It was a scary training indeed for Merylyn at Arizona. She became weaker and weaker as the training progressed! Was it the right time for her to quit? She wouldn't want to; owing to the fact that to make a retreat meant a death penalty, and she wouldn't want to die cheaply. Thus the slogan "No Retreat, No Surrender" was the order she had to follow.

When her master left, it was a moment of relief, and she had to take a deep rest which she had thirsted long ago. Waking up and seeing a stranger driving was another daydreaming event, and having instructed Mr. Adams to take her to Berkely College all the way from Arizona, she kept having deeper thoughts, "How on earth can I stick to all the rules, How is it going to be possible to keep my identity?"

Finally, at Berkely college, which happened to be a very big school, Mr. Adams was not disposed to helping out on getting her room, and while searching all alone, it was a strange girl called Nancy that beckoned. "Hey!" She kept whispering but Merylyn never wanted to be close to anyone...Nancy persisted and asked for help to break into her room door, and unknown
to Merylyn, the door the claimed was hers belonged to someone else. They were caught, and Nancy escaped, while Merylyn got nabbed by Scoffield. "Is this how I want to land into trouble on my first day at Berkely college?" she thought within.

Chapter 1

The Hard Training

She cried while struggling fruitlessly with the pains on her legs as she made an attempt to get up. The only solution was to get up, otherwise it wouldn’t go well with her. Right there was her master of all, and having stared up at him with a weird face, she could not just hate him because her training never went in that direction. All her entire life, she was trained to worship him, to act as she’s instructed, and to strictly comply with all the rules, being her master of all.

“Get up now!” he ordered in a harsh whisper. By this time, he looked down on her with disdain on his face. He was prepared to end her there and Merylyn knew he had the power to do so. He is unquestionable and at the same time, there was no one to get her saved.

Merylyn exhaled deeply as she battled to get up. She eventually got up on her feet again with her fist tightly closed as she stood prepared to fight. Though feeling worsening conditions of pains on her ribs as a result of the constant assaults on them, but she never showed that on her face. She had no option other than to complete her training before giving attention to her injuries. That was just the rule, and the moment the rule gets broken, it’s a death sentence.

She limped over to her master’s direction and spread her legs, prepared for a fight. She looked at him for a while in fear. She knew he would hit her again because he was very good at it, and she was just a novice. Merylyn was quick to give the first attack charging towards him. She flung her legs and chose to go for a kick, but as she expected, he was so fast. He held her leg, flipped her around, exerting a great force on the leg. She wailed for help as the pain was becoming insufferable. He finally let go of her, and she fell to the ground, by this time, her leg was already unsteady, as she crawled away from him. She was not prepared to go through another round of pain, knowing fully well that no matter how hard she tried, there was no guarantee of her fighting him. He was just exceptionally fast and calculative for her to get.

“Too Slow!” He noted as he beckoned on Merylyn to get up. She slugged, staring at him with fear. She could not do it again. The pain she encountered was already okay, and she knew that her master was not going to stop until he broke her finally. He walked across to her and having found out she was still finding it difficult to get up, he bent down, roughly grabbed her hair, making her cry the more. She looked at him with a deep breath, and notice he had a smirk on his face.

“It’s like you have forgotten rule number one, Merylyn!” He whispered into her ear, causing a shivering down her spine. “Never show weakness!” He left her ear and walked away slowly from her. In just a few meters, he stopped and turned back to her. “You’re going to the outside world, and you’ve already forgotten your basics. Pathetic!”

“No Master, I did not!” She moaned. She knew the repercussion of disobedience, and thus not prepared to face that.

“Really?”. He said with a look of weirdness on his face. “Why can’t we do a recap? I would not permit you to be lagging in the outside world because if you do, I’m very certain you know the consequences.

“Yes of course master,” she replied while nodding her head. He moved a bit closer towards her, bent down to her level once again. He slowly caressed her chin with his hands.

The 2nd rule, “never allow anyone discover your identity,” he said just exactly the way Merylyn had suspected, she received a slap on her right cheek, as a punishment for being reminded of the rules. She felt a taste of a metallic liquid in her tongue. Blood, she gasped.

The 3rd rule, “kill anyone that discovers your identity before your master discovers,” he said, following with another slap.

The 4th rule, “never look down on your prey, they could strike when you least expect.” Now, Merylyn’s face had already been bruised, while getting set for another supposed strike. The ring on her master’s finger kept things worse for her as it continued forming injuries on her skin. As expected, he hit her again across the face, which later got accompanied with tears in her eyes. Her blinking was very fast without showing her weakness. That would worsen the situation for her. She ignored the pains she felt focused more at him, emotionless.

The 5th rule, “No friend permitted.” He placed his finger under her chin, lifting her face, swaying it across as though trying to access her. She did not fail to observe the satisfactory look on his face as he viewed his inflicted injury on her face, yet smacking her once again, which made her fall to the ground, groaning in further pains. She coughed repeatedly with blood coming out of her mouth.

He smiled, got up, and walked away from her. She could breathe at last. She got her hair adjusted, and tucked it behind her ears. Her clothes were messed up with blood, dust, and sweat. She looked at him as he walked away, and suddenly stopped, turned to look at her.

“The most important rule is the 6th rule, NEVER FALL IN LOVE”

Chapter 2

Naomi’s Experience and Advice

Merylyn leapt away from the training arena with her bruised looks. The agonizing aches she felt on her head couldn’t make her neglect it, no matter how hard she tried. She went to her room, whilst the thoughts of all she had gone through during the course of the training made her stomach churn. Of course, she knew she would have to face Florence’s constant troubles, and it’s exactly rest she needed but she knew she wasn’t going to get just that.

Merylyn exhaled very fast, pushed the room door open. By this time it was dark, and that automatically denoted that Florence (her sister) wasn’t there. Nice one! Now she could have some time to rest. She switched on the light, and she almost felt lifeless when she saw a figure on her bed. Her soul got relieved a bit when she realized that it was Florence. She was not expecting her and what the hell was she doing alone in the room in the dark? The last time she checked, Florence detested dark places.

“Why were you comfortable staying alone in the dark? You are not even sleeping or did you just decide to make me afraid? ” She said with a frowned face while she dropped her training bag beside her on the bed.

“Wait! What’s all these in your face?” Florence enquired, completely ignoring Merylyn’s statement. Merylyn knew she was not asking because she was concerned, instead, she was just inquisitive as to knowing what happened in the training room.

“I wouldn’t love to talk about it please. Don’t act like though you care whatsoever”. Merylyn replied exhaustively while she sat on her bed, and then rested her head across the sheets.

“You’re right anyway, I don’t. You know I have always remained inquisitive to know why master chose you. You’re very weak, and far from qualified for the outside world.” She said.

“Who’re you to conclude that way? She could not permit the words get to her knowing fully well how Florence could be when kicked in jealously. In essence, she was not ready to think over anything.” All she needed was rest to put a stop to her pounding head, which was already having an adverse impact on her reasoning at that moment.

“Almost everyone know that you’re the weakest and I know that as well. ”

“You think you would have been a better alternative?”

“Even Nancy is better than you. The outside word is hard and no match for you anyway. ”

“Nobody has been there, so you are clueless about something you have no knowledge about.”

“Why do you think we learn to do all this? Train, learn some new rules daily, and get penalized whenever one is forgotten? The answer is very simple. It’s because we are being prepared for the outside world.”

“I don’t think the outside world is as bad as it sounds”

“You know nothing”

“The master makes it there and returns with no single scar on his body.”

“Because he’s tough and you’re weakening.” The weird look in her eyes held disdain and it was making Florence wonder she had done to her. Neglecting was the perfect option for her when it came to Florence. She did not want to get into trouble for exchanging conflicts with a sister. The punishment was too severe. They took Roselyn for punishment the moment she fought with Florence. Though Florence lied that she was attacked first, while Roselyn was not the type that was good at self defense. She was taken to the dark room, and she wasn’t heard of since then. It was exactly three months, yet not back. Everyone wondered what could have happened to her, except for Naomi who demonstrated complete nonchalance, which wasn’t pleasant to the other girls, especially Merylyn.

Merylyn lay on her bed, with her heart on her throat. For the very first time, she was going to the outside world, yet did not know how to feel. In all, she felt numb. Registering her in college all felt crazy to her. All the girls schooled in Arizona, thus she was bewildered why she needed to further in a strange land she had not even the least clue about. The question she continued asking was why she was chosen when there were many girls completely strong and fit for the outside world.

Florence was right, she was indeed a weakening. The master knew quite well that she could not be classified as strong, and neither was she considered calculative as some of the other girls, yet she was till chosen.

She slowly turned to the other bed side, with her head still aching seriously, while ignoring the pains in her ribs because she felt paying attention to them would only get her suffering compounded. The hospital in Arizona was like a torture zone, a place where all the girls were approximately handled, causing further pains to what they had already encountered. Merylyn knew far better and would rather prefer a saner option to visiting the hospital.

The door was opened, a little light shone across the dark room. Merylyn knew it was Naomi. It just had to be Naomi because no girl is permitted to visit another room that wasn’t assigned to her. That rule dare not be defied by anyone as a result of its accompanying consequences.

Naomi walked over to her bed side, hopped on it. The first thing that Merylyn heard was a whimper. Of course it was sure coming from Naomi’s bedside. Merylyn pretended as though she didn’t hear at first. It was not her business anyway, she had a big day the next day. She thought to herself.

It continued and Merylyn knew she just could not neglect Naomi’s cry any longer. She rested her feet on the ground right from her bed, and when she stood up, the ache in her head hit her hard, almost falling back to the bed, being extremely weak at this very time. She made her way to Naomi’s bedside, sat beside her while silently sobbing.
