Michael Morpurgo is an English author who was born in London in 1943. Trained as a teacher, he began writing his first novels for his pupils. Over 40 works, primarily children’s books, would later be published and win numerous prizes: the most famous are War Horse (1982), Kensuke’s Kingdom (1999) and Private Peaceful (2003). Several of his works have been adapted for the stage or screen.

War Horse was published in 1982. The story, set in World War I, has the original characteristic of being narrated in the first person through the eyes of a horse named Joey. Through his adventures, a vision of conflict emerges where divisions disappear, where soldiers are just men like the others, and where friendship and trust become fundamental values. The novel, which was specially republished in France, Germany and the UK for the 90th anniversary of the conflict, was adapted for cinema by Steven Spielberg in 2012.
