Chapter 1

Elemental Sages: the wrath of demons Chapter one

It was just a little after three when the school came out, the stench of the high school cafeteria food still filled the air and the jocks were starting their football practice on the fields, cheerleaders still cheering in the school gym. It was just turning autumn and the leaves were all over the school – the town was quite this time of the year and with the mines being closed and people having to move because they’d lost their jobs. In the shadows of the school corridors lurked a gang of bullies busy pushing a boy around, this boy was different in more ways than one and that’s what started the bulling, the fear of something different. This boy was usually picked on but never like this because he was an orphan with scars and no friends the bullies saw him as easy prey- the bullies seemed cold and empty inside, the left over children that had to stay because their families were too poor to move away. Luke was pushed against the cold steel locker by the biggest of the group of bullies – his grip on Luke’s head was firm as he smashed him against the locker again, for some reason they felt it fun to pick on the lonely orphan boy. Luke felt the cold steel against his back but he knew he couldn’t match them in any way.

“Please let me go, I just want to get home, I didn’t do anything so please.” Luke pleaded, this wasn’t the first time he’d been picked on but this time these guys looked like they wanted to do more than just simply bully Luke and since he was another kid in the system nobody would notice if one kid mysteriously vanished out of the system. “Well, well, well now why would we put a freak monster faced idiot like yourself back in society to scare the world when we could just beat you to an inch of your life then shove you into a locker where you can’t scare anyone ever again?” Josh the leader of the bulldog gang said. He was the typical bully type that had no respect for anyone with more IQ points than he had, he was also quite pudgy and had a few pimples on his forehead and his hair was starting to vanish along the sides Luke thought to himself as he spat out some blood. “Put him in locker 399, boys, no one will ever find him there.” Luke started crying he felt helpless and afraid. “Please I didn’t do anything I just want to go home.” Luke pleaded but they didn’t want to listen, his spirit was crushed because this wasn’t a joke these guys meant business. “Home! You don’t have one, orphans like you don’t deserve to live, and that’s why I’m doing the whole pine view falls a favour by putting you in a locker where you won’t ever escape from.” Josh said with a smug smile on his face…Josh ran his fingers over Luke’s scars and yelled “Look guys we’ve found some of Frankenstein’s parts!” as he scratched at it. The one scar ran from his left ear down to his mouth covering his cheek and ear and the other one on his right covered his eye and ran down to his cheekbone, they were his birth marks so to say but to the bullies this made him different in a bad way and put a target on Luke’s back – he managed to free himself from the brute’s grip but his escape was short lived when Josh punched him in the face. “Please I promise I won’t ever come back to school, I’ll transfer if I have to just please let me go.” Luke pleaded as his mouth filled with the taste of blood. Luke tried his best but Josh started laughing and said, “Why take the chance of another school’s bully in another town to take the credit for slaying the creature...” those words broke Luke and he felt too hurt to fight back. He was the outsider in school and in life so instead if fighting he just went with it.They opened the locker right next to the basement door but before they shoved him into the locker josh and his gang started to beat with a tire iron, Luke felt sharp stings inside from one of the bullies kicking him, another pulled his head up by his hair and punched him in the face repeatedly, but Josh did the worst, after he hit Luke with the tire iron he took a knife and jabbed it into Luke’s stomach, the pain surged through him and made him briefly pass out leaving him hurt and bleeding from the mouth and stomach with some hurt ribs and sore face, Luke felt a relief once they shoved him into the locker, his suffering on this world would now come to an end. “OK boys tomorrow after school if he isn’t dead yet we can kill him.” Josh said and the gang just laughed. They felt a sick sense of pride for doing that. The bulldog gang walked out of the school as if nothing had happened leaving Luke to bleed out in an abandoned locker.

I was out cold but felt sick mentally and hurt physically there in the locker; my ribs ached, my one eye was swollen shut and I could feel the blood dripping from the stab wound – it was a terrible way to leave this world and to top it off my mouth was full of blood which made breathing harder- the cramped locker space didn’t make moving easy and the cold steel quickly heated to body temperature which made it feel even more uncomfortable. I drifted from consciousness to unconscious but the pain of what they had done stuck with me even while I was out cold but the worst thing was that they are coming back to finish the job if I manage to survive which I doubted because at the rate I’m losing blood it would only be a matter of hours before it would be over for me. The adrenaline started to kick I became more aware of my surroundings and what had happened; I felt like life was worthless and although I had a bad day tomorrow might be better because my pain would be gone but I had no energy even though adrenaline was running through me. I was too tired to get out or even open my eyes, I couldn’t move because of the pain. Every few minutes when I took a deep breath my ribs would feel as if someone was busy stepping on it and I inhaled more blood than air. I managed to put some pressure on my stab wound but that didn’t help much for the pain I was in and it didn’t allow for much strength to be left in my body.I was slowly fading away the pain so intense and my breath hard to come by. I faded off and saw a bright light – but it was shortly lived when I heard something outside the locker. It was just past midnight when a displeasing sound woke me up and gave me goose bumps. Never in my life have I heard anything that horrifying. I looked through the holes in the locker and saw a strange figure with the head of a dog, body of a lion, and the tail of a scorpion with razor sharp claws and a very nasty smell that almost made me puke. I froze; in my mind I thought that this was the end, as if my life wasn’t bad enough, now fate wanted me dead by sending a monster to probably eat my insides and leaving the rest of me to rot in a ditch somewhere.Sweat started dripping down my eyebrow as I heard the creature circle the room a second time now I was afraid, my entire body started to tremble as the creature passed my locker yet again. It started to rip off the locker doors, and sounded very agitated that it couldn’t find whatever or whoever it was looking for. All I could hear was the sound of steel being sliced. After a while the creature’s shadow appeared in front of my locker and I saw the claws ripping at the door and heard the sound of claws starting to slash my door open, very slowly unlike the other doors that where just yanked off, this creature wanted me and it knew I was in the locker; it didn’t just want to kill me but also play with its food was the first thought that ran through my head once I saw how the creature slowly sliced the locker door. Fear’s icy grip had a hold over my heart, I froze; a knot started to form in my throat and I struggled to breath. My body started to shake and the stab wound started to burn as fear ran through my body. The metal door folded like a blank piece of paper when the creature’s claws cut through it like a hot knife through butter. For a brief second I stared at the creature before it gave out a devilish howl, its face was full of scars and the sight of the creature could bring anyone close to deaths door.I snapped out of my fear when I heard the creatures howl and I knew that I had to escape or die and I didn’t like the second choice, the adrenaline in my body started to pump in overdrive and I completely forgot about the pain inflicted on my body. I positioned myself just right so once the locker door was totally broken I jumped out and tackled the creature hard against the wall, causing it to bump its head against the marble statue in the wall casing causing the beast faint. I ran for the exit, at first I limped but after a few steps and a ton of adrenaline my body felt completely healed so I ran like a normal person without limping; never in my life had I run this fast and yet felt like I didn’t make any progress getting to the door leading out of the building, but when I got out of the building and past the statue in the middle of the quad a whole pack of those creatures appeared out of the darkness; their eyes glowing like lanterns but filled with pure red darkness or rage I couldn’t tell exactly but I knew that they weren’t a friendly breed. They weren’t as big as the one in the school, so I figured if they come at me one by one I’d have a chance, a small one but still the chance was there; I felt as if fate wanted me to be eaten but I didn’t like what fate had planned for me. This was turning out to be truly ironic… the monster boy eaten by monsters… They moved closer and I started to retreat back into the school, the thought of the first creature in the school totally slipped my mind but as I started retreating slowly up the steps again towards the school I heard the creature inside howl again and I knew that it was now a fight or die situation and I was tired of running, if I could kill only one of these monsters I would die knowing I had the courage to stand up against a bully. I felt the breath of the big one from inside breathing down my neck; I ran down the steps to the middle of the quad. The smaller one’s came a few steps closer and started to circle me. The bigger one jumped into the circle and tried to show dominance over me. I wasn’t going to be eaten by a creature… not tonight. I felt scared but angry and it started to manifest in a strange way.Something inside of me snapped and I couldn’t take how I was being treated. “I’m not running anymore because I’m not afraid of bullies anymore so do your worst!” I shouted not thinking of the implications of my words. The monster gave out another howl even louder than before. He stood ready to attack and rip the flesh from my bones; sinking those big teeth inside of me was probably the only thing it could think of. The monster jumped and I quickly sidestepped and rolled out of the way but the monster quickly caught on; the creature got angry and grew in size, his front claws suddenly turned into spear like tips. This creature was clearly built for battle unlike me because i only weigh 67 kg and the only muscle I had at that point was my brain not that it helped me most of the time in school. The monster jumped up once more but vanished into the darkness, I looked side ways to see where the monster went and before I knew it the creature came down on me forcing me to the ground. The intense weight of the creature was too much for me to handle. I was pinned; my arms spread out and stuck under the creatures claws which somehow now fused with the cement. I was in pain as the creatures entire weight was pressing down to keep me on the ground and its spear-like claws started to scratch open the skin on my arms. I screamed out in pain but to no avail the fear had sent my vocal cords running and I was in terrible pain. The adrenaline wore off so the burning pain from my stomach wound started to flare up again and the creature seemed to enjoy toying with me.The monster gave out one loud devilish howl and the wind started to get wild and for a split second the ground trembled as a blue portal opened and a human like monster stepped out. The monster was rather tall with dark wings and horns. He wore a leather spiked jacket and was armoured up to take on anything that came his way. I saw swords on his back and blades on his legs, this creature was designed to kill anything on site and that frightened me because what if I were to die at the hands of this creature, but then my mind got another thought, maybe this creature came to help me.He stepped forward and beat the monster to the ground. I started to breath normally again and the fear had fled for a while. “No boy. Be afraid I’ll deal with you in a minute let me just take care of my pet.” The creature said with a rusty voice that sounded like an old man on a ventilator. It scared me; the fact that he could listen to my heart beat and smells my fear. He started beating all the dogs and yelled, “I ask you one thing, get me a Sage, but no you come to the human world for a snack, it doesn’t work like that!” He raised his hand and a ball of darkness shot out taking out all of his “pets” with one blast. He turned towards me and picked me up with his one hand and with the other one he started to power up to do that dark energy blast he did with his pets. “Well now, I wish they hadn’t found you because then you could have seen the light of a new day again but since you’ve seen so much now death is the only option.” I got angry something deep inside me started to burn its way up and instead of fighting it I just let go. Everybody wanted to eat or kill me and I was sick of it, a burning rage emerged from the deepest part of me and took control. I gripped the monster by the neck and with my other arm shot a ball of fire down his throat; he dropped me and I witnessed him slowly turn to ash. I enjoyed the rage that flowed through me and for the first time I felt in control but I noticed my stomach wasn’t so sore anymore. I looked down and saw that the stab wound was completely healed. The night seemed never ending. It felt as if the world was totally against me and I was sick of it, I never did anything to anybody yet I always get hurt. Darkness took a hold of my body and I gave in just to feel some relief from the pain life gave me.The rage had fully taken over and I went on a full out rampage on the town blowing every car in sight sky high and setting every tree on fire. I floated on a fire cloud till I was in a clearing in the woods where I yelled up into the air and dragon’s fire came out of my mouth for as long as I yelled. When the rage was mostly gone I conjured up another fire cloud to take out the last of my rage on the bullies that tried to kill me earlier that day. If they wanted me dead I wanted them dead… it was flawed logic but my heart and mind were controlled by darkness and I had no choice but to follow. I flew in the direction of their hide out and the only thought that ran through my head was “Do to them what they wanted to do to you”. And that thought fuelled my rage but when I flew over the hospital the sound of a woman being mugged in the back ally caught my attention. It was a mother and her baby being held at gunpoint for her purse. The sight of a young woman about to be shot and child left to be an orphan sparked my rage once more because I knew how that felt, my mother died when I was five and my father was absent since birth, so I swooped down and walked towards the mugger.“If you don’t leave her alone I swear you will not live to see the light of a new day”. The mugger laughed and said, “Why be afraid of a boy with scars trying to be a hero”. I immediately I formed a ball of fire and when he saw it not even a fast car could match the speed he was running.“You and your child are safe now,” I said before walking away, she just stood there not running just staring at me and smiling. I couldn’t understand why this woman wasn’t running when she saw me but I didn’t argue… she seemed nice.“Thank you.” her soft voice whispered as I walked away.I cooled down and walked to a nearby cave wondering what these powers are and if I could ever use it again when I’m not in an all-out rage. All these questions ran around in my head and soon I found myself lost in the maze of my own mind. The new sun broke through the darkness and I knew it was time to pack up and find a new place to stay because I can’t go back to the shelter and I can’t stay in the woods any longer.
