“Ah! Are you Mr. Pestana?” asked sinhazinha Mota, making a broad gesture of admiration. And then, correcting her familiarity, she added: “Excuse my manner, but... is it really you?”

Good and cheerful widow! With what spirit and diligence she arranged some dancing there, right after dinner, asking Pestana to play a quadrille! She didn't even have to finish her request; Pestana bowed politely and ran to the piano. When the quadrille was over, they had barely rested for ten minutes when the widow ran back to Pestana for a very special treat.
