Title:Emergency Room of Hearts:

Playing with Fire

Author: Johanna Hagedorn

Biography:

Johanna Hagedorn was born in 1982 in a

small town in the Black Forest and grew up surrounded by dense forests and picturesque villages. At an early age she developed a

passion for observing and telling everyday stories that surrounded her in her life. After graduating from high school, she trained as a nurse and worked for several years in a large hospital.

During this time, she not only learned about the challenges and joys of everyday medical practice, but also about the unique fates of

the people she met. Inspired by these experiences, she began to write stories that portray life in all its diversity of love, humor, pain andshow hope.

Chapter 1: New Faces, New Hearts

The emergency room was buzzing like a beehive. A Monday morning, with the usual madness of broken bones, feverish children and exhausted parents. Lena looked at the

clock. It was only nine and she already felt like the day would never end. Sophie pushed a stack of patient files onto the counter and

sighed. "If this keeps up, we'll soon need an emergency room ourselves." Lena smiled briefly, but her thoughts were wandering. Today was the first day for the

new senior doctor. She had only read the name in passing on an email: Dr. Jakob Winter. However, the rumors about him had

been making the rounds for a long time. Young, successful, with a penchant for unconventional methods - and apparently a bit too charming for his own benefit.

The glass door opens with a quiet hiss, and all eyes magically wander to the figure that entered. Jakob Winter was tall, slim and movedwith a confidence that instantly

dampened the hectic energy of the emergency room. His dark hair was casually combed back, his chin was adorned with a

light stubble, and his ice-blue eyes seemed both curious and alert. “Good morning, everyone!” His voice was deep, warm, and carried a hint of nonchalance that immediately gave him an aura of aloofness.

Sophie, who was leafing through a file, almost dropped the stack. "That's the new senior doctor? Please tell me he stumbled out of some medical drama."

Lena snorted quietly. "Concentrate, Sophie." Jakob walked towards the central station and stopped in front of Lena, who was sorting

blood collection tubes in a compartment. He held out his hand to her. "Dr. Lena Hoffmann, right? I've heard a lot about you."

Lena raised an eyebrow as she shook his hand. "Oh, really? Then I hopeI think it was only good.”

Jakob grinned. "That depends on how you

define 'good.' But yes, I heard that you are the one who holds everything together here."

"I do what I can," Lena Knapp contradicted. Her skepticism towards new colleagues did

not immediately allow her to be won over by his charm. "I'm looking forward to working with you," said Jakob before addressing the rest of the team. "And I'm looking forward to all the cases that await me. If anyone has a problem with the way I work, please tell me directly - I rarely bite."

A quiet laughter goes through the rows.

Lukas, the keeper, murmurs quietly to Carla: "Rarely? "He looks as if he is just waiting for fresh prey."

Carla smiled, but her eyes followed Jakob attentively. "Um, that was. Do you know what I mean?"

"Yes," replied Lukas. "An ego that doesn't fit in the elevator."

The next hour flew by. Jakob threw himself into his work immediately, impressing

everyone with a mixture of self-confidence and charm. He treated patients quickly, made precise diagnoses and made even the most nervous relatives smile with just a few words.

As Lena watched him, she couldn't help but feel a little admiration. He knew what he was doing, that was obvious. But his lightness irritated her. The emergency room was no place for casual jokes and charming games. During the lunch break, Jakob unexpectedly sat down with Lena and Sophie in the break room. "So, how do you like the first impression?" he asked as he bit into his sandwich.

Sophie, who still blushed a little when he looked at her, cleared her throat. "You seem... interesting."

"Interesting? "That sounds suspicious," replied Jakob with a mischievous grin. Lena put down her fork. “Interesting is

apolite way of saying 'we don't know yet whether we like you'." Jakob laughed. "That's fair. But give me a week. By Friday at the latest, I'll bring you all coffee and we'll be best friends." “Coffee is a good start,” Lena murmured, but couldn’t suppress a smile.

When the afternoon came, everyone agreed: Dr. Jakob Winter was an exceptional doctor. But whether he would fit into the well-established team was another question.

Lena knew that this man was more than he seemed at first glance. And she was determined to look behind his facade -whether he wanted to or not.

Chapter 2: A Shocking Introduction

The emergency room was in full operation when Jakob Winter made his presence felt again. His confident demeanor had already been a topic of conversation for many, and

today was no exception. While the usual stream of patients streamed through the clinic, Jakob prepared the first start of the day with his unconventional manner. "We do things differently here," he announced, leaning over a patient form and frowning. "The patient doesn't need a CT

scan, at least not right away. A thorough examination is enough to determine whether it really is a fracture."

Lena stopped, her hands full of files. "Dr. Winter, protocol calls for a CT scan in cases like this. We're not risking anything." Jakob turned to her, his eyes flashing with

determination. "I'm not risking anything either, Dr. Hoffmann. But we're not wasting time or resources if it's not necessary. Trust me."

The team held their breath. Lena and Jakob faced each other like two competitors in a boxing ring. Sophie, who was sorting a blood sample, whispered quietly to Felix: "He may be good, but he has a tendency to be arrogant." Felix shrugged. "He's always been right so far. Maybe we should give him a chance."

Lena finally raised her eyebrows. "Gut. But if something goes wrong, I won't explain it to management alone."

Jakob grinned confidently. "You won't have to." The patient was treated without a CT scan -and indeed, Jacob was right. His diagnosis

was spot on, and the team had to readily acknowledge that he knew what he was doing. Nevertheless, a certain tension remained in the room.

Sophie couldn't take her eyes off Jakob, however. His casual manner, his precision -and his quick, provocative self-confidence -

irritated her. While she sat with Felix during the break, she tried to organize her thoughts. “I don’t know what to think of him,” she said, taking a sip of her coffee.

Felix looked at her questioningly. "You mean Winter? He's a bit direct, sure, but that's not a bad thing."

"It's not just that," Sophie replied, stirring her cup absentmindedly. "He has a way of getting on your nerves and..." “...and what?” Felix frowned. "Nothing," Sophie said hastily. She felt her

face warming and quickly changed the subject. "How are things going for you?" Is there any progress on the applications?"

Felix noticed that Sophie was trying to avoid the issue, but he left it at that for now. "Nothing concrete yet, but I have a good feeling about the position in surgery. Maybe

I'll bring up the subject at the meeting tomorrow." At the same time, Jakob attracted attention

with another surprising action. An elderly patient withThe patient had been admitted with cardiac arrhythmia, and instead of taking the usual steps, Jakob resorted to a lesser-known but faster method of diagnosis. “Isn’t that a bit risky?” asked Lukas skeptically as he watched Jakob place the electrodes with a sure grip.

"Risks are part of it," Jakob answered calmly, without taking his eyes off the monitor. "But sometimes you have to be brave to help more quickly."

When the results were positive and the patient was stabilized, the enthusiasm in the team was palpable - but also an underlying unease. Lena and Sophie meet later in the break room to discuss the events.

"He's really good," Lena admitted reluctantly. "But he's playing with fire." Sophie nodded. "It's like he always has to

prove that he's better than the rest." But honestly..." They paused. “What?” Lena looked at her inquiringly. "Nothing. Forget it." Sophie felt a strange

tingling sensation creep up her neck. She shook the thought away. Felix was the man she was happy with. Jakob Winter was just a

colleague - and perhaps a dangerous whirlwind that was throwing the entire clinic into disarray.

Chapter 3: A hot flirt at the reception

The emergency room was unusually quiet on this afternoon. At the front desk sat Carla, the receptionist who was known for her quick wit and her penchant for extravagant clothing.

Today she wore a bright red dress that accentuated her figure and her blonde curls were pulled up in a loose bun. With a mixture

of concentration and successful routine, she typed into her computer while greeting a patient every now and then.

Nurse Lukas came out of one of the treatment

rooms, a file under his arm. His expression was serious as always, almost grim, and his shoulders always seemed a little too tense.

He stopped abruptly in front of the reception desk. "Carla, where is Mr. Müller's file?" The war was here earlier."

Carla looked up from her screen and looked

at him with a mischievous smile. "Hello, Lukas. Nice of you to ask. And no, I don't have the fileswallowed."

Lukas rolled his eyes. "I don't have time for your jokes. I need the file."

"Well, then maybe you should look more closely." Carla opened a drawer and took out the file in question, but didn't push it towards him straight away. "But tell me, Lukas... Do you ever smile?" Or were you born with that grim frown?"

"Very funny," grumbled Lukas and reached for

the file. But Carla pulled it back and held it out of reach. "Wait," she said with a mischievous glint in

her eyes. "I'll only give it to you if you do me a favor." Lukas sighed deeply. "What do you want?"

"A smile," she demanded, leaning back

casually. "Just a little one. Come on, I bet you actually look quite charming when you smile." He frowned and shook his head. "I don't have time for this nonsense."

“Oh, Lukas,” said Carla disappointedly. “NoIt's a wonder everyone thinks you're such a standoffish guy. Maybe you're just not brave enough."

Lukas paused. “Not brave enough?” "Exactly," she replied, her voice now challenging. "It takes courage to loosen up."

But if you prefer to remain the serious nurse who never has any fun, that's okay too." Something in Carla's tone made him pause. Finally, the corners of his mouth twitched upwards in a snappy, quick smile that he probably hadn't shown in weeks. "There it is!" Carla clapped her hands in excitement and pushed the file towards him.

"See? It wasn't that difficult. And, surprise, you actually look charming." Lukas took the file and mumbled a barely

audible "Thank you" before turning to leave. But Carla's voice stopped him. "Wait a minute, Lukas," she called after him. "I have another question. How about

if"Maybe we have a coffee together after the shift? I promise not to annoy you to death. Maybe just a little bit."

He stopped and slowly turned to her. "Are you serious?"

"Absolutely," she said, this time without her usual sarcastic tone. "You're always so tense.

A little relaxation could do you good. And I'm excellent company." He hesitated, but then nodded briefly. "Okay. After the shift."

"Wonderful," said Carla and winked at him. "But put on a smile, otherwise I won't let you sit at my table."

When Lukas disappeared again, Carla watched him with a satisfied smile. Perhaps the grim nurse wasn't as aloof as he seemed. And Lukas? He felt his heart beating a little faster - something that hadn't happened to him for a long time.

Chapter 4: Secrets behind closed doors

Lena pushed open the door to the lounge and collapsed onto the sofa with a tired sigh. The night shift was quieter than she expected, but her thoughts had been circling around Marc

for days. Recently he had become noticeably withdrawn, often lost in thought or disappearing in the middle of conversations. It made her nervous.

“You look like someone stole your lunch,” remarked Sophie, who was sitting at the table with a steaming cup of coffee.

Lena gave her a sideways look. "Thanks for the analysis, Dr. Freud. It's Marc. There's something wrong with him."

“Have you noticed that there is something about the men in this clinic that is always not true?" Sophie joked, taking a sip of coffee. "But seriously, have you talked to him?"

"Of course I do," Lena said. "But he's completely blocking me." Last night I asked if everything was OK and he just replied that he was tired. Morenot."

Sophie frowned. "Maybe he's just stressed. The last few weeks have been hard for all of us."

“Maybe,” Lena murmured, but deep down she knew it had to be more.

Later that day, she saw Marc in the hallway. He was putting on his jacket, obviously on his way to recess.
