UNDERSTANDING CHILDREN & THEIR FAMILIES

CHAPTER 1

Children in A Family

A family implants the initial seeds of common sense, logical thinking and intelligence to children. A family is such a beautiful setup which bears and rears their children right from their birth. Parents also train them mentally to facilitate them to intermingle freely in the society. It also helps them to face the challenges and realities of the outer world. Children born and brought up under such family guidance start understanding the functioning of the society and its setup in a better way. Hence, they are also in a better position to respect and acknowledge the importance it holds for the common man. And accordingly, they themselves also get accustomed to its ways in a positive manner. Sound fundamentals and intelligence ensure smooth functioning of the society which forms the base of a good and decent civilisation.

Children are the centre of attention of everyone’s desires and expectations in the family. They are also the basis of the achievements, recognition and honour of the family. Everywhere in the world, children are the basis of the whole social setup for whom we all struggle throughout our lives. There are two main concerns with respect to children. One is, their well-being and safety. And the other is, their psychological development. Parents and guardians work hard day and night to ensure a comfortable upbringing of their offsprings.

Birds and animals also undertake their responsibilities very well. Birds bring food in their beaks and feed their children with it. Man being the most developed species in the universe has the ability to feed their children as well as nurture them mentally too. He also ensures in the process that they continuously keep developing their abilities and knowledge further. Their abilities and competency enable them to take care of their surroundings and they gradually become an integral part of the society. Of what use is knowledge and ability of a learned surgeon if he doesn’t treat even a single person?

Knowledge and ability are developed to benefit the society at large. Each and every act of a person is influenced by his nature, habits and his way of thinking, which in turn greatly influences his family and children. He devotes his time, efforts and resources so that his children are far more intelligent, competent and successful than him. His children may not commit the same mistakes or face the bitter challenges of life, or they may not also lag behind due to any other shortcomings. This desire motivates him to work harder so that his children get the best of education and other facilities required. This enables them a fair standing in the society where they are recognised and respected.

A large chunk of our population is still engaged as farmers and labourers. Their poverty denies their children even the basic amenities and education. On the other hand, those who are prosperous feel a sense of pride in sending their children to English medium schools. Even struggling financially, many people belonging to the middle and upper middle class families have now started realising the necessity of good education which plays a major role in the mental development and competence of their children.

Over the years, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of high class educational institutions everywhere in the country. Children from wealthy families are enthusiatic in gaining admissions even in private play schools since their early ages itself. On the other hand, the government run schools are being considered as inferior by the society. Big private schools and educational institutions have become an industry in itself. Gaining admissions in such high class and expensive schools have become a prestigious issue among the masses. Here parents spend big amounts of money at the time of addmissions and later on, they have to bear all their other tantrums as, well.

The main objective is to keep the children well informed and updated in their studies so as to keep pace with the latest developments. But even after all such arrangements for the betterment of their children, parents are still worried and tense. More and more children are getting misinformed and misguided by the glamour of the cinema and fashion world. Its culture is prompting them into wrong habits at a very tender and innocent age meant for their studies only. Parents should adopt a more practical and mature approach towards this kind of menace and hence, ensure a bright future for their children.

Children born from the legally and socially accepted marriages are respectable in the society. They also form the basis of expectations and desires of their parents. It becomes the moral and social duty of parents to take appropriate interest in the proper upbringing and education of their children. Some children even get deprived from their due share of love and affection from their parents. It happens when there is a conflict or misunderstanding between their parents. Such children generally grow up and live with low self-esteem and little self-confidence throughout their lives.

On the other hand, there are lakhs of bright and genius children but their intellect often goes unnoticed. It does not get utilised due to their backgrounds and other living conditions. This is more common with children born to families engaged in numerous labour activities. These labourers are mostly working on daily wages and are often seen migrating from one place to the other. These are generally the landless farmers, construction workers, miners, etc. There are others also categorised as living below the poverty line or living in temporary hutments, etc.

Such children also start leading lives like their parents and disappear within the ordinary crowd. Thus, they become frustrated, and are a burden for themselves and their families. Gradually, they also prove to be an additional and unnecessarily created responsibility for the society and the nation, on the whole. Since neglected by their own families and left with no other choice, these children also get engaged in similar activities like their parents to make a living. Most of the time, they are also found to be roaming uselessly. Some of them even indulge in committing small crimes. It also happens in the absence of the availability of any work. Gradually after gaining some confidence, with maturity and the passage of time, these petty crimes further lead them into the trap of other heinous criminal acts. Their intellect adopts the wrong course and it becomes a curse on the society itself.

The intellect has its own understanding and its own psychology. It has to be observed as to how it is being applied. It can be used in a positive or constructive way or in a negative or destructive way. Like, a surgeon may use a knife in saving the life of his patient by performing an operation, or a person may use it for committing a crime like murdering someone or frightening other people. With regular practice, a person may sharpen his skills either in the form of some creativity like music, painting, designing, etc. or in robbing and troubling people.

Parents who have or are willing to have children also try to ensure the fulfilment of all the necessary facilities within their reach. These are necessary for the continuous progress and development of their children. Sacrificing and neglecting their own needs, parents are often seen involved in making various arrangements, in fulfilling the needs of their children. Their attention and desires are focussed only on the development and progress of their children. They consider them as a support in their old age, they want them to be capable as well.

Good understanding and a amicable relationship between mother and father has a very positive impact on their children. Ladies in the family also put in extra efforts in maintaining peace and harmony at home. They are often found to be engaged in keeping their homes neat and tidy. They also take up a job, etc. to enhance the collective earnings of the family. Alert and vigilant parents take due care of even the smallest of things of their kids. They try to eliminate all chances of having any kind of wrong effects on their children. Some people even avoid smoking or consuming liquor at their homes or in front of their children. Such acts generally have a negative bearing on children and they may also adopt these bad habits. Bad habits are never suitable to anyone whatever the age maybe.

The atmosphere in the family has a direct impact on the well-being of children. Whenever there are disagreements between couples or they continuously keep arguing, abusing and fighting with each other, children also start building up tensions and fear inside them. Many times, children are not able to convey their feelings and needs properly when they get neglected even for their basic requirements. They get frustrated, remain lost and unto themselves most of the time. They gradually become introvert, thus, living in a world of their own. Similar is the situation of working couples in nuclear families. Most of them are found not to be able to devote enough quality time with their children, which is a must for assessing their needs and providing time for togetherness as well as developing mutual understanding.

On the other hand, when a child is showered with more than the required love and affection, then also the results are not so favourable. This is generally felt in situations where a male child is born after several girls who were born earlier. It also happens in the case of the first child to a couple, or a baby born after a prolonged delay. In many such cases, freedom of children is highly restricted by their parents. It happens out of their own fears and phobias. Their upbringing is also not quite normal which greatly hampers their natural growth, learning and development of talents. In this way, they remain greatly affected due to many shortcomings for the rest of their lives.

The children’s intellect and talents also get deprived due to little or no personal attention in joint families. It is because there are several members in the family including children different ages. They all have their own unique needs, desires of and problems. There are also greater instances of confusions disagreements and altercations, even on minor issues, between the various members of the family. All these disturb the peace and harmony of the household which is the most important aspect.

Many times, financial limitations also emerge as a very big discouraging factor in big families. Sometimes, it becomes very challenging in allowing every child equal right and the luxury to have good education and other facilities. Frustrations and tensions of the elders gradually start affecting the normal learning process and talents of children. Many such children thereby develop an inferiority complex in themselves and they also begin leading a depressed life. There also erupts jealousy and hatred between the successful and the not so successful siblings endangering the love, affection and unity in the family. Gradually, with the increasing disagreements, the family members and the siblings start parting their ways in different directions.

In a small family setup, children generally get the devoted attention and involvement of their parents. The mother’s role is important as she is in regular touch and hence, more aware of her children’s needs. Such nuclear families are gaining importance and have become the new norm of the modern society. An enhanced difference in the learning ability is felt in children whenever they begin getting personal attention from their teachers also. This happens when the teacher also recognises their special talents and interests, and guides them accordingly in developing them further. With love, care and support, children can be inspired to upgrade their skills. But in the absence of such a support system, such intelligent children feel unloved, uncared and unprotected which demotivates them. It results into unwanted tensions and they further get frustrated in life.

Children get involved and start participating actively in their area of interest whenever they are inspired and guided towards it. It has been felt that even shy children become more talkative and begin to intermingle with others. Unhesitantly, they also start playing, singing, dancing, acting, etc. Some even move a step forward and begin working towards social and charitable causes also.

At such a stage, getting neglected badly impacts their desires and many of them lose hope forever. It is similar to plants and flowers also which become lively and more attractive when they are nourished with sufficient amounts of water, sunlight and good care. Abilities and competence of children increases tremendously after a boost of motivation from their parents, teachers, guides and other seniors. It encourages them to struggle and put in extra efforts towards their goals in an organised way. In this way, they are also able to overcome their regret of not achieving the top position whenever such a situation arises in life. Thus ,with their calm and persistent approach, they keep working towards their goals and achieve higher ranks as well.

Development of a child’s capability and competency is also influenced by his position among his siblings. He could be the eldest, the youngest or in between. Other than being the eldest child, the other two positions are generally more favourable and fortunate. The younger siblings tend to receive more love, support and guidance from their elder brothers and sisters, besides their parents as well. They are also greatly influenced by their elder siblings which in turn also offer them a chance to differentiate between the good and the bad since a very early age. Psychologists are of the opinion that children grow better in a proper family setup. It implants the first and the foremost intelligence and understanding to them. In this way, children start recognising and respecting the importance and functioning of the society in a better way.

Children start knowing about the relationships, its working and importance through a family setup only. And gradually, as they come in contact with other people, they get connected and start recognising the words, like Mummy, Daddy, Uncle, Aunty, Brother, Sister, etc. They get influenced, observe people and their learning begins. It later on adds up to their talents and shapes up their personalities. Like many young children in the families of doctors and chemists have a better understanding and awareness about diseases and their prescriptions, etc. Many children have shown similar traits of understanding and workmanship as per their parents’ works and professions since their early ages. These qualities may have passed down genetically.

A family has been recognised as the first school of learning for children. The initial lessons, the teachings all takes place within the family itself. Children also observe the habits, lifestyles and personalities of all the people around them. It has a deep impact on the development of all the spheres of their lives. They cannot remain aloof from it. Besides the genetic inheritance, children’s observations and its influence on them also endows them with similar habits and traits as has been found in their families, parents or ancestors.

In the early stages of life, children are not familiar with the right and the wrong. Hence, they return back and behave with their parents and others in the same way as they have observed them, or they themselves have been dealt by their parents, other elders in the family or in the neighbourhood.

Children have shown encouraging results in their developments, where their parents got involved and took due interest in their day to day activities. Parents who behave like friends with their children often start devoting more time to them. Parents who notice, show faith and praise even the smallest of thier acts motivate their children to work harder. It also enables them to do better and excel in their studies, as well as other extra-curricular activities. Parents should sometimes behave with them as if they are of their age group. They should listen and answer to their queries appropriately and address to their concerns seriously. This in turn will avoid all types of communication gaps. It has been found to be a very big deterrent in the proper upbringing and development of children.

Often neglecting and scolding children or not showing appropriate interest in their abilities demotivates and discourages them. They will lose their interests and enthusiasm and gradually start withdrawing themselves from all kinds of activities. They also try to avoid their parents, and love and respect for them also start diminishing. Charging up such children again who have reached at this stage of frustration becomes a tedious task for their parents as well as their mentors.

Parents are considered to be the most lovable, respected and trusted companions of children since their birth. They approach them with great expectations several times, repeatedly, either for their needs, troubles or for appreciation. Children are highly encouraged and pleased when their parents patiently hear and tend to their requirements.

Encouraging children to participate in activities, such as singing, dancing, painting, sketching, etc. develops their creative ideas. It further sharpens their minds and helps them to achieve better grades as well. Children also get committed for their participation and performance when their parents inspire and support them. It could be monetary support or helping them in arranging the materials required. It could be the colours, brush, drawing sheets, certain dresses or other fabric, musical instruments, etc. Such children are found to be more obedient and well behaved. They are also deeply loved, praised, accepted and respected by everyone in the society.

Children should never be disregarded even if they have some kind of bodily defect or deformity, are mentally or physically weaker than others, or undergoing any prolonged medical treatment, etc. Instead they require greater love, care and understanding due to their deficiencies and shortcomings. Many people and families are still gender-biased against their girl child, which is mentally as well as morally condemnable. Many times, the most lovable child of the family also gets mentally disturbed when he/she is showered with undue love and care. Hence, he also deviates from the right path of development of his/her abilities.

Social values play a big role in the mental and social development of children. Respect and acceptance for the fundamental values and responsibilities of the society is the basic difference between children undergoing formal education in a school or not. Children enrolled in schools develop the following good habits. It raises their level of self-confidence substantially. Hence, they tend to be more successful as compared to other children who are involved in numerous other useless activities:

Learning through Concentrated Efforts

Command over Various Subjects

Discipline & Punctuality

Physical & Mental Development

Respect for Social & Moral Values

Love & Respect for Others

Helping Each Other

Mental Alertness

Teamwork

Maturity

School-going children learn the inter-personal skills better under the constant guidance and supervision of their teachers. It is important and useful throughout their lives and in their careers as well. They are more polite and courteous towards each other. Different types of games, sports and projects help to develop their numerous talents. It teaches and trains them good coordination, organisational skills, being responsible, taking initiatives and teamspirit towards achievement of a common goal.

All children are endowed with numerous kinds of talents, which needs to be awakened using different techniques. Teachers are trained in such matters and are better equipped in unlocking the hidden talents within children. Hence, the need for a good school arises. Under the regular super-vision of teachers, these talents are developed and directed towards positive activities. Positivity is important and useful for the socio-economic well-being of children as well as for the society.

Talents and personalities of children are like a packed parcel from the Heaven. It has to be opened slowly and with great caution. Each and every child is unique in himself of herself. Whereas some children are very active since birth, others may be silent, yet some others tend to sleep more, some feel disturbed or irritated and always keep on crying. Some are very friendly, happy and smiling throughout their lives. Their habits and behaviour change with the passage of time. Some psychologists are of the opinion that the nature and habits in the initial days of childhood influences their abilities, learnings, talents and attitude in future. As they mature, certain specific differences in their personalities are also observed.

The average age of children before beginning their formal education is generally in the age group of 3 to 6 years. With the introduction of play schools, the average age of children starting their schooling has come down considerably. It has been observed that children of this age are more influenced and attached to their mothers as compared to other members of the family. But they get along with other children of their age groups in the neighbourhood or elsewhere rather easily. In this age, they are also not aware of the gender differences among themselves. But by the time they reach the primary classes, gradually, they become more observant and informed about the differences between a boy and a girl. To start with, their dressing habits, their natural instincts, their interests, their habits, games they like to play, etc. make them wary of the differences.

Children when supported and guided properly start taking interest in their studies. In this regard, the other guiding factors are with respect to their initial excitement towards their school and education. How it was handled and how their feelings were taken into consideration. They work hard and excel in their studies, feel free, joyous and more self- confident. They come across and get to spend considerable time with new children which enables them to form new friendships in their school. It could be with regard to their areas of interest or likings developed for each other. Now bonding with new friends is a regular process. The interests and likings of children keep changing with the passage of time and new learnings. Some friends also start visiting each other’s homes to meet and initiate their interests. It could be for studies, for the sake of enjoyment or playing together, or simply for spending some time together.

Different stages in the lives of children bring forth new challenges and responsibilities for the parents also. They have to be very watchful of the each and every step of their children so as to forsee any impending trouble for either of them. Children often tend to adopt a role model for themselves in this age and get obsessed with them. In this tender age of learning, they are quite misinformed and misguided, impressed and influenced by their friends, especially of the opposite sex, seniors, teachers, a family friend or by a relative. Unaware of the consequences of such behaviour at this growing age when self confidence is also increasing, parents have a very crucial role to play.

Difference of opinions begin to take place frequently which should be handled with care, high level of understanding and maturity by the parents. In this way, children gain better insight into their parents’ words of caution. Friends being in the same age group have similar interests and way of thinking, so they share and rely on their friends more. With the growing level of understanding and maturity of children, the bonding between friends generally keep changing and new friendships keep taking place. Sometimes they also quarrel over trivial issues. Watchful parents should let their children learn to settle their disputes peacefully among themselves. They should intervene only and when the situation worsens. All such events have a deep impact on the learnings and development of children.

During puberty and teenage, physical, mental and hormonal changes take place rapidly. It is not just a new experience for the children, but also leaves them confused as well as amazed. They are now more obsessed with their bodies and their looks. Many of them are now more attracted towards the opposite sex.

Their natural instincts persuade them to be well dressed and well behaved. They also continuously show-off and often try to impress others. There is also a great change in their behaviour, way of thinking and interests. They are now infused with a fresh, new and different kind of energy. It transforms them into young adults. But this is also a major time for expanding their horizons which in turn will further develop their learning and creative abilities.

Many times, children are prompted by their own instincts as well as provoked by others also to indulge in mischevious activities. Such kind of thinking, behaviour and acts have lifelong consequences on their well-being and self-respect. It could be indulging in sex and getting entangled with unwanted pregnancies or abortions thereafter. It could also be intoxication of any kind of drugs, smoking or consuming liquor, etc. under peer pressure or just to show-off. Parents should start treating and behaving with their own children like their friends and gain their faith. It would prove to be better than scolding and dictating terms and conditions, every now and then. Befriending their own children, parents gain an insight into the newly arised needs, desires, fears and phobias of their children from time to time. This enables them to tackle their anxieties in the most suitable way without disturbing the pace of their regular studies and upbringing.

The personality of a child can broadly be classified into the following two categories:

Introvert

Extrovert

Both the personality types are opposite to each other. The introvert type of children are more inclined towards their inner self. They are hesitant, less talkative, deep thinkers, thoughtful and creative, truthful and honest. They are simple and shy, easy going, soft-hearted and studious. They are also found to possess a spiritual ben of mind and originality of ideas. They generally undertake works requiring undivided attention and concentration. They enjoy lonliness and peace. They are attractive and attention-seekers, helpful, far-sighted and cautious. Mathematics and Science are generally their favourite subjects of interest.

Whereas extrovert children are socially more active, self-centred, like to be prasied and flattered. Their aim is to enjoy each and every moment of their life and are least bothered about their future.

Besides studies, many of them take initiative in social welfare activities and execute their responsibilities rather well. They are well spoken and well behaved. They also get along well with others and get adapt to new circumstances of the outer world rather fast. Keeping the correct and incorrect aspects in mind, they are quite competent and expert in executing any given task.

Some children are bestowed upon and develop both types of characteristics with the passage of time and other events taking place in one’s life. It also greatly depends on how parents inspire, nourish and redirect their interests and abilities.

Its evaluation will have to be carried out on a continuous basis so that there remains no communication gap. And in the case of even the slightest of any misunderstanding taking place, it can be addressed immediately. Proper and timely detection and motivation by parents enhances the capability of their children. It induces self-confidence in them to work hard and excel in studies and be successful in their lives.

CHAPTER 2

THE ENVIRONMENT OF A FAMILY

Family and social atmosphere here refers to those internal and external forces, pressures, influences, circumstances and behaviour which have a direct impact on children. It could be in terms of their living standards, dressing styles, spending and consumption, family cultures and rituals, understanding, attitude and behaviour towards others, etc. Such influences shape up the course of development and the personality of children, and they accordingly delve themselves to the likes, dislikes and desires of their families.

The personalities of children are the direct outcome of their living conditions and environment. Though some psychologists also give importance to the genetic inheritance on the behaviour of children. But modern scientists and sociologists have a different view. They stress more on the importance of the environment in influencing and shaping the character of children. They also opine that all newborn babies are at par and similar, and hence, they can be moulded as per one’s desires. They adopt their religion and surname according to the family born into. A learned scholar has pointed out that even an innocent child will adopt and learn dubious means of living who has grown under the shadow of a criminal. That is why the principle of inheritance of genetic order within the family has been given less priority and importance. Though a child’s physical build-up, appearance, features, height, etc. cannot be neglected as being inherited from his ancestors, but his mentality, competency and nature are the results of his current environment only.

The impact of Environment means the influence of social and cultural forces on children since their birth and its development thereafter. It refers to the whole setup wherein children grow up, develop and receive education. It considers and influences their backgrounds, levels of their parents’ education, general understanding and financial conditions. It also assesses fulfilment of their basic daily requirements, such as food, clothing, shelter and nourishment along with a healthy and balanced diet. Children from poor and backward classes lack self-confidence which further disables them to keep pace with the current levels of education. They also lag behind in understanding the rapidly changing technological advancements. Hence, it proves to be a big hindrance in learning as compared to the children from relatively better informed and prosperous families.

Schools in the metropolitan and big cities undertake extensive introductions and interview processes of the parents besides their children also. It is done to enquire about their appropriate backgrounds and upbringing. It also ensures of being provided the basic requirements for a healthy environment and growth of their children. This has a long term bearing on the goodwill of the educational institutions also. Imparting education to children from good educational backgrounds and prosperous families take place on an entirely different platform. It ultimately results into better learning and excellence in studies. This, in turn enhances the reputation of the educational institutions also. Otherwise, both the child and the institution will not progress much and develop well, thereby inhibiting the abilities and learning of children.

Children who have access to good living conditions, such as a big house, grow with a totally different, better and positive mental energy. A good house is one which allows ample amount of natural light and ventilation, clean and hygenic surroundings, greenery and natural beauty all around. Such children are more ambitious since their birth itself and are more likely to fulfil their parents’ dreams and desires. Such children also have more progressive thoughts and are more cultured and civilised, whereas, children belonging to disturbed or querrelsomefamilies have to suffer frequent disruptions in their studies. They are found to have limited interactions with fellow friends and classmates. It further restricts their growth and are more unlikely to fulfil their parents’ wishes.

The next influence which has a positive impression on children is their school. A school must be such which motivates children towards it for an enjoyable, friendly and everlasting association. Children are impressed when they come across a big strong building with large doors and windows, neat and clean premises, a beautiful garden and properly maintained lawn. Ample space and facilities for indoor and outdoor activities, a hygienic place for canteen, drinking water and toilets, etc. also attract them. Satisfied in all aspects, children become mentally prepared to begin their formal education.

Every morning, children look forward to start their day in a special way and put in their best efforts for its fulfilment.
