The Background Story of The Dutch House

For writing her newest novel, The Dutch House author Ann Patchett went through loads of research material and references to make her characters and story appear genuine and well fleshed out. Danny pursues a medical degree, but at his heart, he is a real estate businessman just like his father. To catch the nuances and daily proceedings of the real estate business, Ann Patchett did much research on the real estate around the ’60s and ’70s. Though her story was more about the relationship between the two siblings, she didn’t want the book to be just a hearsay version of novels. She spent most of her time reading, browsing books, and internet on the subject to make the struggle of Danny sound real. The author had an architect also known, coincidentally, as Cyril live as her neighbor. For grasping the efforts of real estate, she visited Cyril numerous times to understand the procedure and technicalities. Cyril owned a book explaining the architecture of houses in-depth, and the author had loved it. Cyril had described her, the differences between a neoclassical and a colonial home, and what each part of that particular estate was called. She requested a friend to find the book, and the friend bought her a copy of the same.
