Is there Life in Outer Space?

Is there life in “Outer Space”?

By Daniel M. Bryant

“Is there life in Outer Space? That is a question that men have wondered for a long time, maybe as far back as mankind has existed. It is hard not to wonder, when we look out into the night sky on a crisp, clear night, and gaze at the vast array of constellations and wonders that the night sky holds. I remember a trip I went on to Western Saharah in 2004. I went with a group to visit the Sahrawi refugee camps in the Tindouf Providence of Algeria. This is pure desert like I had never experienced before. There is no electricity, other than some florescent lights people have rigged up to discarded car batteries. One night when we were there, we hiked out away from the camp and laid down on the desert floor, stargazing for a long time. It was wonderful. With no artificial light interference, the night sky opens up in ways that stagger the mind and eyes. It was breathtaking. It is hard not to wonder what is really out there, when you behold all the beauty of the Milky Way, and our great Galaxy. The images coming back from the Hubble spacecraft are astounding and wonderful. We can't help but think that, given the vastness of the known universe that there must be other inhabited planets. It is an easy conclusion to come to.

“Is there life in Outer Space?' is one of those questions that, at this point in our existence, any answer that a person would give to that question is speculation. We can't prove that there isn't, but so far, no one has proven that there is. SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is an exploratory science that seeks evidence of life in the universe by looking for some signature of its technology. Their website states the following: “Our current understanding of life’s origin on Earth suggests that given a suitable environment and sufficient time, life will develop on other planets. Whether evolution will give rise to intelligent, technological civilizations is open to speculation. However, such a civilization could be detected across interstellar distances, and may actually offer our best opportunity for discovering extraterrestrial life in the near future.”

I am not going to try to prove whether there is, or whether there isn't, but I would like to propose a perspective that, to my knowledge, has not been examined thoroughly and explained. I will unfold this as we move forward. I am not saying that no one else has considered or written an explanation as the one I am going to present. I am just saying that I am not aware of it, if there has been.

The concept of life in outer space makes for great Science Fiction. It is an interesting and entertaining concept, and like the incorporation of the element of magic in stories, it can be used to make anything happen. If a storyteller wants something weird and unexplainable to occur in a story, all he has to do is introduce the element of magic, without explaining what magic is, or where it comes from. Suddenly, anything is possible. To be honest, I personally think the use of magic in storytelling is lazy. It doesn't require a lot of logical thinking. Fairy Godmothers, can make anything happen. End of Story, don't ask questions. We can make up anything we want to about extra-terrestrials, and invent fun stories. But I don't need to get off on a tangent.

If there are extra-terrestrial beings, and so far we have not encountered any, in a story, we can just make them up to be whatever we want them to be. I am not really much of a Star Wars fan, and other space movies of like genre. I find them to be terribly predictable, and to be honest, with the Lord of the Rings movies, I get tired of watching all of the fighting. However, I am a big fan of Dr. Who. Now, I admit the story lines in Dr. Who are pretty ridiculous for the most part, but the story lines often present things with a new and weird twist to our perceptions of reality that I find entertaining and thought provoking. The thing I find amusing about all movies and TV series about outer space, even going back to the original Star Trek series, is that in all of these movies and TV series, the extra-terrestrials are just modified versions of humans, for the most part, they all speak English, and all of the planets have atmosphere's that are perfectly suited to visits from human beings not wearing any kind of space suit. I guess the telling of the stories would get way to complicated if we worked too hard at making it more real. Too much work!

None of this has anything to do with whether there is really life in outer space. It is just fantasy, made for entertainment.

People in times past may not have had the fascination with outer space that we have. One of the reasons may be that they just did not know that much about it. They may not have had the technology that we have to penetrate deeply into space. However, this is speculation on my part. I was not there, so I do not really know.

Notice that I say, “may not have” and not “did not”. Let me explain. I personally think it is possible that there have existed civilizations in the world that have been much more highly advanced than we realize. These civilizations are now gone, and all we can know about them is from artifacts and remains discovered by archeologists, and the theories about those remains postulated by anthropologists. The interpretations are all speculative.
