Since his childhood, Paulo Coelho dreamt of becoming a writer, but his parents wanted him to be an engineer like his father. At the age of 38, he took the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage and converted to Christianity, thus reviving the Jesuit teaching in which he had been educated. A short while after this spiritual experience, he wrote his first novel, The Pilgrimage (1987). One year later, he published The Alchemist which earned him worldwide recognition. His novels, which have been translated into almost 80 languages, are all bestsellers, and have sold at least 175 million copies. Paulo Coelho entered the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 2002 and has been a Messenger of Peace for the United Nations since 2007.
Published in 1998, Veronika Decides to Die is the 11th novel by Paulo Coelho. In it, the author tells the story of Veronika who decides to commit suicide. After her attempt fails, she wakes up in a psychiatric hospital. She meets many people there who encourage her to question her understanding of insanity and of life.
The author takes a moment in the book to explain to us that he uses this convoluted method – namely writing this novel – to recount a painful part of his adolescence, using the traits of the character Eduard. In fact, at the age of 17, Coelho refused to follow in the footsteps of his father who, distraught by this rebellion, could find no other solution than to commit his son to a psychiatric hospital. The young writer escaped from “his prison” three times before being officially freed at the age of 20.
