Somewhere in the forests of Ireland, a man is sleeping in his cabin.
It’s far in the past and he is about to open his eyes....
He sits up, what a rough morning he thinks to himself.
It’s springtime, but this particular morning is rather chilly.
He looks around and goes over to the stove to get the fire started and make some breakfast.
It’s still early and the sun has little more than gone up. For a musician such as himself getting a job was not easy and he would mostly have to spend his time as a day labourer. He looked in the mirror and thought what a mess eh George. A comb and a quick shave soon made that better.
He sat down at the table and ate his breakfast; it consisted of porridge, a few slices of bacon and a cup of coffee. Then he proceeded to take of the robe he had put on as he went out of bed, and put on an old suit, put a little cologne on and went out the door with his violin in hand.
His home was a cabin in the woods and as he came out he put the saddle on his horse he kept in a small stable out front. His cabin was of a classic timber design with a single window on the back.
When one entered his bed would be on the right, his stove and other necessities and wardrobe on the left and a table in front of the window straight ahead with two chairs, not that he would often have company.
Along the little road ahead where forests then deep woods with pine trees on each side.
He comes into town and ties up his horse.
Then continues down the street and knocks on a door.
Welcome in George says a voice as the door opens and he steps in.
How pleasant to see you again Ms MacNamara and Mrs O’Brien.
Excuse me I’m heading out says yet another voice.
Have a lovely day Mr O’Brien says George as the man tips his hat and heads out and Mrs O’Brien chimes in with: and take good care, I’ll see you for dinner.
Shall we get started? asks George.
Certainly replies the woman and shows him in to a room where her daughter is waiting already with violin in hand.
Let’s begin with the tuning he says and takes a seat.
It can be a little tricky as it is kind of backwards but I’m sure you will get it soon enough.
Place the Violin between your shoulder and chin like this.
It should be able to stay there without any help from the hands.
Hold the bow gently with your fingers like this, in this position.
Let me help you, ah yes there it is.
Now place the bow on a string and move it firmly yet gently with a smooth motion. That’s right. The little girl turned and looked at her mother and said: Look mommy! I’m playing!
That’s very good dear, I’ll be in the next room if you need anything said her mother and left.
George spent the next two hours practicing with the little girl,
teaching her proper form, the locations of the notes, and a first song that she could practice on her own until her next lesson.
The mother then came back in and offered a cup of tea that George happily accepted. She paid him for his services and out he went.
That was how it worked, he would go from place to place teaching and working. He left his violin with the lady so it would be safe while he went to one of his other jobs. A new house was being constructed and here was his chance to make a few more coins this day.
He went up to the foreman.
Would you by any chance need an extra pair of hands sir?
That depends… Kan you work a hammer and lift beams?
I would think so answered George.
Well I will give you a try he said.
George worked all day until the late afternoon.
It was a harsh job and the foreman kept yelling at everyone.
As he was going he saw a worker reading a newspaper and asked: what’s new in the world?
The man replied: Well they soon have a new fire brigade in Dublin apparently, and a new Concert hall is opening in Belfast. Who knows Georgie maybe you’ll get to play there some day.
Sounds good to me said George with a smile.
He walked down the street, packed houses on each side and horse wagons rolling past in each direction leaving smelly piles one needed to be careful not to step in.
He knocked again on the door he had been at earlier, and it was opened by the man.
What can I do for you then?
I left my violin here for safekeeping sir, replied George.
The man looked around himself and spotted the instrument.
Here you go he said as he handed it over.
Thank you said George and did a slight bow as he received it.
Have a lovely evening he continued as he turned.
You too said the man out of courtesy who found George a bit strange.
George heard the sound of the door closing behind him.
He walked caught up in his own thoughts. Thoughts about Performing in the concert hall. Thoughts of the future.
He almost got runover and apologized as the man with the wagon yelled something after him. George reached his horse after purchasing a few food items and started the ride home.
He was in deep thought the whole way home. As he arrived he led the horse back to its place. Then removed the saddle and went indoors. He prepared some dinner, after a long day he was absolutely starving. A northerner had told him how much the people in his country liked to use dill and it had become a habit of his own as well. The smell of dill and boiling potatoes and of meat and vegetables seemed heavenly to him in that moment and he enjoyed his meal thoroughly.
He then practiced his violin a bit, read a book that he had almost finished and started getting ready for bed. his other suit, for he had but two was almost dry.
he would wear one while washing the other. He prepared his clothes and finished the day by relieving himself and going to bed.
He thought the air was a bit poor so he left the window open, with every intension of closing it again before sleeping.
However, he soon found that it would not be so for he was already asleep. Fortunately, the night was warmer than before as the summer heat had just started arriving that very day. The sun went down and all was dark. In the little hours there seemed to be a flickering light.
George woke up and saw something he did not believe existed.
I must still be sleeping he thought, but he wasn’t.
A Fairy. In through the open window had come a small glowing fairy. She was not what he had expected. Upon her head was a helmet with a nose guard connected to eye protection and the helmet was swooping down on the sides of the face making it remind him of a Corinthian helmet. Instead of horsehair on top there was something like a butterfly wing of metal. The metal of the helmet was green and glossy. The wing on top outlined and detailed in black. From underneath her helmet her long hair came out. On her back a pair of butterfly like wings almost as tall as herself. Their edges were black and their centre the mysterious green of a peacock feather. The black edges were wavy and swooped out to little curls at the bottom and ever so slightly at the top as well. On her chest was a corset shaped breastplate of intricate design protecting her stomach. Beneath a vertically striped black and green skirt reached her knees and were met by black boots cut diagonally at the top and featuring a short stocky heel and long pointy toe. In colours matching the other clothes. On her hands were delicate gloves reaching the elbows. They where also cut diagonally and featured a dark green stripe along the upper edge of the otherwise black gloves.
In other features she looked as you might imagine an Irish girl to do.
She was athletic as she was clearly a warrior.
In her hand rested a glave,
its handle was striped like a candy cane in black and green.
The blade upon it like polished steel but shimmering in green,
almost like when oil lands on the wet ground.
Her wings fluttered as she hovered in front of him.
She was but the height of a pen he thought, perhaps 15 or 16 cm.
Then after a moment she landed on the table and just stood there and looked at him for a moment.
George gathered his courage and asked: Who and what are you?
She smiled and said:
I am Saffira, Aero champion…That means member of the queen’s guard… Of the fairy kingdom of the great tree.
I have come here because I’m curious about your world.
It has taken me some time of studying your people to learn your language, however now I’m confident I can speak fluently enough and wish to have a conversation.
George sat up and rubbed his eyes, He didn’t know what to think or say.
What do you do? asked the fairy.
I, eh, I play music and teach it and various other little jobs that comes my way. Answered the still somewhat shocked George.
What about you?
I’m among those who protect the queen and our fair city.
However every once in a while one of us is sent out to explore the world outside.
We don’t usually talk with humans but… I decided to make an exception.
That’s all I will tell you for now.
Tell me what is it like in the city of humans?
George said: well, it’s quite harsh, there has recently been a lack of food and difficult to get by, but it seems to be looking better and people are mildly optimistic about the future.
So… you exchange lessons for currency and food?
Indeed
Hm, I have to go now but we will continue our conversation tomorrow. Don’t tell anyone about me ok?
ok.
The fairy quickly flew out the window.
He laid down and closed his eyes and drifted back to sleep in thoughts of her.
The next day he walked as in a daze, all he could think about was the fairy, and he couldn’t concentrate on what he was doing for his thoughts were far away. away with the fairy on his table and their encounter. George! yelled a voice.
Oh sorry, I guess I was lost in thought said George.
It was the mother of his current student who had spoken to him.
I’m not paying you to daydream!
Terribly sorry said George.
Right from the top.
The day passed by and he found himself waiting by his window.
Yet again the fairy arrived.
As she did, so did a rat.
He flinched but had no time to take any action before
she had decapitated it.
You seemed distracted today she said.
The fairy wanted to make sure he would not say a word to anyone about her, so she had followed him.
With a surprised expression he asked: how could you possibly know?
She smiled and said: I know lots of things and winked at him.
He wasn’t particularly amused as he understood she had been keeping an eye on him.
But he was too curious to let it get in the way. He kept asking her questions, she kept not replying but instead asking more questions about him. As he wanted the conversation to continue, he went along with it but finally said. I think it’s only fair you tell me something more about yourself now. we have spoken for at least an hour, and you have said nothing.
Tomorrow, she answered.
See me here and I shall show you more than you thought possible.
He spent the next day working with a new enthusiasm. As he got home, he practically ran in the door and waited eagerly. The sun went down, and darkness fell.
The hours passed.
Where was she?
Midnight came and went. He fell asleep leaning over the table and awoke a few hours later. It was still dark, but morning was approaching.
He thought to himself, I guess she is not coming after all. He was now saddened and decided to close the window and grab another hour or two of sleep before he had to get up again. But just as he stood up the fairy entered.
Hi.
He smiled and said hi back.
It’s time, let’s go, this way.
He climbed out the window after her and followed her deep into the woods and into the forest, where although he at first didn’t notice it, he now saw a giant tree.
This place is hidden and protected by both warriors and an invisibility spell. I now allow you to see.
Suddenly he saw a large opening in the giant tree full of light.
There it was.
The fairy city.
