes locked for a fraction of a second, then I dropped my gaze.
I refocused on my tablet, trying to read the report, but the words disappeared. Sounds from the bar and people mingling morphed into a full roar. Every atom in my body wanted to look up, to find the female again and make sure she was okay. There was no reason for me to think she was in danger, but even my beast roared, begging for one more glimpse of her.
What the hell was wrong with me?
"Wyatt?"
My attention snapped back. "What?"
Max's eyebrows furrowed at me. "You okay there, buddy? You're not paying attention to a single word I'm saying."
"I'm fine." It came out as a growl even though I hadn't meant to. Without looking up, I could feel her presence move. A deep need sent a burst of fire through my veins, awakening my long dormant beast.
"You're not fine, Wyatt. I don't know what's going on with you, but the temperature in the area around you is going up like crazy. Whatever is happening, it's big." Max rolled up his sleeves and started fanning himself.
I let out an antiquated curse as my eyes shot back to the female. Mine. I shoved my beast back, hoping he'd resume his slumber. Our mate was long gone, so this female couldn't be one too. Besides, my kind was so rare these days, if I changed, even these shifters would take notice.
"Max, go get the manager on duty. I don't know if Felix is here, but I'm on the verge of doing something drastic if she doesn't leave." Pain sliced through me at the words. No, I wanted her closer. He disappeared without a word, and my attention refocused on her. My fingers dug into the table, trying to hold me back. What did her voice sound like? Would it grow husky when she was aroused?
"Wyatt, the manager is on his way. What are you doing? No, you need to stay here." I barely felt his fingers grasping my wrist and then my shoulder. He hissed and released me.
I couldn't fight my beast, he was too strong, and I was out of practice from the decades he'd laid dormant inside of me. My feet propelled me toward the female even as she squatted down and measured a long metal support bar. Running footsteps enclosed on me even as the rest of the bar grew silent.
She must have felt me move closer because she stood and faced me with a surprised look. Her gaze roamed over me before returning to my face. "Can I help you?"
"Wyatt!" I ignored the voices calling me. My blood felt like it was boiling, like I was on the verge of spontaneously combusting.
"Yes, you can." I leaned closer, feeling the pull become stronger now that she was close enough to touch. "Grant me the honor of accepting me as your mate."
As the words escaped my mouth, I felt the fire consume me. My mate slapped a hand over her mouth as her eyes widened. Flames licked along my skin, erupting into the shape of an enormous bird around us, protecting my female and myself from the people surrounding us. The fire vanished just as quickly as my inner phoenix was reborn. The smoke from the fire clouded the area, then I heard a shrill noise pierce the room. Water rained down from the ceiling, soaking both of us.
