Kindly Reform Fundamentalism

Kindly let’s reform fundamentalism.

Some say we need a contemporary reformation in the church.  Some say we need a contemporary Martin Luther posting a contemporary 95 Theses.  I agree, so here I present to you my interpretation of how to do this.

I present to you 95 reasons why and how we should reform fundamentalism.

Kindly let’s reform fundamentalism.

Thesis One:

Kindly

Include Inclusivism and

Exclude Exclusivism

We abhor the fundamentalist notion that belief in a fundamentalist God determines whether one goes to heaven or hell.

For a couple of decades now I have disbelieved in the idea that all non-Christians spend an eternity in hell.  I have wondered how could Gandhi be in hell, and according to some theologies, how could Mother Teresa be in hell?

Fundamentalists insist on believing “Jesus is the only way to heaven.” Later an encyclopedia and other sources informed me scholars call this belief Exclusivism.

Fundamentalists praise Billy Graham and C.S. Lewis, yet Adam Hamilton’s book When Christians Get it Wrong noted that Billy Graham and C.S. Lewis (among others like “Mainline Protestants”) have believed in Inclusivism, the idea that “you don’t have to know Jesus to know Jesus”, and to the point, you don’t have to know Jesus to go to heaven.

So let us side with Billy Graham and C.S. Lewis and reform Christianity so it includes inclusivism and excludes exclusivism.

I have had this insight for years that I couldn’t articulate.  It seemed that fundamentalists look and act like druggies and drunks.

Critics of Christianity have referred to fundamentalism as a drug.  As atheist Dan Barker put it in his song Just Say No to Religion, “Religion is a fiction, kinda like a drug addiction.”

My father, a fundamentalist, carried a Bible in one hand and a beer can in the other, so to speak.  Fundamentalism and alcohol addicted my father.  My high school Christian friends said, “A true Christian wouldn’t drink 8 beers a night like he does.”  Answering one of my friends’ inquiry about my parents, I informed him of my dad’s alcoholism and fundamentalism.  He noted, “Usually Fundamentalists don’t drink.”  To that, I add: fundamentalists tend to not drink, while embracing fundamentalism.

At the non-denominational Calvinist church I’ve been attending, I noticed something eerie: a pattern of former drug addicts embracing Calvinism.  I‘ve been encountering what seems like a pattern of former addicts (and sometimes current addicts) becoming Calvinist fundamentalists.

A Salon.com article described a study that demonstrated fundamentalists had “brain damage” in the drug addiction region of the brain that is also responsible for tolerance (e.g. tolerance of homosexuality and other religions).

I hate the toxicity of fundamentalists and druggies!  Sages tell us to guard ourselves against toxic people, so may we defend ourselves against fundamentalists.

Thesis Three:

Kindly Purge Racism

from the Church

I have observed church members act racist.

As I wrote about before, when I worked at Opus 21, my coworkers of color mentioned they perceived a supervisor, an Apostolic Bible Institute (ABI) seminary student, to be racist.

One time she discriminated against me and this black woman friend of mine, so a busybody overheard our discussion and tattled to this supervisor.  Then after consulting with a Puerto Rican coworker about sending a letter to this supervisor’s bosses about this, the Puerto Rican coworker said, “I would support it 100%.” So I reported this supervisor.

Most of the ABI students and I disfellowshipped each other and I reaped the fruit of friendships with people of color.  A coworker opined, “They call themselves Christian and they are racist!”

In high school our family attended a Wesleyan Church.  People remarked that the pastor’s son was racist, as among other things, he made racist slurs.

After attending that church, our family attended an all-Black church, but behind closed doors, my father declared, “I don’t want my daughter dating a black man.”

Kindly let’s purge fundamentalism of racism.
