It is better to be taught how to fish than to be given some fish to eat. As a tutor that has the good of majority at heart, I have taken the pains on myself to prepare in order the step-by-step procedures involved and needed to create/design websites with ease.
Like a father nurturing his son, I have decided to hold your hand and make you walk with me to the better haven of the computer guru you intend to be as far as creation of website is concerned.
Probably you have at several times seen and wondered how websites are made. But I have good news for you that web designing can be demystified to you and you yourself create your own websites even if you have never created one before. This is a true saying and worthy of acceptation!
WordPress is a simple to configure and use content management system, so you should be able to understand it thoroughly. Now that you have decided you need a full-fledged website – not a blog, so we are going to use WordPress to build one. There are
two excellent, time-saving, traffic boosting reasons to build your static website with WordPress:
· WordPress provides the user with a full Content Management
System (plus many other features)
· WordPress blogs traditionally fare better with Google rankings and Search Engines, since they are so highly optimized
One other huge WordPress advantage is that you can keep your installed plugins, Widgets to instantly allow you to perform complex functions, such as search your site, log in with passwords, display an active calendar, translate to other languages – to name only a few, when you convert your blog to a static website.
With that been said, okay now, follow along.
First of all, I think that it is more convenient for a person to finish building his house before parking into it. So, what we are going to do first is introduce you to a practice platform known as XAMPP, on which you are going to practise all or at least most of the tools you are going to use to build your website with before transferring same to the internet. This is advisable as you will need to pay to host your website on the Internet, probably monthly or yearly subscription and, you will definitely need some time to practise with and master the blog/website creating software, WordPress, before you project your work to the general public, especially if you are new to it. So why waste your money while still practising.
Therefore, I am going to be making you go through an excellent platform whereby you can practise well as if you were already hosted on the Internet and later upload what you have created to the Internet or use your gained knowledge to create/build afresh whatever you wish when you are already hosted. You are going to learn about hosting at the end of the lessons.
Right now, we are going to create and manage a test server to install and configure a WordPress site on our local PC. Throughout this course all the training will be carried out on this test server, nevertheless the training could be carried out and
completed on a fully functioning host web server. But, sincerely speaking, carrying out the training on a test server like XAMPP will reduce your cost of practice greatly, especially if you are new to creating with WordPress. Yet if you desire to do everything once and for all on a paid host web server, you might need to skip to the lessons on WEB HOSTINGwhich is the last part of this e-book.
XAMPP
In this lesson we are going to use XAMPP to create a test web server, which will be used to host the WordPress test site right on your personal computer.
What is XAMPP?
XAMPP is an Apache distribution (software) containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. It is easy to install and it serves as a test hosting web server. It is equally easy to use. All you need to do is download it, extract and start using it. Currently there are four XAMPP versions:
XAMPP for Linux
XAMPP for Windows
XAMPP for Mac OS X
XAMPP for Solaris
Installation guide for each Operating System can be found at http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html, there you will go to download the XAMPP software too. In this lesson we shall be using Windows operating system, nevertheless the experience will be similar on other Operating Systems.
For Windows Operating System I recommend you use Windows 7 or higher. BUT NOTE: if you are using Windows OS, endeavor to deactivate User Access Control, as it limits the functionality of XAMPP.
The installation goes thus:
Go to http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html and download the latest version there, currently version 7.4.2. When you click to install for windows, the system will determine whether your system is 32bit or 64bit, and then click download again.
When you click the download button, it will bring you small dialogue box; click Save to save the download on your pc and let the download begin.
Voila, the download begins! When the download is completed, double click the downloaded package. Click run. Select language and click OK. Click OK. Click Next.
Select Destination folder and click next (By default the Xampp app chooses C:/xampp. Install it there).
HINT: Before clicking the Install button, make sure you are internet connected because the Install will prompt a redirect that requires an internet connection to load the page where you are going to download WordPress software which you are going to install on the XAMPP.
Select Install. Just chill and let the installation continue. When done, click Finish on the installation wizard dialogue box to complete the installation.
NOTE: Apache requires port 80, if this is in use the port can be changed, but you will have to note the other port because you will need to specify it when opening the page in a web browser. This will be covered soon in the lesson. The installer checks necessary ports:
Apache uses port 80
MySQL uses port 3306
Click Allow access for Windows Firewall, and check for private networks, I mean select private network. At the end, choose the language you prefer and click save.
After this step the XAMPP control panel launches automatically.
With your XAMPP control panel open, click Start in the fronts of Apache and MySQL.
Furthermore, click on Config (top right corner of the XAMPP Control Panel, see the illustration of the XAMPP Control Panel above). This will lead you to the below.
Select Apache and MySQL and click save. You will immediately be brought back to the XAMPP Control Panel. This latter step (Configuration) is necessary, for without it you will have to be starting the needed services manually each time you launch the XAMPP Control Panel. But if selected here and saved, the services start automatically each time you launch the XAMPP Control Panel.
IMPORTANT HINT: You may not see the XAMPP shortcut icon appearing on the desktop nor among the apps in the Start
menus. Do not worry, all you have to do is go to the Hard Drive partition or volume where you installed the XAMPP and click to open the XAMPP folder. For example: “Local Disk C”, after clicking the drive/volume, you will see the XAMPP folder. Double click to open it. After opening it, scroll down almost to
the end and you will see a file named “xampp-control”.
Right click on it and select Pin to Start. You can also select Pin to taskbar from here.
Let’s continue. In a web browser (Firefox or Chrome, or the like), type ‘localhost’ (do not include the quotation marks) in its URL
bar and hit enter. XAMPP Welcome screen confirms installation was successful.
NOTE: If the XAMPP Control Panel is not open, the localhost won’t show, likewise WordPress after you might have installed it on the XAMPP; the reason being that, XAMPP serves as the server that hosts your WordPress. So it is your pc’s local host.
From henceforth, whenever you want to work with XAMPP, maybe you want to install WordPress on it or open an already installed WordPress on it, you have to first of all open the XAMPP Control Panel from the Start menu or Taskbar where you have pinned it. Remember?
To open the XAMPP Control Panel, all you have to do is right click on the “xampp-control” icon pinned to the Start and select Run as administrator. (If you are using Windows 10 like me, see the illustration above for where to find the xampp-control at Start. See where the arrow is pointing.)
Alternatively, you can go from the taskbar by right clicking on the XAMPP icon pinned there and right clicking again on xampp-control and selecting Run as administrator. Voila, the XAMPP Control panel opens.
Like you have heard before, if the required port 80 for Apache is in use, you can specify another port for it, but the port you change it to must be specified in the web browser when opening the Welcome page or your web page. Assuming you change the default port 80 to 8080, you will have to type your address like the following in the address bar of your browser in order to access the XAMPP Welcome page or your web page after installing WordPress. http://localhost:8080
http://localhost:8080/wordpress (this example is for after the WordPress might have been installed).
But, if the XAMPP installation did not complain about non-availability of a port, you don’t need to bother yourself about changing port numbers or including a port number in your web address.
Installing WordPress on XAMPP is as simple as abc. Just as you were hinted the other time while installing XAMPP, remember, a web page was launched automatically while installing it. The page contains where you are expected to click and download the WordPress software. The page in question should look like the page you have below.
Click the WordPress app there (normally the first application among the many) to download it. Click Save to save it on your system.
Nevertheless, if you have missed the WordPress download page, this is the link to it: https://bitnami.com/stack/xampp?utm_source=bitnami&utm_medium=installer&utm_campaign=XAMPP%2BInstaller
If you are prompted to sign In with Google or Facebook or Microsft Account or Create a New Bitnami Account to continue to the download, choose one of the options and proceed.
HINT: Actually there are many web development applications (Content Management Software) that can be installed upon XAMPP but this time around we are working with WordPress.
After downloading the WordPress software, you will need to install it. Go to where you have downloaded it and double click on it.
Mind you, do not change the installation folder for the WordPress software from that of XAMPP. This is because you are installing the WordPress on it; therefore they have to be in the same folder. So, when it suggests the same folder as XAMPP to you, do not change it.
It begins like this: Select your language and then begin to OK and next and fill the required fields to install WordPress on your already installed XAMPP.
During the installation some fields will be required like username and password, the blog or website name and an email. (the blog/site’s name can be changed later under ‘Settings’ when you are logged in), just choose for yourself what you want and note
the pieces of information you supplied because they will serve as your log in details.
NOTE
