Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), a Scottish writer and great traveller, was inspired to write his stories by the memories of his travels through France, America and the Samoan islands. A sickly adolescent, he abandoned his studies to dedicate himself to writing. His rhythmic and unrealistic stories were innovative for their time.
Amongst his most famous novels are Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879), Treasure Island (1883) and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886). He also wrote essays on the theory of literature, as well as descriptive and informative essays about the Pacific Islands. Stevenson was one of the first Europeans to defend the indigenous population of the Samoan islands against colonial powers.
Treasure Island was first published as a serial novel in a British magazine. The first edition in novel form was made available in 1883. The work recounts the adventures of young Jim Hawkins who is part of a band of pirates searching for treasure and it quickly became a literary classic of the adventure genre and saw colossal success. Treasure Island has been adapted many times for cinema and as comic strips. The image of a pirate described in the novel has also been reproduced, to the point where it is entrenched in the collective imagination.
