Chapter 1

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom in a dark, hot place. They called it the Kingdom of Mortem, after the king who created the kingdom three hundred years ago, who was also infamous for murdering many people across the land. Just outside the kingdom in a deep, dark cave an ancient creature lies in a deep slumber waiting to be awakened by a wanderer.

One day a group of wandering teenagers left the safety of the kingdom to go exploring. They hopelessly wandered around the forest for hours. Unable to find their way they feel lost, confused, and worried until they stumble upon the giant cave entrance. The oldest boy, 18, named Alexander dared the youngest girl, 15, named Sarah to go in the cave.

As she thought and pondered doing it there was a long, quiet, pause making them all feel awkward and uncomfortable. She said to him, “Throw a rock in the cave”

Alexander waited a minute thinking to himself “I might as well just to be sure because who knows what lies inside.” He grabs a rock and tosses it about 3 feet into the cave. Says, “There. Now go in the cave.”

Sarah felt unsafe with the little distance the rock went responded, “Throw it deeper, far enough to hit something.”

Reluctantly he picked up a larger rock and threw it as hard as he could into the cave and it bounced off the ground a couple of times, causing an echoing noise inside the cave. It bounces against the dragon awakening him. Unaware of the dragon being awoken, Sarah sighs and slowly walks into a cave with her torch in hand. She feels something wrong, an almost evil being somewhere in the cave. She thinks to herself “I shouldn’t be here and she begins to shake.”

Alexander yells from outside the cave, “Whattaya see in there.”

Sarah jumps slightly at Alexander’s sudden yell. She extends her arm and turns around observing her surroundings “A scaly wall!”

Alexander runs into the cave “A scaly wall?” He thinks to himself “I have to see this.”

He gets beside her and they look at the wall. He turns to her and says, “Touch it.”

Sarah reaches her arm out and accidentally pokes the dragon in the eye. As she pokes the eye, she feels it squishing under her hand, she thinks “What is this?” The eye opens and the dragon growls. They both scream and run out the cave as the ancient beast is awakened and slowly follows them out of the cave. They keep sprinting as fast as they can, but they are no match for the enormous legs of the dragon.

The dragon reaches down, grabs Alexander and, lifts him up toward his open mouth, bites his arm off and swallows it. Sarah screams in horror as blood from the severed arm squirts in her face. Alexander passes out from the pain and blood loss. The dragon tosses him in its mouth and bites down, popping him like a pimple, blood gushing all over the place. She faints and the dragon snatches her up and takes her into the cave for a later snack. He disappears into the shadows.

Meanwhile the third teenager a girl, age 19, named Demetria comes out of the shadow of a tree. She looks at the blood on the ground and goes to the entrance of the cave intrigued by the giant ancient creature that just devoured one of her friends and kidnapped the other.Demetria walks a little ways into the cave quietly and careful enough not to be heard. Thinking to herself I wonder what happened. The torch from before still glows in the cave just enough to see the silhouette of the Dragon. She stands there quietly in the dark staring at the giant beast and in the corner a cage with Sarah in it. She thinks oh my god I have to get her help or she’ll be eaten.

Demetria quietly makes her way to the edge of the cage. She carefully wakes Sarah up and says she’s gonna get her out of there. She slowly walks out of the cave through the forest. She makes her way through the forest to the main gate of the kingdom.

Chapter 2

When Demetria arrives at the kingdom it is around 5 in the evening. She runs to the king to tell him what happened. She tells him about the dragon and the blood and Susan.

The king does not believe her and he responds with , “I can’t do anything about that they should have known better than to go inside a dark cave and mess with a scaly wall how stupid can they be, everybody knows walls aren’t scaly.”

She shakes her head in disbelief feeling hurt, upset, and unsafe for if the king would not do anything in this situation would he protect them any other time. She yells at the king, “They’re not stupid. You’re stupid for not doing anything.”

Demetria goes to the town square to attempt to find some people that are willing to help her. She sees a sketchy looking man standing in a dark corner, smoking a cigarette. She thinks to herself “Should I trust him I guess it can’t hurt to try to talk to him.” She walks over to him and tells him the story of what happened. He tells her, “Meet me in the dark corner table, in the pub, at midnight, and bring everyone you find to help.”

Demetria wanders around the town square for three hours recruiting as many people as she can. Night comes, she gathers all the new recruits, and heads for the pub. Demetria looks around the pub, finds the dark corner table, she leads the recruits to the table, and they all sit. The man is perched against the wall drinking a whiskey and smoking a cigarette.

Demetria talks to the man telling him how many people they have, tools and weapons everyone can get, and asks “Is this is enough people.”

“It will be enough.” He says with a not caring tone.

Demetria decides to make the plan for the group. “ I believe that we need to just worry about getting Sarah out safe and sound and keep as many of us alive and well as possible. But we also need to either injury or kill the dragon.”

The man replies, “I agree but I think we should go ahead and kill the dragon before it can kill or hurt anyone else”

“We should just let that happen in the moment,” she replied.

The recruits all agreed. They went home, prepared, and met back at the pub the next morning.

Chapter 3

Demetria wakes up in the morning and retrieves her bag of equipment for the journey. She heads for the pub. When she arrives, she sees most of the other recruits have already arrived.

She walks in the pub, sits at the table in the dark corner, and says, “A couple people are not here yet so we will wait for their arrival before we leave.”

The people that are at the pub now sit waiting for the few other people to arrive. The strange man sits in a chair drinking a whiskey and sighs.

Demetria decides, “Fuck this. We’ve been waiting for three hours on these people we are leaving them behind and going on with who we have. If they show up at the pub they know where we are heading.”

The fifteen recruits gather their equipment, load the horses, and they leave the kingdom heading in the general direction they found the giant cave entrance. They walk in complete silence due to the anxiety, tension, and nerves everyone is feeling.

Demetria breaks the tension trying to make small to to ease the tension saying, “See that butterfly?”

The strange man responds to her ridiculous expression saying, “Who gives a damn about that fucking butterfly. We are chasing a goddamn dragon for fuck’s sake.”

Demetria gets insanely mad at him and says, “Who the hell are you to talk to me like that,” pinning him against the tree a small dagger pressed against his windpipe.

He loudly gulps down the fear, clearly afraid, his knees knocking together, and manages to squeak out, “Nobody”

The group behind them silent as death as she stares viciously into his eyes scaring him senseless. She says in an almost demonic voice, “That's what I thought.” She pulls the dagger back and pushes him to the ground, “How ‘bout don’t do that again and we will be just peachy.”

He nods in understanding and stumbles to his feet keeping an eye on her and says, “Let’s just get this over with before I have to actually fight you back you little shit.”

She looks at him half crazed and steps toward him. He begins jumping and leaping into the arms of one of the recruits. She smirks feeling accomplished, proud, and fierce. They continue their journey toward the cave completely silent tensions only growing as they get ever closer to the cave and most likely imminent death.

One of the recruits, a twenty five year old, a man named Charlie yells out, “I thought you said this fucking cave was only about a mile in. We’ve been walking for forty-five damn minutes.”

Demetria replies, “We will be there when we fucking get there.” They walk silently for a few minutes and they come upon the entrance to the cave and the spread out the width of the cave. Sarah who is still inside the cave starts screaming as loud as she can and one of the recruits starts freaking out and runs toward the castle, another recruit heroically running in the cave trying to be the hero and get the girl in hopes of getting laid. Fifteen feet into the cave he is confronted by the humongous dragon and is frozen in fear.

Demetria leads her army of recruits into the cave and sees the other recruit now frozen in fear. The dragon spits fire in front of the small army of recruits blocking them while he eats his fear-frozen snack. He snatches up the light snacks and bites down on his head and swallowing it and throws the body at the army blood gushing all over them, scaring most of them so bad they run the whole way back to the kingdom. Few recruits remain headstrong standing up to the fire-guarded dragon. Demetria leads her quickly shrinking army of recruits back out the cave to regroup and come up with a different plan to get around the fire wall. As she’s trying to come up with a plan she instructs one of the recruits to take a head count.

A couple seconds go by and he says, “Seven are left ma’am and eight have gone awol.”

“Damn,” she responds, “that puts a huge barcade in my plans.”

Thirty minutes go by and the recruits are sitting by a small pond a few feet from the cave entrance. Demetria gets an idea and says, “Everybody get as wet as you possibly can.”

The recruits all jump in the water and Demetria looks inside the cave at the wall of fire still blazing, she goes and jumps into the pond to get wet. The recruits get out of the water completely soaked and Demetria instructs them, “Get in formation at the entrance quickly.” She gets out, gets in formation, and leads them through the fire as swiftly and quietly as she can. The dragon is alerted, turns to the group of recruits, and prepares to engulf them in flames.

Just before he spits fire Demetria calls out, “Scatter! He can’t kill us all if we aren’t in the same small group.”

The recruits scatter and run around like ants trying to confuse the dragon and make him dizzy as Demetria attempts to sneak by the dragon and unlock the cage and free Sarah.

The dizzy dragon steps back as Demetria gets by him and knocks down Demetria with his enormous foot, stepping on her leg shattering her femur. Trapped under the tremendous weight of the giant beast she screams out painfully. One of the younger recruits goes to her and hopelessly attempts to free her. Realizing it’s a lost cause he grabs Demetria’s dagger and stabs the beast in the heel of its foot hoping it’ll jump just enough to pull Demetria free. Due to the large size of the dragon the small dagger has little to no effect on him. He looks around for a bigger dagger or sword. He looks in the corner and sees the glistening of a sword that looks much older than any he’s ever seen. He picks up the sword and stabs the heel of the dragon, it burns its heel. The dragon screams in pain and runs out of the cave. Demetria stands up, ignoring the pain and shattered femur, as tho nothing happened. She goes to the cage and opens the door with the key and frees Sarah as she collapses.

Chapter 4

Demetria wakes up three weeks later in the infirmary. She begins thinking “What happened, where am I.” Before sitting up, she looks around to see where she is. She slowly sits up and from what seems to be out of nowhere the young recruit that freed her from the dragon’s enormous foot says, “Good you’re alive I was afraid you would never wake up.”

Still dazed she replies, “Wake up from what? Why wouldn’t I be alive? What the hell happened?” He sighs deeply and begins telling her the story of what had happened three weeks ago. When he finishes telling her what happens she looks around and sighs. There is a long silence and she asks, “How many made it back alive?” He pauses and waits quite a while before responding and impatiently she says, “Well..”

“Four,” he responds, “Four people made it back.”

“Was Sarah one of those four?”

“Yes. Sarah, you, Mitch and I.”

She sighs feeling bad for doing so much for one person. She thinks to herself “I feel like I should apologize for putting him through that and losing all those people.” She sits there thinking about how she will apologize, feeling bad for everything. He looks at her seeing that she is feeling bad about something and thinks “she is probably feeling bad for what happened.”

He says, “Don't worry about those people. They meant nothing to me. All that matters is that you’re safe.” His voice has a sincere, caring, almost loving tone when he talks about her. She looks at him slightly teared up. “I’m still sorry I feel awful for risking all those people’s lives for one person.” She sniffles trying not to cry. She looks down and to the side trying not to look at him. He watches her and gently says, “It is okay. Please don't cry. Those beautiful eyes shouldn’t ever cry any tears but tears of joy.” He gently lifts her head, making her look at him. She can tell by the look in his eyes that he has feelings for her and is being sincere. She turns her head back away from him still feeling bad for everything. He puts his hand gently and lovingly on her cheek and kisses the top of her head. “It’s okay. Don’t blame yourself. You thought you was doing the right thing and you was. So please don't cry.”

She sniffles and nods meaning okay I won’t. She slightly rubs her cheek against his hand, not used to being touched so gently and caringly. She puts her hand gently on his hand, slightly gripping it. She says her voice cracking a little from crying, “I’m still sorry. I caused all those people to lose their lives.” She sniffles, tearing up more, fighting actually crying.

While she’s going on he leans in quickly and passionately kisses her to shut her up and says, “Shhh it’s okay.”

In the middle of their little kiss Sarah busts through the door yelling, “Dem you made it you crazy bitch!” They quickly pull back and blush as she says, “Oh am I interrupting something?”

Demetria responds quickly, stuttering, and choking on her words, “Nno it’s nnothing. Plplease come on in.”

He gets up swiftly and leaves the infirmary embarrassed mumbling under his breath “you crazy idiot what have you done.”

As he leaves she feels slightly sad because of him leaving and doesn’t want him to leave but watches him leave. Sarah looks at her and realizes she likes him a little. Sarah says, “I’m sorry I shouldn’t have busted in like that.”

Demetria responds,”It’s okay. Don't worry about it.”

“You sure? You seem kind of sad now. Do you like him?”

Demetria blushes and stutters, “WHAT! Nno. Of course not.”

“Uh huh. Sure. If you won’t tell me fine I’ll just leave.”

“Alright. See you later.”

Sarah leaves Demetria alone. Demetria thinks “Maybe I do like him.”

Chapter 5

Meanwhile, He gets most of the way to the town square and remembers he doesn’t have a home to go to and goes to the alleyway beside the pub to an old canopy and leans against the wall and slides down it sitting down as it starts thunderstorming. Rain pours off the sides of the canopy and through a crack between the canopy and the building dripping on his head. He looks down ignoring the rain, half enjoying it, thinking about Demetria. Even though it's a cold day he feels really warm inside.

Demetria gets up out of her infirmary bed and slowly and quietly walks to the town square looking for him. She walks by the alleyway and hears him sniffle. She walks down the alley toward him and kneels beside him and says, “Hey.”

Without looking up he says, “Hey. Sorry about what happened in there I got...” Before he can finish she kisses him as passionately as it was in the infirmary. After a minute and a half she pulls away slowly her eyes still closed.

“We didn’t get to finish in there.” she says. He smiles like a fool and blushes as she asks, “What are you doing here? Why didn’t you go home?”

He hesitates and tries to think up a good lie and stutters being a bad liar, “I uh it started raining so I took shelter.”

She knew he was lying and said. “You ran 10 feet into a dark alley for shelter instead going into the pub or one of the other eight buildings in the town square.”

He sighs. “This is my home I am too poor to buy a house.”

She kneels down beside him and rubs his back a little and reaches for his hand. “Come with me.” she says. “You can stay with me, I have an extra room you can use…” She pauses for a moment and continues, “or you can take up the extra space in my bed. I feel rather unsafe in my home by myself.”

He looks at her trying to hide his excitement and says, “Really? You’d let me stay there. I’ve been staying here since my parents died and the house got taken ten years ago.”

She gasps and says half surprised, “Really? That’s crazy you should have been helped. I should have found you sooner and took you in sooner. I live alone my parents died when I was a baby I’ve been living by myself for a long time.”

He looks in her eyes as she picks him up and says, “I’ll carry you come on.”

He panics a little, not showing it, and says, “Okay.”

She gets to her house, a two story mansion with five bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large kitchen. She walks to her bedroom upstairs, and playfully drops him on her bed, a queen bed with a top on it with curtains on the corners, like a princess style bed. She flops on the bed beside him and pretends to be out of breath. They lie on the bed, laughing for a few minutes. He rolls over and jumps off the bed and asks, “Where’s the bathroom, babe.”

She says completely shocked, “What did you call me.”

He quickly answers back, “Dem I said Dem.”

She blushes and says, “First door on your right puddin’.”

He walks into the bathroom hating himself for calling her babe. He pisses and looks in the small mirror on the wall questioning his sanity. He reaches for the door handle and hesitates before opening it. He walks toward the bedroom, sees her asleep in the bed and crawls in the bed on his knees and stands up. He jumps on the bed and she screams and laughs bouncing on the bed trying to get up.

He flops down on the bed landing on his side looking at her catching his breath. They lock eyes for a moment and he feels his world stop turning and finds himself lost in her beautiful eyes. After what feels like no time Demetria turns and looks at the position of the sun and sees its midnight and she curls up. He looks at her for a moment and scoots a little closer. She smiles and scoots back a little and lays her head on his upper bicep and wraps her legs around his and scoots the rest of the way against him, they spoon, and she falls immediately asleep. He smiles, snuggles into her, and goes to sleep feeling the comfort of the bed for the first time in more than ten years.

Chapter 6

He wakes up the next morning and to his surprise she’s gone. Feeling stupid he rolls onto his back and thinks to himself, “Come on stupid. What’s wrong with you.” She yells from the kitchen, “Want some breakfast, Lance.” She feels much safer and happier than she has ever before. For the first time in years she slept peacefully without worrying about something bad.

Not expecting her to even been there, he feels happy and a feeling of pleasure to have someone who he cares about not leave for the first time. He jumps up out of bed, walks to the kitchen, looks at her, and sees she has breakfast ready, “Sure it looks good. I bet it tastes as good as it looks.”

She smiles and says, “I highly doubt that.” She sits two plates on the table and pulls out his chair and sits in hers.

He goes to the chair , sits down, scoots up to the table, and grabs a fork. He looks at her and says, “You're lookin’ mighty fine this morning.”

Blushing red as a rose, she looks down at her plate unable to say a word or even make a noise. Nervous by her silent response he starts eating and says, “This tastes really good, sweetheart.”

She blushes even more and manages to squeak out, “Tthanks.” and starts eating unable to look at him.

They eat in complete silence until they are both finished. Lance stands up, takes the plates, and does dishes. While Demetria sits there completely dumbfounded by how sweet he is acting. While she still there she puts her hands together and twirls her thumbs feeling happy. She silently looks up at him, contemplates hugging him from behind, and looks back down. Slowly deciding, she stands up and makes her way behind him. She stands there like a statue directly behind him having second thoughts whether or not she should and being to nervous to make a move. He can sense her standing there and glances back just to confirm his sense. Once he confirms she’s behind him, he braces for impact and she manages to shift enough of her weight to flop into his back, throwing her arms around him, clenching her hands together at his stomach. He smiles from ear to ear and pats her hands. She sighs and giggles when he touches her.

He finishes up the few dishes that were used and turns around to face her, feeling nervous, and somewhat excited trying not to show it he says, “Let’s go out today. How about a picnic?”

She nervously replies trying not to blush and trying to hide her excited for his question. “Sure. Where do you want to go to do it?”

“How about the beach?” he responds. “I know a beautiful hidden place. It will take a little hiking to get to but you’ll see it is very worth it.” He thinks to himself “yeah beautiful like you.”

She thinks about it for a minute. She feels like she can trust him. She also feels safe and wanted by him. “Okay. That sounds fun.”

“It’ll be perfect you’ll see. It has the best view I’ve ever seen in my life.” He thinks to himself “WAHOO.”

She smirked and playfully responses, “I’ll be the judge of that.” She giggles a little while responding.

He giggles a little at her playful response, “What kind of food do you want to take. It’ll be easiest to pack light. The terrain on the hike is too rough for a small horse and too rough for us to carry heavy.” He thinks god this girl is so amazing, how did i get so lucky.

“Hmmmmm….. How about just a couple of sandwiches or something like that?”

“Perfect, what kind of sandwiches do you want? Also, what do you want to take to drink? Perhaps some wine?”

“That, That sounds perfect………. Just like you.”

He blushes like hell and looks down. “You wanna get the sandwiches together and I’ll go buy some wine.”
