Title:Emergency Room of Hearts:

Chaos of Emotions

Author: Johanna Hagedorn

Biography:

Johanna Hagedorn was born in 1982 in a small town in the Black Forest and grew up surrounded by dense forests and picturesque villages. At an early age she developed a passion for observing and telling everyday stories that surrounded her in her life. After graduating from high school, she trained as a nurse and worked for several years in a large hospital.

During this time, she learned not only about the challenges and joys of everyday medical practice, but also about the unique fates of the people she met. Inspired by these experiences, she began to write stories that show life in all its diversity of love, humor, pain and hope.

Chapter 1: Return to Chaos Lena took a deep breath as she entered the hospital. The familiar smells of disinfectants and hospital corridors filled her nose, and she immediately felt the typical tingling in her stomach. It was good to be back. But at the same time, she knew that the peace of the last few days would not last long. The emergency room was never a place for boredom, and today, too, she expected a day full of action.

"Lena, you're still alive!" her colleague Sophie called as she closed the sliding door of the emergency room behind her. Sophie was one of the few people who had really gotten close to Lena in the last few months. They had laughed together, cried together and cheered each other up as they fought through the hectic shifts.

"How are you?" Lena asked as she took off her jacket and adjusted her hair. "Oh, it's fine. No boring cases, but also no really dramatic ones, you know? "What awaits you is not for the faint-hearted," Sophie replied with a grin. "But you also went on holiday once, so..."She raised an eyebrow. "I really hoped that things would calm down a bit, but I know I'm deluding myself," said Lena. She was back, and with her came the endless challenges of everyday hospital life. Before Sophie could reply, Marc, the doctor on duty, stormed past them. "Lena, you're back. Perfect! We have a small problem here." His voice was unmistakable. Lena always felt a little more pressure when she was near him. Not only because of his authoritarian nature, but also because their complicated relationship between the two of them had not yet been fully resolved. The last few months had only increased their tensions. “What’s wrong?” Lena asked, trying to control her emotions.

"A mass accident on the highway. "We have to prepare everything, patients are on the way," he explained as he continued towards the treatment rooms. "Lena, you take the patient flow, Sophie, you take care of the surgical preparations. We need everything we can get."

Lena nodded, her heart beating faster. She had experienced all of this hundreds of times, but the adrenaline rush of the emergency room always captivated her in new ways. "I accept that, Marc," she called after him and made her way to the patient files. They could feel his eyes following her, but she avoided turning around. They knew she had to concentrate on the work, not on what was between them.

Sophie quickly understood the situation and also set off. When Lena sat down again with her file, she felt the familiar nervousness. The emergency room was the place where people had to give everything, and today would be no different.

"I heard Dr. Berg is coming today too," Sophie whispered as she passed Lena. "He's new here, right?"

Lena looked up and nodded. "Yes, a new surgeon. I don't know what to think of him yet."

“Oh, I’m excited,” said Sophie, grinning. “Maybe he’s an excitingcase that we can investigate." Lena tried to put aside thoughts of her new colleague as the first team member arrived with the first patient. They need all their concentration to triage the patients correctly and prepare them for the next treatments. Marc suddenly appears again and accompanies another patient. This time he was not alone, but had a young doctor with him who was new to the clinic. He introduced himself as Dr. Felix Berg and politely shook Lena's hand.

"Dr. Hagedorn," he said with a charming smile, "it is a pleasure to work with you." Lena felt a slight shock as she shook the new doctor's hand. He was tall, had striking facial features and seemed likeable at first glance -but she wasn't sure what to think of him. Especially because she knew that Marc always reacted a little jealously when it came to other men around them. “Likewise, Dr. Berg,” they answered briefly andthen quickly went to the patients who required their attention. Felix was a confident doctor, and Lena liked his calm, matter-of-fact manner. But the day quickly picked up speed as more and more patients came to the emergency room. There was a constant coming and going, a relentless stream of emergencies that all needed to be treated quickly.

“How did you spend your vacation?” Marc asked later, when she finally had a moment of peace and was enjoying a cup of coffee in the break room.

"Good, thank you," Lena replied without looking him in the eye. "I just need a break." She didn't want to talk about the things that were bothering her after the time she spent with him and the emotional strain she had been under recently. "I was thinking we could go out to dinner tonight. Just the two of us," Marc said quietly. It was an offer she could take, but Lena was unsure if she was ready to get back into that dynamic.

“Let’s discuss this later,” she said, without really answering his question. SheShe didn't want to go into the complicated feelings that were coming up inside her. She just wasn't ready yet. The rest of the day passed at a hectic pace. There was no time for interpersonal interaction, just the people who came to the emergency room and the quick decisions that had to be made. But even in the midst of the chaos, Lena kept feeling Marc's gaze and couldn't quite stop her thoughts from wandering to him. When the day ended, she was exhausted, but the feeling of fulfillment that only this job brought was noticeable. Daily life in the hospital was hard, but it pushed her to her limits again and again - and that was exactly what she needed. They left the building with a feeling of unease that she couldn't shake. The chaos was back, but with it the questions that still lingered in her heart.

Chapter 2: The New Guy on the Station The next morning, the emergency room was quieter, at least by the standards of everyday hospital life. Lena had finished her first night shift after her return and felt surprisingly awake despite her tiredness. But she knew that she had to prepare herself for a challenge: her new colleague, Dr. Felix Berg. His presence yesterday had been too short to get a clear picture of him, but today he would have to prove himself on the ward. When Lena went into the changing room, she met Sophie, who was just tying her hair into a loose bun. "Well, are you ready for our new star surgeons?" Sophie asked with a broad grin.

Lena rolled her eyes. "I barely spoke to him yesterday. But he seemed... well, confident."

"Confident?" Sophie repeated, raising an eyebrow. "I'd say he looks like he's straight out of a hospital drama. If he's half as charming as he looks, we're in for a treat." Lena laughed quietly as she pulled on her coat. "But being charming won't get us anywhere here." Let's see if he's got anything going for him."

She had barely left the changing room when Felix actually appeared. He was standing in front of the reception desk, perfectly dressed in a freshly ironed coat, his dark hair neatly styled. He stood erect, his hands casually in his pockets as he had a friendly conversation with one of the administrative staff. "Morning," he said when he noticed Lena and Sophie. His smile was open, almost too charming, Lena thought. "Good morning," she replied politely. "Are you ready for the next rush?"

"Always," Felix replied with a slight wink. "I hope you don't mind if I still have to get used to it a bit. But I promise, I learn quickly."

"We'll see about that," Lena said and led him to the treatment rooms. "We have our own way of doing things here. It's not always textbook, but it works."

“I like challenges,” Felix answered calmly. While Lena showed him the station, she watched him closely. He seemed attentive, asked the right questions and showed interest in the procedures. But she couldn't completely rule out that his relaxed manner also concealed a certain arrogance. The first test didn't take long to arrive. A young woman was admitted with severe abdominal pain, which quickly turned out to be a potential ruptured appendix. Felix was the surgeon on duty and had to decide immediately whether an emergency surgical team should be deployed.

“What do you mean?” Lena asked as they examined the patient together. Felix frowned, his gaze wandering over the vital signs and the ultrasound results. "The appendix is inflamed, but the inflammation levels are not extremely high. We could observe for a few more hours, but honestly... I wouldn't wait. The risk is too high." Lena nodded approvingly. "I agree. I'll call the team together."

The operation went smoothly, but it was Felix's calmness and precision that impressed Lena. He was focused, his instructions clear and direct, and he seemed to become more confident with each decision. When the operation ended the war, he looked at Lena and Sophie, who had been waiting in the preparation room.

"Done," he said with a satisfied smile. "I hope I've done reasonably well?"

“For now,” Lena replied with a slight smile. "Wow," Sophie murmured later when Felix had left the room. "He's really got something going for him. But I bet he knows it very well."

"Definitely," said Lena. "But as long as he does his job, I can live with it." The rest of the day went by without any major difficulties. But Felix managed to keep talking to the other colleagues and getting involved. It was obvious that he wanted to quickly secure a place in the team – which waswas well received by some but aroused skepticism among others.

In the evening, as the shift was coming to an end, Lena met Felix again in the hallway. He was holding a coffee in his hand and offered her a second cup. “Peace?” he asked with a mischievous smile. “I didn’t know we were at war,” Lena replied, taking the coffee.

"You never know," said Felix. "Sometimes you feel like you have to fight for your place in a new environment. But I hope I'm making a good impression so far."

Lena took a sip and nodded. "You are competent, that is the most important thing. The rest will come naturally."

Felix looked at her thoughtfully for a moment. "Thank you. That means a lot to me. And... if I ever make a mistake, please let me know." “You can count on that,” Lena said dryly, but she felt that her initial skepticism was slowly fading. When she left the clinic later, she thought about Felix. It was too early to really judge him, but something about him made her curious. Maybe it was actually more than just a charming smile. But whether that was good for the dynamics of the team remained to be seen.

Chapter 3: Old Fire

The morning began hectically. The shift had barely started when a call from the control center brought the emergency room into action. A motorcycle accident on the country road, the driver seriously injured, probably with multiple fractures. Lena felt the adrenaline pulsing in her veins as she put on her gloves and made preparations with Marc. "We need trauma kits one and two ready," Marc called as he wrote down the details of the call. Lena nodded and hurried to the treatment room. It was routine, but every accident brought a new challenge. A few minutes later, the paramedics pushed the patient into the emergency room. Lena saw the stretcher and the blood-stained helmet first before her gaze fell on the injured man's face. She paused. Her hand unconsciously clutched the tragedy when she recognized who was lying there. Philipp. Her ex-boyfriend.

“Is everything okay?” Sophie had noticed her reaction and looked at her worriedly. “Yes,” Lena said hastily, her voice aa little too high. "I... I'll take care of him." She glanced briefly at Marc, who was alert but didn't say anything. Instead, he turned to the paramedic who was giving the report. "Male, 32 years old, motorcycle accident with side impact against a guardrail. Probable fractures in the left leg and left shoulder. No obvious internal injuries, but we need a CT scan to be sure."

Lena took a deep breath and concentrated. "Philipp, can you hear me?" she asked as she checked his pulse and took his vital signs. His eyelids fluttered before he slowly opened them. "Lena?" His voice was weak, but the shock in his eyes was obvious. "What are you doing here?"

"I work here," she said calmly as she felt his chest to check for possible broken ribs. "You had an accident. We're taking care of you."

"Of course... you," he murmured, grimacing in pain.

“Hold still,” she said strongly, herProfessionalism covered the chaos raging inside her. "I'm going to help you now, but you have to stay calm, okay?"

Philipp nodded weakly. In the meantime, Marc had taken over the examination and instructed Lena to prepare the CT scan. They were grateful that he didn't ask.

In the CT room, it was still quiet, except for the slightest noise from the machine. Lena checked the screens while she waited for the images to be ready. Philipp watched her out of the corner of his eye.

“It was a long time ago,” he finally said. “Yes, three years,” she replied without looking up from the monitors. “I heard you’re back in town,” he continued. "And I never thought I would see you again in tragedy." Her voice sounded colder than she had intended, and she immediately regretted it. Philipp was silent, but his eyes searched for her face. "I'm sorry about how things went back then," he finally said quietly. Lena paused and looked at him. "Now is not the right time, Philipp."
