Chapter 1
“Well, Colonel, you cannot deny the improvements in her elocution!” Henry boasted as his friend circled Eliza like a gentleman taking in a zoo animal.
“I practice every day!” Eliza said. And she had practiced extensively, altering the tone of every word she uttered. She did not like Henry; he was the worst kind of gentleman, snooty, self-righteous, and pompous, but he had agreed to give her half of his winnings from the Colonel, and that would be worth every frustrating day she had spent in his parlour.
"Indeed she has improved," Colonel Pickering conceded, adjusting his monocle. "The tone is quite refined. But I still detect something... common in her choice of words."
Henry's face darkened. "That is precisely what I've been laboring to correct. You see, Colonel, despite my best efforts, the flower girl persists beneath the veneer of a lady. But our bet was not that she would have the conversation of a lady, only that she would sound like one and in this, I have succeeded."
Eliza straightened her back. "I speak better than most ladies I've 'eard at them fancy gatherings you've dragged me to."
