ChapterOne

THE YOUNG MENTOR ANTON

Anton didn’t know all the details, but he did know that his mother was in jail with a life sentence. She loved his dad too hard and shot him because she wasn’t going to share him with other women. She was a beautiful Hispanic woman who went off the rails.

Anton’s father Kam learned some key Spanish phrases; he learned enough to greet her and to ask her to teach him more. That’s how he made his breakthrough with her. Her English was choppy, and her family was one of the very few Hispanic families in Waycross at the time.

Anton was raised bilingual as a result during his early childhood before the tragedy of his father. After the devastating scenario, his mother’s family moved back to Brazil, and his grandparents lovingly took him in. His deceased father’s parents. They adored their only grandchild. Anton loved his mom dearly, but it was hard to like her because she killed his hero.

For the next few years, Anton absorbed information like a computer, always around the grand folks watching, listening, and learning. Otherwise, he was basically an introvert. The only kid he was consistent with was Khalil. For some reason, he naturally took on a big brother role with his young next-door neighbor.

It was Saturday at about 11 am. Anton just finished having tea with his grandfather Quinn. Quinn was telling him that he’d be grown before he knew it, so don’t rush it; enjoy your childhood; it’s too short not to. Then he’d replay these ‘basics’ for Anton, “The only thing Sadie and I need from you is respect, clean up behind yourself, and handle your chores…for the sake of karma and goodwill, you should want to be a positive person so I don’t demand that as much as you should demand it from yourself.”

Anton heard this message from his grandfather (Quinn) and could deliver the words verbatim. Anton could only take the well-intended advice with a grain of salt. His own dad proved to him that life was short. His dad didn’t even reach 30 before his untimely demise.

Anton’s drive was actually stimulated by the advice his father offered early on. His dad told him at eight that life would only give you lemons, and you have to make the lemonade. Anton saw enough folks struggling to realize what he didn’t want for himself.
