The Background Story of The Water Dancer

The Water Dancer is a novel written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. The book is the author’s first novel that he began writing around the years of 2008 and 2009. Coates said that it all started back at The Atlantic when he was still blogging a lot about Civil Wars. He stated that he got captivated by the world he was inhabiting through the histories.

When Coates finished his first memoir entitled The Beautiful Struggle, he was then encouraged by his agent to write a fiction novel. During those times, Coates was widely researching about the civil war and slavery. He admitted that he was influenced by American novelist and Professor E.L. Doctorow. Coates was amazed at how Doctorow almost reinvented history and how he made history in his own kind of way. Coates also noted how he was moved by Doctorow’s novels Ragtime, Billy Bathgate, and The Waterworks. Coates’ childhood love of comic books and the idea of heroes, in general, was also part of the things that motivated him. While Coates was researching for information about the civil war, he found out that a lot of people that were thought to be heroes were actually straight-up white supremacists. He felt frustrated after learning about it. Coates then worked on it in various degrees for a decade to finish the novel.

According to Coates, he did not expect what happened to him as a fiction writer to just happen. He only would have wanted at first to write profiles of people in print. However, when he started attracting a single level of attention, he found out that people were reacting mostly to what is related to the writing and not the writing itself. He did not enjoy it afterward and left his social media accounts because he does not like intellectual debates. Coates noted that what he likes about writing fiction is that it is not an argumentative piece and that people should read the book first before they could say something about it.

The novel debuted at number one on the New York Times Fiction bestsellers list and on the Combined Print and E-book bestsellers list. American media executive and talk show host Oprah Winfrey selected it as one of the books included for the revival of her Oprah’s Book Club. She even praised it as one of the best books she has ever read in her entire life. Oprah placed it up there in the top 5.
