It was a dark, stormy night. The kind of night you just curl up by the fire with a big book and let the worlds above you collide.

In fact, I was doing just that when I heard a loud crash, then a few moments later, an insistent banging on my door.

I set down my drink and stood, my heart thundering louder than the storm outside.

In fact, I was doing just that when I heard a loud crash, then a few moments later, an insistent banging on my door.

I set down my drink and stood, my heart thundering louder than the storm outside.

Racing to the door, I whisked it open, only to reveal a very distraught woman who begged me to let her in.

Seeing as it was pouring outside and she certainly wasn't dressed for it, I was inclined to let her. My mind was abuzz with all that was going on.

"What --?" I started to ask, but she pleaded with me with her big, blue eyes to let me in.

"I'm not safe!" She whispered, her voice barely a whisper.

The woman whom I later learned was Susanna, looked at me imploringly. The little clothes she had on were soaking wet and even though every instinct in my body told me this was a bad idea, how could I turn her down?

"Oh thank you --"

"Jack."

"Thank you, Jack! You've just saved my life!" She kissed me on the cheek as she quickly slipped inside, shutting the door behind her.

I eyed the beauty standing before me, taking note of the ring she was wearing.

"So, what the hell is going on?"

"Shh!" She motioned with her arms. "You see...it's..." She blushed furiously and looked all around the room.

"Yeah? Spit it out." I was starting to get tired of the act.

"As you might have guessed, I'm...Amish. And I..." She lowered her voice to the barest of a whisper and glanced out the window. "I'm running away."
