The true nature of magic

What is magic really? When we come into contact with this topic in everyday life, it is usually through TV series such as "Charmed" or "Sabrina". There we are presented with an image of magic that, while not fundamentally wrong, is highly distorted. You say a spell, burn a few herbs, it goes "poof" and "bang" and the desired effect simply materializes out of nowhere. In this world, anything seems possible if you just have the right ritual or spell and belong to the limited selection of people who have magical abilities. At the same time, however, this gift always comes with the responsibility not to abuse it. Thus, TV witches usually become demon hunters, as in the case of "Charmed", in order to put their abilities at the service of humanity. While there is nothing fundamentally wrong with this concept and therefore nothing to criticize, one should be aware that this is television entertainment.

Although it would be possible to portray magic in its true complexity in a TV series, the result would not be particularly popular. Magic does indeed exist, but it usually manages without spectacular effects and happens so naturally that we don't even notice it. At the same time, although mastering magic does not require genetic predisposition, it does require a great deal of effort on the part of the individual. This includes things such as self-reflection, personal development, regular training of mental and physical abilities, meditation, energy work, fasting and much more. As is so often the case, reality in the field of magic also appears rather boring and is therefore, realistically presented, not suitable for television entertainment. Nevertheless, I would go so far as to say that there are at least as many people around the world who are seriously interested in magic as those whose idea of magic is based on role models such as "Harry Potter", "Charmed" or "Sabrina". True magic is not quite as boring and exhausting as it may seem at first glance.

So when I say that magic actually exists, I'm not talking about the kind of magic that Harry Potter and co. use to make the world a more interesting and better place. True magic is much more subtle, because in order to finally approach a definition, magic should first of all no longer be considered a noun, but a verb. Magic is not a "thing", it is rather an activity that consists of consciously controlling the forces around us. Therefore, in order to truly understand magic in depth, one should first become aware of the fundamental nature of existence. Everything that exists consists of energy, "solid matter" is basically just an illusion. To illustrate this, let's take a look at the human body and consider it on all levels. In the macrocosm, this body consists of arms, legs, torso and head. However, if we go one level deeper, we find countless associations of living cells. Under the electron microscope, we can begin to experience the microcosm: the cells consist of molecules, which in turn consist of atoms and electrons, and if we could visualize the next level, we would find ourselves in the world of quanta.

The quantum level is the "smallest" level of existence that we have been able to identify so far, and we know that everything within existence is made up of quanta: light, energy, people, animals, plants, stars and planets. But the magic doesn't stop there, because even seemingly empty space is filled with the quantum field. In an absolute vacuum, which is actually defined by emptiness, fluctuations of this quantum energy can still be measured. It is therefore an omnipresent form of energy that forms itself into solid bodies and at the same time does not take on any visible form and instead simply seems to permeate everything. The laws at the quantum level completely contradict the laws of physics as we know them; quanta are waves and particles at the same time, they can exist simultaneously in different places and "communicate" over infinite distances without any loss of time. In my opinion, it is on this level that we find the answer to the question of magic, because it is precisely here that the laws on which magic is based prevail. Everything is possible on this level and it is the level from which the whole of existence is formed. Although the physical laws of our material plane do not seem to allow us to make use of the laws of the quantum plane, this is precisely the aim of magic. By learning to make conscious contact with this level, a person can also learn to exert a targeted influence on it. Unconsciously, we all do this all the time, for example the form of energy we know as thought is, like everything else, connected to the quantum level. Every thought arrives in the quantum field and causes a reaction there, which is why every thought is already a magical action. Everything within existence is connected via the quantum field and this is particularly noticeable at the thought level. Everyone knows the effect of suddenly thinking of someone and then being called by that person a short time later. The moment we think of someone, we already make contact with this person on a quantum level and connect with them. The other person senses this instinctively and reacts by also directing their thoughts towards this person. Whether we call this telepathy or magic is irrelevant, because it is basically the same principle.

Now we come to the question of whether it is actually possible to learn this mastery of the basic forces and whether every person can do this. The answer is clearly yes, albeit with certain restrictions. Anyone can learn to use magic consciously. Magical abilities are not something that is only reserved for certain people, as magic permeates our entire existence and pervades us all. However, conscious control through magic is far more complex than some might expect. I have already said that everything is connected to everything else at quantum level. This creates an infinite potential of possibilities and influencing factors. However, in order to be able to have a targeted effect on a specific area of existence, you have to be aware of all the factors that are involved. You have to know how these individual factors affect the whole thing, how they interact, etc. This brings us to the problem that causes most beginners in magic to fail and lose their faith.

Theoretically, it is always possible to exert a targeted influence on a complex system in order to achieve a specific result. However, success or failure depends on an infinite number of factors. Sometimes one's own controlling share is not enough, sometimes certain influencing factors are not recognized and prevent success. This can also be illustrated with a simple, non-magical example. Let's assume you want to catch a school of fish in a small body of water. To do this, you first place a net in the water and then try to drive the animals into it. Normally this plan should work, but you can only see a few centimetres below the surface of the water. This is why you cannot see that there is a predatory fish between the fish and the net, which is also after the shoal and drives it away from the net. It's the same in magic, regardless of what you want to achieve, you can never recognize all the factors that have an influence and include them in the equation. However, by specifically training your own mental powers, you can get closer to this goal and, by combining your own powers with those of others, increase the effectiveness of the magic you use.

Therefore, magic is a craft or skill that requires consistent learning to master. At the same time, magic is also the tool we need to practice this craft. If you imagine an artist, the process of painting is as much magic as the brushes and paint the artist uses. In the beginning, an image is created in the artist's mind, then he chooses canvas, paint and other materials to manifest that image, bringing it into a physical form and thus into existence. While painting, the artist empties his mind and becomes the image that is created on the canvas. In the end, an object that previously only existed in the mind suddenly also exists on a material level. This is magic in its most basic form. Every idea that arises in our minds and is realized by us goes through this magical process of creation. Whether we create something with the help of our physical abilities without it having a "magical" effect, for example by preparing a meal, or whether we manifest something purely through the use of spiritual powers, the principle remains the same.

This way of looking at the world of magic may seem a little sobering at first, but once you think about it, the exact opposite is true. Magic is nothing "special", because it is in everything that exists, but it also makes it clear that our entire existence is profoundly magical. Looking at the world from this perspective frees our minds from rigid ideas of what is possible and what is not, and this is the first step towards successful magical work. I would now like to invite you, the reader, on a journey into the world of magic. On this journey, I will provide you with the necessary basic knowledge and the right tools so that you will ultimately be able to work magic and constantly develop your skills.

How to become a real witch

The term witch probably has a negative connotation for most people and is associated with old women who mix newt eyes, bat ears and similar obscure ingredients in a huge, bubbling cauldron to make magic potions, which they then use to curse other people. In our modern world, witches belong to the realm of legends and myths and as far as the image I have just conjured up is concerned, they are in fact just fairy tales. Witches do exist, but the term witch was cast in a correspondingly bad light by the Inquisition of the Catholic Church. In truth, witches have always been - and still are today - one thing above all else: women with knowledge of herbs - and occasionally men too - who have dedicated themselves to healing. Especially during the Inquisition, very few of the women accused of being witches actually used magic and the few exceptions mostly practiced white magic. Nowadays it is hardly any different, herbalism is still an important part of "modern witchcraft", but most "modern witches" also work magic, albeit white magic. You don't need innate magical powers to do this because, as we have already seen in the foreword, we all have magical abilities that simply need to be trained.

That is why I have made it my goal with this book to give you everything you need to be able to do real magical work and rightly call yourself a witch. Anyone can perform ritual instructions from a book and this is certainly a good way for beginners to get started, but there is a lot more to true magic. Above all, it requires solid basic knowledge, which we will focus on in the first three chapters . In the chapter 'Magic as the basis of existence', I begin by explaining what kind of magic has always been part of all our lives and how you can perceive it. In the next chapter, "The many faces of magic", we then look at the different forms in which magic is practiced and clarify basic questions about white and black magic. We then move straight into practicing the basics by looking at energy work, meditation, the energy body, magical tools, setting up an altar and preparing properly for magical work. Even in these first chapters, you will receive useful tips for the practical application of your new knowledge as well as numerous exercises.

Once you have mastered the basics, it's time to get down to business. In the chapter "Magic in practice", you will learn all about the teachings of the elements, the importance of astrology within magical practice, gemstones, plants and much more. Magic is much more than just an activity that you indulge in from time to time. It is a way of life and will change your lifestyle in a lasting and very positive way if you open yourself up to it. This becomes particularly clear in the chapter on the magic calendar. Within this book you will find a variety of suggestions for rituals and spells that you can easily copy, and as a little bonus, in the last chapter I explain step by step how you can develop your own spells and rituals that actually work. In addition, this book will serve as a comprehensive reference guide, where you will find the properties of stones and plants as well as information about the energy body and tables for determining the most favorable time for your spells. So let's finally begin our journey into the world of magic.

Magic as the basis of existence

The mysterious magic of everyday life

If you want to learn how to work magic successfully, you cannot avoid the first step: understanding magic in depth and feeling it. So let's start our journey now by me giving you exactly this understanding. When I say that you need to be able to feel magic, I basically mean nothing other than a deep, genuine understanding. Real understanding takes place on two levels, the rational and the emotional. When you learn to ride a bike as a child, the purely theoretical knowledge of how it works is of no use at all. It is only half of what you need to actually be able to ride a bike. Your parents have previously explained to you how to get on the bike, pedal and keep your balance. But at this point you have only understood part of the equation. Only when your body has sufficiently trained the necessary movements can you really ride. At this point, you no longer have to think about how to ride a bike, you just do it. The knowledge has moved from the rational, mental level to the physical, emotional level, it has been integrated.

This kind of understanding is the basis for the successful application of any skill, and magic is no exception. In magic, emotional understanding is much more important than the part that is based on rational knowledge. Magic thrives on emotions, because they activate it and provide it with an intention. The intensity of the emotion determines the strength of the effect. In order to work magic successfully, you must therefore also be in touch with your emotions and be able to control them. I would now like to use a few examples to show you how magic works in our everyday lives without us being aware of it. In this way, you will be able to intuitively recognize the magic that permeates and shapes your own life. This magic that determines your life may be positive or negative, depending solely on your individual circumstances. But if you can identify and sense it, you can also work with it and direct it in specific directions.

We most frequently encounter magic in everyday life in the form of telepathy, i.e. the transmission of thoughts from one person to another. You come home after a long day at work and have been craving a certain meal for hours. When you arrive, you realize that your partner has "accidentally" prepared this very meal without knowing about your desire. Many parents are familiar with the phenomenon of spontaneously thinking of a certain dish while shopping, for which they then buy the ingredients unplanned. When they return home, they are usually greeted by their children, who tell them that they have an appetite for a very specific dish - the one that suddenly popped into their heads while shopping. Dog and cat owners who do not live alone are often familiar with another phenomenon: as soon as the human leaves work and heads home, the animal becomes restless at home and moves into its "waiting place". For dogs, this is usually in front of the front door, for cats it tends to be on a windowsill with a view of the parking lot or apartment entrance. The animals then stay there until their humans arrive home. If another person stays at home while one person is away, they can observe very clearly how the animal adapts to the person's return from a certain point in time. This point in time can now be compared, which almost always leads to the impression being confirmed: The animals seem to be connected to their humans and somehow "sense" what is happening with the other person, even if they are not present.

The reason why such telepathic phenomena are called magic is because of the form of telepathy that comes into play here. When you think of someone, you automatically make contact with that person at the quantum level. It is as if you were calling this person and talking to them, only you are not aware of it. Everything you think now, you actually say to the person. The content of your message is also received by the other person, usually even "word for word", but in the vast majority of cases it is mistaken for your own thoughts. Nevertheless, the person reacts in some way in the same way that you would react to your own thoughts and impulses. A decision is made based on the thought or impulse. This process can be applied to each of the examples just mentioned:
