Based on a story by Sierra Wolf.
“Hey, honey, do you think I should pack some swimming trunks or something?” Lorenzo asks while I’m busy trying to sort our suitcases for the trip. He keeps bugging me about wanting to go to the beach, but no matter how many times I tell my fiancé this, he doesn’t seem to get that Salem isn’t anywhere near the pleasant swimming coast.
“No, I don’t think you need to,” I say, pausing to check that my old Puritan black dress was packed. We’re going to visit my family, and it’s a big deal—this is the first time they’ve allowed me to bring Lorenzo with me to see them, and given that we’re going to be married before the end of the year, I’m both excited and apprehensive.
After all, when your family is one of the oldest, most conservative coven of witches in North America, you don’t really expect them to be cool about their eldest daughter marrying a werewolf.
At first, when we began dating, I tried to soften the blow to my family by telling them that Lorenzo wasn’t like other werewolves. He’s also a stockbroker, so he’s not exactly the flea-bitten, living-in-a-ditch-in-the-woods kind of guy. Later, my best friend Gabrielle scolded me, saying that resorting to the “he’s not like other werewolves” tactic was pretty shame-faced racism.
So I decided to let them ease into the idea of us being together. Lorenzo’s not exactly the pack alpha—he’s handsome, he’s fashionable, but he could afford to spend a bit more time in the gym, and he’s not exactly super fond of long walks in the forest... unless he has to, come the middle of the month.
“Are you nervous? About meeting my family?” I blurt out to Lorenzo.
He shrugs, which is more than he’s really said about the subject. “I guess it’s not really a big deal for me, baby. If it makes you happy, then I’ll be the most charming gentlemen I can possibly be. If that’s not good enough for them, I’ll shave my arm fuzz or something. Tone down the facial hair. Put down the toilet seat. Whatever you want.”
“Aw, you’re too sweet,” I say, puckering my lips to blow him a kiss. The big ol’ lunk is just standing there picking out elastic shorts. I’ve told him in the past I hated that he had to wear them—they look a little too Incredible Hulk for me.
I guess I asked him if he’s nervous because I’m the one who actually is. My dad and mom have seen pictures of us, and every so often I know my sisters like to go through my Instagram—peppered with cheesy couple photos, pretty much the only thing I post—but I’ve never really had a chance to sit down with them and talk about it. I don’t know how they actually feel about our relationship.
I think the main thing here is that I don’t really care. I love my werewolf, fur and all, and if my family can’t live with that, I guess they’ll just have to keep their objections to themselves.
“You picked out your clothes yet? I’ll pack them in the suitcase,” I say, extending a hand in my fiancé’s direction.
“Nooooope,” he surprises me [...]
