Six Interesting facts About Fish and Fishing
1. Fish Can Recognise Faces: Some species of fish, like the archerfish, have remarkable facial recognition abilities. They can distinguish between different human faces, even if they wear disguises like glasses or hats. This suggests that fish have more cognitive abilities than we might think.
2. Biggest Fish: The Whale Shark: The largest fish in the world is not a predator but a filter feeder. The whale shark can grow up to 40 feet long and feeds mainly on plankton. Despite its massive size, it is gentle and harmless to humans, making it a favourite among divers.
3. Electric Eels Use Shocking Tactics: Electric eels, found in South America, can generate electric shocks of up to 600 volts! They use these shocks for hunting prey, defending themselves, and communicating with other eels. Anglers need not worry, though; these eels are not typically caught by fishing lines.
4. Fishing as Therapy: Fishing has been shown to have therapeutic benefits. It can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and improve overall mental well-being. Many anglers find solace in the peacefulness of nature and the focus required for the task.
5. The Goliath Tigerfish’s Legendary Bite: The Goliath Tigerfish, found in African rivers, is one of the most fearsome freshwater fish. With its razor-sharp teeth and aggressive nature, it’s been known to attack other fish, birds, and even small mammals Anglers who dare to catch one need to be prepared for a wild fight.
6. Fish Can Make Sounds: While we often associate sounds with animals like birds or mammals, fish can also be noisy. Some fish species, like the Oyster Toadfish, produce grunting or humming sounds to communicate with each other. These sounds are often used during courtship rituals or territorial displays.

––
Great Spirit, whose voice is on the wind, hear me.
Let me grow in strength and knowledge.
Make me ever behold the red and purple sunset.
May my hands respect the things you have given me.
Teach me the secrets hidden under every leaf and stone, as you have taught people for ages past.
Let me use my strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy – myself.
Let me always come before you with clean hands and an open heart, that as my Earthly span fades like the sunset, my Spirit shall return to you without shame.
(Based on a traditional Sioux prayer)

1. Advice On Lake Fishing.
Lake fishing is fairly akin to river fishing, or slow-flowing river fishing anyway. The types of fish in rivers and lakes tend to be identical, which means that the equipment, bait and lures will be identical as well.
However you may require a longer rod, say, a beach-casting rod to cast your bait farther out into the lake. Lake fish will often grow to a larger size than river fish, so your line should be stronger as well.
Lake fish have conventionally been classed under three general categories. Namely, game fish, food fish, and bait fish. Bass, trout, pike, pickerel, muskellunge, perch, etc., are recognised as game fish because of their sporting importance. Carp, suckers, some of the catfish, yellow perch, etc., are considered food fish.
This latter group is not considered to provide the sport that the so-called game fish do, but they do have a real monetary and sporting value. The third class are the minnows and tiddlers that can be used as bait for the first two categories.
