Gwen almost had a heart attack when she heard that her long time friend Carla is moving away to Singapore. “Really!!” Gwen’s tone went straight up the roof. “No choice kiddo its work” Carla replied. Two of them have been best friend since 7th grade, both knew so much about each other than themselves, favorite ice cream , favorite movies you name it, it’s their little secret but Carla once kissed Gwen. “How long will you be there” Gwen enquired trying to calm her heart. “They haven’t told me yet”, Gwen lowered her eyes, she himself couldn’t understand how it happened but tears began to fall, with a sobbing voice she begged Carla not to go, “You’re so talented you can find a new job, I’ll ask my girls maybe they know something, please don’t go”. Carla started laughing “Oh you, I guess they are sending me there for a year or so besides you will have Dexter to take care of you”. Carla found Dexter when she was driving to home and he jumped in front of her car. “But you love him so much” Gwen reminded, “That’s why I want you to take care of him besides he loves you too”. It was hard for Gwen to process this, she faced some sleepless nights but finally she persuaded herself to conjure some strength. She drove Carla to the airport that rainy day she started crying upon hearing the announcement of the plane departure. Carla hugged and told her not to make this as a goodbye. Carla turned towards Dexter and gently caressing his forehead said not to trouble Gwen. There was something Gwen wanted Carla to know but she chose to keep it secret until they meet next time. “It’s time now”, Carla gets up from the chair, Gwen grabs her hand, they both gaze into each other in that very moment none said a word but each other realized, and with a soft voice Carla assures Gwen that she would come back for her, suddenly Gwen could see everything moving slow, Dexter seems unrest as he pulls towards Carla but Gwen is still holding him tightly. Carla waves at them smiling and vanishes in the crowd; Gwen looks for her but fails. Its 4:30 am Gwen is walking Dexter in the park and she notices two swans swimming she remains still and watches the swans as they play with each others. She signs and looks towards the cloudy sky and says “it’s been a year since I lost you, wish I have never let you go” She sits down and pulls Dexter into her arms. “You miss her don’t you, I miss her too”, she remembers the day Carla kissed her, at first she froze but by the time it was over she felt empty, like something beautiful has ended. Gwen knows the scars of her wounds will never fade away.
