CHAPTER 1 : Birth of a baby girl

It was probably the month of December, people were wrapped in warm woolen Shawls and Mrs. Amrita Pandey opens her eyes as soon as she hears a baby voice just near her ears in the bed of Swaroop Rani Nehru hospital, UP. She then realizes that the delivery was successful and she gave out a life from a life. It was the first time she acquired the ultimate happiness of motherhood, tears of joy rolled down her fair cheeks. She could barely see some pieces of Nutri choice thin biscuits, some cut pieces of apple and a bottle of water lying in the stool near her bed and a nurse refilling her saline bottle. She was expecting the entire family to be surrounding her while she opens her eyes. She kissed the forehead of her baby and kept on staring its face for she was overwhelmed with happiness of becoming a mother for the first time. The nurse was done with her work and before leaving the room, she said,

“Congratulations Mrs. Pandey, you are gifted with such an adorable baby girl."

Mrs. Pandey suddenly retained consciousness and asked the nurse,

“Nurse, is it really a girl? And…and where are my husband and my family?"

"Yes madam, look how beautiful she is, she is of course a girl. Wait, I am sending them in.    They are out for eating perhaps." - The nurse smiled and left the room.

It took less than a second for Mrs. Pandey to know the reason of such ignorance shown by her husband and his family. They were desperately waiting to welcome a baby boy and they left no stone unturned to make that happen, starting from praying day & night to providing her all necessary comfort. Unfortunately they failed to gain what they wished and Mrs. Pandey considered herself to be the reason of their failure. These thoughts brought unexplainable fear and sadness to Mrs. Pandey. She cried, but this time it was not the tears of joy but tears filled with fear and sadness. She was left with no further happiness as she already knew that the child is going to acquire the same hardships that she had throughout her life.

All of a sudden, Mr. Pandey, with a pair of round spectacle, a white sweater and a pair of old looking trousers with some medicines wrapped in a newspaper, entered the room. He silently asked his wife,

"Why these tears?”

She wiped her tears and said,

"Sorry, even I wanted a boy. Will your parents talk to me even after this? I never wanted to make them sad, all my fault. Will you love me even after this?"

“Just forget it, have this one." Mr. Pandey said, offering her a capsule and a glass of water.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Pandey’s mother, her elder sister and her 4 years old nephew, Sonu entered the room.

"Mummy, look how little its hands are! Oh my god, its nose is even smaller than mine “Sonu giggled and said.

Mrs. Pandey was not hearing any voice and kept on looking at her husband's face for a while. Her mother and sister tried to console her and make her know that it was not at all her fault for not giving birth to a son.

"See Amru, things will be alright. It will take time but this cute soul will definitely melt their hearts. Have patience and take care." Her elder sister with all her grace spoke to her.

Conversations kept on proceeding, later joined by Mrs. Pandey's in laws and ended with their naps.

Mrs. Pandey with her baby was discharged after a day or two and they reached home safe.

Weeks passed. Relatives and neighbors kept on visiting their home to see the baby, named Danika. A statement that was commonly heard from most of the visitors was,

"Amrita, you have given birth to an angel. She is extremely beautiful but what to do, it was not in your hands. Giving birth to a boy is something not everyone is blessed with."

Pinching words like these put Mrs. Amrita Pandey into a pit of frustration. Additionally, her mother in law was not even talking to her like before. The entire family began to show a sudden hatred which was not easy for Mrs. Pandey to tolerate.

Months passed and it was time for little Danika to include rice in her diet apart from breast milk and cerelac. Danika reached 8 months and now she could sit, crawl, move her hands & legs like a doll and she speaks Spanish too. Yeah! Of course not precisely Spanish but she uttered babbling words that were hard to understand even by the polyglots. With those bright big eyes, pink little lips, fair fuller cheeks and soft brown hair, she looked not less an adorable doll. She was extremely cute, not just with her magical appearance but also with her activities. She deserved adequate love but unfortunately she was deprived of it. She was deprived of everything that babies of her age were provided with. Her grandmother hardly took her in lap for 3-4 times during those 8 months, her mother Mrs. Pandey started becoming inattentive towards her and her father was not able to consider the child as his own as he was confident regarding his capability of creating a boy. Though middle class, the family used to follow a ritual of celebrating "Annaprasana"(the first rice eating ceremony of the child) in a massive way with great feast, band baja, thousands of guests, stunning decoratives and what not. Though these sounds satisfying but the racist family kept these celebration confined only to their sons' annaprasana ceremonies and little Danika was of course not a baby boy and this made her deprived of the blessings from thousand guests.

With only 8-10 people from their neighborhood, some sweets and namkins, the inevitable puja essentials and a pandit ji, the ceremony was concluded.

It was 9:00 pm and Mrs. Pandey's phone vibrated displaying "Ma calling...”

"Yes mom...” - Said Mrs. Pandey, picking up the call.

The voice from the other side of the phone rudely spoke

"Got to know it from Manoj that it was Danika's annaprasana today. May I know why we were not called when thousands of guests were invited? Your in-laws are famous for celebrating this event so large but they forgot their son's in-laws?"

Mrs. Pandey with a tone of tiredness replied,

"I think you forgot, those were the ceremonies of Deepu, Bablu, Chotu, Pintu, Raghab, and Pappu. Baby girls' annaprasana ceremonies are not organized with such heaviness. Manoj is my brother and so we had no choice rather than inviting him. If not he, then who would feed her the first bite? Apart from him, only a few neighbors were called for tea and snacks. That's it mom, what else a girl child needs? And anyway, since her birth, I am left with no love and affection from my family."

"Amrita, she is your child. I feel guilty for fixing your marriage with such a family who discriminates even among babies. Anyway, sleep well. Goodnight."

Mrs. Pandey put down the phone and started serving dinner to the family.
