Carter raised his eyebrow at the professor, who sighed in exasperation. He was proudly the most obnoxious person in the Political Science class, and was constantly contradicting the lectures. Still, most of the time he made good points.
That didn't make it any less annoying, and he grinned smugly as Mr. Blair erased the notes on the dry erase board and corrected them. Carter had been arguing about civil rights, and Mr. Blair, being a fairly conservative white man, was full of misinformation and biases.
Ariel stared at him from her seat; she had a vantage point high up in the back of the classroom. She always got to class early to get the best seat, choosing the top row because it made her feel like she was in a movie theater, and she was a shameless people watcher who loved to see what people were doing when they thought nobody was looking. She could see shimmering computer screens and shaking legs, the tops of heads who were bored or engaged, and she could usually tell the difference.
Carter was always jittery, bouncing with nervous energy. It was too bad he was so obnoxious, because he was really handsome. He had sandy blonde hair, styled longer on the top than it was at the sides. He was clean shaven with a smooth face and full lips, and he had startling, intelligent blue eyes that pierced anyone who looked at him. He was quick to point out any outdated material the professor handed out, interrupting their lessons countless times in one session. He was a nightmare to work with in groups, or so she had heard. She hadn't had the chance to work with him yet. From what she gathered, that was fortunate.
He always dressed in jeans and a tight black blazer that never failed but to cling to his lithe but muscular torso. She could see the firm muscles in his arms whenever he raised his hands to speak. Sometimes he didn't even bother and just blurted things out. She had found herself staring at him frequently over the course of her time in the political science class. He definitely made sure to stand out. Sometimes he would be wearing a dress shirt with a neon high underneath it. There were stickers all over his books and binder, and although he never brought a laptop to class she was sure he would have marked that with his personality too.
Mr. Blair definitely was a close minded old man, and more often than not she really agreed with what Carter had to say. Still, he was so long-winded that whenever he began to speak the whole class began to moan and sigh, sometimes throwing crumbled the papers I him and asking him to shut up so that they could get on with their lesson. They obviously didn't actually care about political and social justice, they only cared about getting a good grade in the class. Carter seemed to be the only one who cared about what the content was actually saying. Nobody wanted to be taught by Carter, they were all there to get their money's worth from the professor.
Ariel tilted her pale, oval face onto her hand and sighed. She fingered her jet black hair, fixing her blue eyes on the scene as somebody began slowly tearing a sheet of paper out of a notebook, loud and threatening Carter. Carter seemed not to care and kept his pensive eyes fixed on the professor as he slowly changed the information to an updated format.
“Now if we could just get on with the lecture...” The professor said with a sigh. The boy several rows ahead of Ariel began crumbling up the paper. Ariel's eyes widened as she realized that the boy had fixed something inside the paper, something hard. She couldn't tell what it was, but she knew that if it hit Carter it was going to hurt. She gasped out loud, wanting to prevent Carter from unnecessary pain as the boy released the paper out of his hand before she could open her mouth.
Carter seemed to sense that something was wrong, and looked around just in time to see the ball paper flying at him. He ducked swiftly out of the way and stared in the direction from which the paper came from with a smug grin on his face.
“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to teach you anything," Carter said, his eyes twinkling. “Please feel free to stick your head in the toilet and pretend that nothing happened."
Ariel sat back in her seat, sighing with relief. Carter was going to be fine. Although she wasn't sure why she cared quite so much. She was sure she wouldn't want anybody to be hurt, not even the of noxious boy in the class. But although she hated to admit it, Carter really caught her attention. He was handsome and mysterious, and although the only time she ever saw him or heard him was when he was correcting the professor, she was sure that he had a lot to say and wished that there was enough time to listen.
“Ariel!" Ted said breathlessly, rushing up to her. "I didn't expect to see you here. Wanna dance?"
He had to shout over the loud music that was blaring over the parking lot. Ariel sighed. She didn't expect Ted to be there either. They had been lab partners in a chemistry course and ever since then she was unable to shake him off. He was definitely attracted to her, and never tried to hide the fact. Of course he was handsome in his own way, with his bright blonde hair and pale blue eyes. He had full lips that she was sure would taste good if she kissed them, but the desperate way he continued to pursue her just put her off. She didn't want to date him, and she didn't even want to kiss him.
“Hi Ted," she said, pulling back into her small group of friends. They had dragged her to a rave, it was the first one she had ever been to and her friend Tiffany had insisted that they go together. She was clinging to a bottle of water, terrified that somebody might slip a party drug into her drink. Tiffany laughed at how uptight she was being, it wasn't her first party, but Ariel didn't think that it was uptight. She knew it was just smart. He never knew when something bad would happen to you, and didn't Tiffany know that one in three women would have something bad happen to them? Tiffany just rolled her eyes and pointedly sat her drink on the railing of a broad fence that surrounded the parking lot and reflected the bright colored neon lights as they spun around and illuminated the pulsating bodies.
“Actually, she is with us," Tiffany said, her blonde curls bobbing as she stepped in front of Ted. She knew about Ariel's predicament, and like a good friend was willing to intervene and protect her from any awkward unwanted social attention. Ted's face fell but he nodded understandingly.
“All right," Ted said. “Well have fun. I know the DJ. He's pretty cool."
“I'm sure he is," Tiffany said sweetly, weeding Ariel and her group of friends away from him. His gaze lingered on Ariel, and she squirmed, ducking in front of Tiffany..
“You know, you should probably just be straightforward with him and tell him that you're not interested," Tiffany said with a sigh. “Otherwise I don't think that he will ever leave you alone. Is that what you want?”
“Of course that isn't what I want," Ariel said with a sigh. “I guess I just feel sorry for him."
